Are you ready for when society collapses?

Think of a societal breakdown as a manmade disaster and plan for it just as you would a natural disaster. Make friends. Know your neighbors. Stay or get in shape. Buy good shoes. Take up hiking. Have a few days' supply of food and water on hand. Buy a knapsack or backpack or an army surplus rucksack, fill it with provisions, some 550-cord, and a poncho. Finally, procure a weapon if you don't have one--if you can't own a gun or a knife, then find a common tool, such as a ball peen hammer, screwdriver, or crowbar that can be used as a weapon because you will need a means to defend yourself. Once things get sporty, determine whether to stay or go from your present position. Be ready to move in any case.

It all comes down to mindset. Making these bare-bones preparations beforehand costs very little and will do wonders for your psychological well-being if you suddenly find yourself in the shit. You can't possibly plan for every contingency but even those few things you've done right give you an enormous edge over those completely unprepared and hopelessly demoralized from the start.

Stay in the day. Deal with the problem in front of you. Try not to go it alone. Someone you can rely on is worth their weight in gold.

No

But at the same time, your odds of surviving a societal collapse are awful whether you prep or not. If it's from a disaster or a disease, odds are, you'll be a statistic. If it's a general collapse of order, you have to hope you're in an area or can get to an area where food is available, and I mean long term, not just raidable grocery stores. And god help you if you're far from freshwater, or worse, live in a desert or a swamp.

I think it's reasonable to be prepared for a short term crisis (like the power going out for several days or a local natural disaster), but if it's really the end of all things, that prep is nice, but the odds are insanely stacked against you.

The army/police won't save you
They already don't, cops have even go out of their way to say they are not obligated to protect you. Which brings me to this:
Think 2020's Summer of Love, but nationwide.
Buddy that happened because the guys upstairs refused to send the cops and literally blocked the national guard. In some cases the cops where there to protect the looters and commies from getting what they had coming. Without cops who is stopping me from going ape and mowing down a bunch of looters? what are they gonna do shot me while aiming sideways? use those gay .22 rifles they like to pose with?

If anything I would be far more worried about ex-military types becoming warlords, those guys will be packing real gear not a hipoint, and they are way more trained than I or the average gun owner is. They are way more organized than any gang or commie group, and once they get in charge of an area they wont leave, why would they? even the lowest army grunt would be living large in this situation.
I’m all ears if anyone has solved the water issue!
If you got a water source nearby you could use a reverse osmosis filter with a manual pump.

The danger is almost always other people. Have a strong circle of family/friends, and don't live near shitskins.
There you go, the odds are now in your favor.

I live in a high trust society with very frequent natural disasters, most people are trained and experienced in having to react to mass failure and emergencies, my family and I will be just fine.

Water is not often an issue because getting water isn't hard to find except if you're a citycel or live very far from a river.
The issue is clean water.

Until mass water sanitation comes back, I recommend using a lifestraw or any other cheap and simple way to drink any water (that hasn't been chemically contaminated or is sea water). I bought a few for my family when Covid started and we still had no idea of what it was, just videos of chinks dropping in the street.
It's cheap and allow for thousands of liters to be drinkable per pen.

Probably.
I'm mainly betting on everybody else fleeing to big cities and military bases for safety so I can capitalize on all the empty land and water sources.
Problem is that there's a hydro-electric dam nearby. It won't be a place people will flee to immediately but someone out there knows it's important and will set up camp and I hope it's just random engineers staying to keep it alive and not the military because if it's the military then all the niggers are going to come and start doing crime.

Nope, no amount of preparation is going to save me when I live on a small overpopulated island in the middle of the Pacific. Shit hits the fan, it's going to be a Cormac McCarthy novel in two weeks. Even the military here is going to have to figure out how to get food and power once the boats stop coming. My best hope is to become irradiated dust at the start of things.

If shit collapses, I am fucked. I do have one thing going for me: I live within walking distance to a natural source of fresh water but it's probably polluted to hell and back (not Ganges river levels of pollution) so my main problem would be figuring out to clean the water without easy filtration methods.

To start, I'd suggest that society's "collapse" will not come from or lead to catastrophe. Humanity is correcting course quite quickly of late, and I see a pretty smooth landing ahead of us. I say "smooth landing", as we are most definitely going through a transition into a completely new way of being - it's just that it need not involve fear, boomsticks, and sharp objects.

However, just for fun:
how they'll be the wasteland warlord or how their ideology will succeed.
I would suggest that the assumption implied regarding the manner of collapse may only be true in select spaces. In fact, local to where I live? I suspect that people would be far more apt to immediately band together and make things work cooperatively. They already do in many ways. Without getting too personal - the plentiful local natural resources available would be of great benefit to that cause, as well.

One's mileage may vary.

I suppose it comes down to having a finger on the pulse of one's community/region, doesn't it? Sure, some aggressor may appear from outside of that space. Violence may ensue. I have seen a great deal of the..call it "the good in people"..in their actions out here during present times to see that vanish due to infrastructure/logistics collapse.

Agreed. Having one's self sorted out prior to great trials of life will make far more difference than any amount of resource hoarding, etc.

In fact, I would stress this regardless of what may or may not come to pass in our lives, frens. Figure yourself out. Don't let the myriad of daily distractions keep you from finding quiet time to clean out your mental closet. Know thyself.

Frankly, your post is actually good life advice in general. A+ Yes/10 would read again.
