Personally I like Cossacks, eh is a cool guy, kills Tsarists and doesn't afraid of anything.
Cossacks are something I've read a bit about back in the day. Basically, the situation is this. Russia starts out kind of in the center and north of what it is now, originally had the more northerly parts of Ukraine too. There's the vast Eurasian steppe stretching from, like, Hungary to Manchuria, and in that chaotic environment lots of frontiersman wind up mingling out there. Add in a bunch of runaway serfs (serfdom being something that in Russia gets WORSE over time until becoming de facto slavery by the 1800s) and there's the beginnings of a unique ethnic groups of White Christian horse nomads, the Cossacks. And White horse nomads are obviously pretty based.
These horse people for a long time rampage around southern Ukraine, terrorizing Russians, Poles, and Persians. At one point the Polish king fucks with a loyal Cossack noble and forces him to rebel, during which his band shoahs 50 million Polish Jews but also cripples the Polish-Lithuanian state (very not based) which was the best thing in Europe besides the Netherlands at the time. Later on, Cossacks launch a massive uprising, same time as the American Revolution, by a nutter claiming to secretly be the dead tsar in disguise and try to undo serfdom (based).
Later on, the Cossacks are buck broken by the Tsars and turned into like a frontier gendarmerie, pushing the settlement of Siberia (based). Then during WW1 they side with the Whites (based) and then get basically culturally-genocided in a similar manner to what Americans did to Indians.
Now Cossacks are both an important feature of Ukrainian identity (gay) but most of the Cossack LARPers (the direct Russian equivalent to being a 1% Cherokee princess) are Putinist thugs (based?).
