Right - why cite primary sources from medical journals and available datasets you can run through R/Stata/SPSS/whatever software you use, when you can instead rely on online tabloids or talking heads that have a financial interest in gaining followers proclaiming they know the real absolute truth that "THEY" are covering up.

The meme of "trust the science" is true when it comes to scientific reporting in a ton of ordinary newspapers, which is usually absolute shite - largely because journalists nowadays can't even read the conclusions of scientific papers, much less interpret data. There's also plenty of dumbfuckery going on in the scientific community. However: When the Lancet publishes a dataset and they find out 3 weeks later that it's faulty, they publish a note of that and retract the study. That's what I want to see. I don't know what is "right" - I just have a decently informed perception of the most logical course of action based on the available data at a particular point in time. This might change if new data becomes available.

On the flipside, what is really fucking weird is that some people in this thread will both complain when scientific views on a matter are too rigid in the face of new evidence - "they are covering it up" - and when scientific views on a matter change or when an error is made public - "they had no idea what they were doing". Either way is the wrong way I guess?
