It bears repeating how Oney having a smaller sub-base draws more than the Glumphs.
I admit i only recently started actually watching Chris' content and felt something I barely find on YT anymore: fun. Dumb and silly shit I'd normally just find amusing was gutbustingly funny, even Cory being exceptional and half-assing RE3 was enjoyable.
And my only guess as to why I like them is they're genuinely just sputtering around and having fun. I guess that just filters into the content in a way I hadn't seen in a long ass while. Not one video I have clicked from OneyPlays has been a letdown for me.
Meanwhile... how many parts did GG's Paper Mario: TTYD LP have? I last clocked somewhere way above 50+ (60+? 70+?) and they were still in Glitzville.

Chris has better control since he knows the LP stuff is a side thing. Dude is already doing great with responses to Bowlbo and is still being extremely successful. That and the show from it's origin has been about a bunch of people playing games as the backdrop for the conversations they have. Grumps after about a year of two after Danny took over went more for the gameplay over the conversation so it hurt their videos on the long end of the same jokes repeated. Those two mediums can meet and be great, but right now I think many more people are leaning to having background noise and OP has a better flow since it is talking about stuff more so unrelated to the game.
Chris is def the better content creator bar none, but I do want to state (to be fair and out of love) that Chris also has a bunch of fucking spergs in his fanbase. If you ever want to see some cringe look at the Oneyplays fan facebook group. It's just the exact same jokes over and over and people trying way too hard to channel Chris energy. Like GG lovelies are fucking retards, but the Oneyplays ones that just swarm and flood videos (Seriously just look at the song upload for Liberty by the Pillows) are just as bad.
I'd say as long as you stick with the videos and keep up with them on a basis you won't see any insane sperging, but the more and more you feel like talking with others on reddit or FB you'll wish you stayed in that safe place haha. The people on KF who post about Oneyplays (especially in this thread) are the ones I enjoy talking to since I think the agreement here is that we watch the video for the people and thankfully Chris and crew (DD&J, and Sleepycabin mates) are really what make the videos better.
But in terms of GG (to get back on topic) the Grumps def have pushed for longer style content (I think in two releases per day).
It does make sense since there's less editing to do for Ben but to also fit the algorithm better. The problem is the content is still fucking shit.

It helps that Oney knows a cavalcade of experienced/genuinely good editors who bring their own style and have too much time and not enough money. That and he often swaps out "guests" with whichever friend of his that's available. Love or hate the LP format, Oney brings a variety to his channel most others LP channels couldn't hope to bring.
Even if the grumps bring in GOOD (have to specify because most of their editors are trash) new editors, they often are forced to badly ape Barry or face Arin's autistic wrath for daring to be creative. Creativity which often involves making fun of Dan/Arin because that's all the "good" content you could possibly make with the trash these two chucklefucks shit out onto the editing bay. Not to mention its always just Dan and Arin now, which makes an already stale lunch freeze over into a hunk of shit.
Its hilarious to think that a few years ago GG were very close to doing exactly what Oney does now. But Arin had to be a lazy POS who burned every bridge he could through sheer arrogance.

That's because "Subs" have very little baring of status on YouTube anymore. Sure you get a fancy plaque at 100k subs for your wall, but it's not a big accomplishment in the grand scheme of things.
For example, Matthewmatosis has just over 200k subs. Would you consider his critical input be worth less than say... Girlfriend Reviews? Which at the time of writing has just passed 800k. Not at all.
No matter the size of your channel, YouTube priorities content that has notable engagement per viewer-a-minute, as those statistics present you as viable marketing and advertising space. Additionally as someone who works with YouTube production outlets, it's rather apparent that whoever they've (Grumps) hired to maintain uploads isn't taking advantage/aware of current tagging system or even general word-placement. That said, it should be expected when you hire friends without this type of back-end experience.
For those of you curious: Google has to filter constant phrases, quotes and more to ensure that you are always directed to the most relevant material. It's why when you use Google pictures to search for select content, they've now included the ability to click on related phrases. It's also why the clowns at reddit attempt to mass upvote unflattering pictures of political figures or memes to abuse said algorithms.
YouTube on the otherhand rewrote the ToS and rule set related to tagging material on it's own platform. I wanna say this was back in 2017? Meanwhile, YEARS before that, you used to be able look at what tags a uploaded video used. Clicking the tag would take you to videos using the same key phrases and words, much like the modern day hashtag on Twitter. Problem is people found loop-holes in the system. Tagging your videos with popular channels that are unrelated to the topic, listing pornsites or other lewd aspects etc. It's a system that you have to be highly meticulous with even today. The amount of wannabe e-celebs that tag an upload with JonTron, boobs etc. It's sad but expected.
If you are found to be abusing said tagging system or using no-no words (History, Wrestling and Weaponry focused channels got fucked on this front as they'd often tag terms on a blacklist) you'll either have the video delisted, unable to claim venue or face strikes.
However YouTube in all it's glory are inept at moderating these very guidelines above, just disabled tags from being visible in public and let the bots sweep everything instead. Yay. Alas the only way to find tags now is via third party apps that sell your channel data or right click > inspect and spend ages scrolling for the keywords.
AND WHILE I AM RANTING ABOUT THIS FUCKING PLATFORM
I don't know if it is still the case now, but when you set up a new YouTube account and you state what your main interest is, YouTube would auto-sub you to a bunch of channels they felt would fit. In the case of gaming content, YouTube would auto-sub you to PewDiePie, Game Grumps, KSI, Jacksepticeye, Markiplier, Game Theory and the misc media outlets like IGN and Gametrailers.
It'd legit not be shocked if a hefty percentage of users are completely unaware they are subbed to Game Grumps since your sub inbox is not the default front page anymore

I definitely agree with you there. OneyPlays is GOAT but the fans are unbearable. At least Chris has a good idea of when a joke has run its course and drops it, but the fans definitely don’t. Hell they are still making the Wild Woody rhyming jokes (from this; the original happened in 2016) in fucking 2020. Meme culture ruins everything.

Fuck I thought it was him! I only heard a few of his voice lines so far, but its not terrible. So far he's just the creepy (probably evil) lodge manager. It sounds a little like him, but he does a decent job of delivering the lines. To me it doesn't sound like "Arin trying to do a voice." SEO is smart-speak for clickbait and hedging people on. You see this shit in even the smallest YouTuber's description, as a way to do the huge text box of random word tags of yesteryear while presenting it as proper text. That's why you see "Markiplier plays Amnesia: Dark Descent on PC in this Let's Play to explore a secret scary mansion in this most horrific and thrilling gameplay and funny moments montage". Much like SEO, everyone is in on it. They know it's required. It's why every other news article this day has 4-5 blue links per page. It drives interaction and makes people click on before they even finish the article.
I've been caught up in a lot of these 20-30 min videos recently, and I can totally see why. It's what, 1/48 of my day put on auto-play, and if the content is good enough, I can click on something in the related box and move on. Most LP channels these days survive solely on the creators themselves, where gameplay takes the backseat. But that requires actual personality and usually camera footage as well. But this also doesn't fit in very well with 20-30 min videos as much as something like 12-15 mins of semi-concentration.
GG fits 'well' into the auto-play genre, but that's not an entertaining format. I think people are subbed to GG because they want semi-daily filler in their feed once they're done watching the content they actually enjoy. It's the same with Joe Rogan. People just watch whatever the fuck he puts out, because that's an hour of the morning the don't have to spend finding things to actually watch. But that's ignoring that GG actually makes dogshit content, but also speaks volumes about their drones actually sitting completely focused on their 30 minute videos with no real content.
