I've reached the point where there's a small reaction of shock any time I hear 2006-2012 YT videos saying things like "I wanna kill myself" or "This is retarded". Feels bad man. It was normal, I was there. There's a noticeable feeling of carelessness and levity to videos of that time that's saddening to look back on now. You can tell they had no worries and no super srs strong opinions about current events bubbling underneath. Was it because mainstream media caught up with the Internet and learned how to efficiently make us all scared and angry again?
Eight minutes in to part 22 of Sonic 06, Jon makes a point about changing sensibilities and how strange it was for him to look back at a 90s show and see "traditional gender roles" and nuclear family type settings embraced like that, given where culture was headed in 2013. Its a surreal glimpse at that transitional period where the common opinion was "women don't have to wear skirts and gender roles are kinda dumb", before it all snowballed to shit. They even talked briefly beforehand about why only the pink power ranger wears a skirt (the yellow ranger was a boy in Japan and the action scenes were filmed in Japan). Neither of them sheepishly went quiet, or felt the need to insert a disclaimer about gender bullshit, or pay lip service to the tranny audience that barely existed yet, or call the Nips backwards or some some sort of -phobic. I know it's a small thing but it's just surreal to me.
Jon being the one to express some apprehension toward gender roles and Arin having an "eh whatever" reaction to it is jarring, knowing them now.
