my position is simple: if you think the unborn don't have human rights, then they aren't human. but there's no magical disconnect between your existence outside the womb and inside it. the stork doesn't fly in when no one is looking and replace the being that was inside your mom's womb with you at the instant you slide out the birth canal. i reject the idea that at any point in my existence i didn't have rights, and i reject that anyone didn't have any rights at any time in their existence. unless they give their rights up by like consciously and deliberately murdering a bunch of people or something, which babbies aren't exactly capable of

Premature births happen, and he specified the fetus shouldn't have to be "hooked up to machines" to survive. If we consider this, there is a gray area where a child is "non-viable" by his strict definition, but may have survived if given the chance.

A gestation period is supposed to be around 37+ weeks.
Infants generally have a low chance at survival outside of the womb starting at 19-20 weeks depending on the circumstances.
There is approximately a 50% survival rate at 24 weeks, and the infant requires medical intervention to survive. Is that not a child?

This arbitrary criterion reminds me of some kind of Luddite witchcraft. If an infant can be saved with machines, it's obviously developed enough to be considered a real baby. It can cry and scream and open its eyes.

So no, it's not an infant only when it drops out of the womb, and no need for machine assistance is certainly not the bar for being a child.
