Arena FPS - Before multiplayer FPS games became slower than molasses.

Which was/is better?

UT had some great weapons, the flak cannon is just so good,
UT edges out Quake for me solely because of the fun weapon variety.
Quake's weapons are well rounded tools with specific uses, but UT's are strange multitools sometimes.

I love using the Flak Cannon's alt-fire to hit someone with a giant bomb, or doing a shock combo with the Shock Rifle.

I think it is safe to say that both are pretty great, it comes to subjective opinion of what aspect of a game you enjoy more.
It is sad that he genre is pretty much dead, and that championship was the way it is, as it could have been great was it not for the abilities and the way everything was handled

UT wins out for me over Q3 just because of the better mod support, There were some real gems in there.

Quake 1 multiplayer lasted well into the 3 era for my friends though since it was easy to sneak onto school computers and would run well on shit boxes with no hw accel.

In the current e-sports infested gaming scene, this shouldn't be a problem for a developer that wants to really push it. Like QuakeCon is still a thing, but I guess that's the only MAJOR event I can think of off the top of my head that hosts full on Quake tournaments.
QuakeCon is barely a thing. Bethesda started using it to shill out their games. The amount of tournament LAN play has decreased there (compounded by the fact the last Quake entry doesn’t have LAN support). Quake ProLeague is the only legit tournament now. I hope Microsoft can put it back on track but I’m doubting that.

Slightly related, but not worth making a whole thread for.
The new Quake 1 remaster/port is fantastic, played through the base game co-op with a friend and it was a good time. No issues with connection or anything, it was real smooth. I haven't played any deathmatch in it yet, but I plan on trying it soon before all the hype around the remaster quickly dies.

Bonus points for it being just a free update to anyone who owned Quake on Steam, especially because it gives you the base game, the two expansions, and then two anniversary expansions.

It feels dirty bumping this thread with this content, but here's the first area-shooter trailer I've seen in a while and it's a nightmare: Incolatus

It looks like a nightmare.
It's impossible to see anything, the colors are an absolute mess, particle effects up to wazoo.

Compare that gameplay to Quake III area

Or Unreal Tournament

Or even Quake Champions
