lol some poor saps still have to deal with fucking Fortran
Good money in the private sector if you know Fortran or COBOL though. Lots of aerospace shit still uses Fortran and lots of banks use COBOL. Saw a nuclear plant using Fortran, that was some scary shit.
This is literally the case. Fortran was the first language I learned in college and there is software my company works with that's literally written in Ada. I think there's even one or two things that still need to be programmed with punch cards.

That being said, most of my work post-college has been with Matlab - all this talk about Java and C++ is beyond me. I'm just a pure mathnigger when it comes to programming.

Ah, so you did google it after realizing you don't remember shit from your special ed courses. Either way, you would've failed an interview with me. At least now I know what you do for a living, given your level of education. Any regrets about being a parasite on society?

For reference, no one uses C++ in academia anymore, all that shit is done almost entirely in Python. That tells me you're administrative staff, a useless parasite.
>C++ is the admin language
????

The guy who told us all he lives off SSI and gets grifted by con artists monthly is calling someone who pays for his SSI a worthless parasite? That's cute.

I don't work in academia, lol. I never said I did. I did grad school a while ago.

Yep. COBOL developers make bank. Financial sector uses a lot of COBOL, and one job I had we had an old dude who made like $150 an hour maintaining the mainframe. I had to work on it once and hated every minute of it

C++ was used in academia last when there was a Bush in the White House, meaning he hasn't been coding since then. That's confirmed by the half-assed answer he gave to my rather simple question. Yet he still spends all day on the computer doing nothing, meaning he's admin staff. Also lol @ Java being too hard for @Hollywood Hulk Hogan.

I find it hilarious that Fortran and COBOL jobs still pay so much compared to hipster shit like Rust. Also kind of terrifying knowing how much infrastructure shit runs on ancient legacy software on a decrepit old mainframe somewhere.

And don't get me started on SCADA, oh boy... really disappointed that Stuxnet wasn't as much of an eye-opener for people as it should've been. Oh well, not my fight.

Lol I answered your question, son.

Java is easy as fuck. C++ is miles harder. The fact you can't handle C++ shows you're a simpleton

Honestly, older doesn't necessarily mean inferior. A Nuclear Powerplant that runs on Fortran on an old computer is less suspectable to Single Event Upstarts. All our satellites also need to run basic code and have "old" computers with loosely spaced transistors because of all the solar radiation.

I have an elderly programmer friend who did that shit and then they suddenly fired him.

Then when everything fell apart and nobody understood the code they had to hire him back at triple the price.

Oh yeah, those things are robust as shit. The terrifying part is that people who can maintain those systems can be counted on one hand in most companies, and that schools produce idiot graduates who can't fucking code a for loop without spending two hours googling for a tutorial.

You just said you couldn't figure out how to optimize your Java code for performance and couldn't figure out how to deal with a memory leak, so you gave up.

We should just rename this thread for Chungus Scrungus or whatever because it's basically just watching this circus geek fuck chickens at this point.

Yep, I wanted to learn it at one point but then realized how awful COBOL is and not going insane is more valuable than money

Java is supposed to be optimized and do its own garbage collection. It fails at that, so why use it? Just because you're a shitty programmer that can't handle memory allocation and deallocation doesn't mean I am

Also there is nothing wrong with Java unless you're a braindead pajeet that can't use standard patterns and just copy-pastes shit from Stack Overflow until the compiler no longer produces errors. I could train a monkey to do a better job.
Doesn't sound like an efficient way to code. :smug:

Imagine programming in Java.jpg

>Java
>Performance
Why even bother
Beats me, I don't know why he chose Java for that in the first place. Sounds like some dumb data processing thing, I would've just used a bash script.

Most efficient way to code is to get an Indian team to do it for $4/hour, then have a Romanian team fix the Indian code for $8 an hour, then deploy.

"hurr durr I couldn't figure out Java so that means it's bad"
Fucking amateurs.

My academic advisor wanted to be able to show the results of it from any o/s, and it was way too complex to use a script for.

Either way, Java is trash

Lol sure ya did. Why the hell would you use Java for a web server?
Because it was for a Java course, duh.

Here's a free tip, learn Solidity in time for the next crypto bull run. You have no idea how much people are willing to pay for dumb shit like a fork of RFI. Maybe you'll finally afford to move out from that rented hovel you live in.

Hopefully you've learned your lesson not to inform HHH what crypto you're putting your chips on when you buy low. He's going to reference $WHACKD until the end of time.
