To answer the slightly misandrist question in the OP, it's pretty simple: Men infer from a young age that they haven't successfully integrated into society if they can't show that someone apart from their immediate family loves them. It marks you as a pariah, someone who Doesn't Fit In. The reason some guys just get into hobbies exclusively to get laid is because A) they think they're attractive enough to collect panties or B) they're antisocial people who have been convinced that they need a GF and the rest will come afterwards. It's putting the cart before the horse, obviously, but it just comes from the societal and social pressure to fit in, and to prove that you're fitting in.
That, and if you're a dude and you're still a virgin into your 20s, it's seen as a death curse - You're not just bad at dating women(And to a larger extent, social interaction), you're abysmal. It's seen as a brand of shame.

mostly sex, and companionship, but its the 4-5 general needs of a man: food, drink, sleep, touch of a woman (or whatever the fuck you're into), and a purpose/meaning in life.
