Armored Core

Here's an interesting video on Armored Core I found from a guy called Argonbolt, he seems to be a pretty big fan of mecha!
What I found interesting is the bit where he talks about Vaatividya. (The segment is from 14:45 to 22:09)
That ended up being just as gay and pretentious as Vaatislop in its own way. Youtubers shouldn't be allowed to read philosophy books if this is what they're planning on doing with them.

Fair enough, now looking back at Argonbolt he seems to be a bit of a sperg. And possibly a political one too considering how IIRC he had a weird mini rant about Russia and Ukraine in his Gungriffon retrospective.

I played a little bit with it on a build shortly after its public release. The enemy count is insane even in the early missions and more powerful late-game enemies show up in the early game (most notable was the high mobility LC in the very first mission). Haven't gotten back to it but I really should. It's apparently compatible with the coop mod, which could be fun but it also looks like it might be a mess trying to get both of those working.

Oh yeah, they nerfed some shit a bit after launch because the normies were getting filtered harder than their Souls games. Combat actually requires brain cells which the average DS fan does not have.

I don't know what it was like at launch, but boss fights aren't that bad because you can restart from checkpoints and completely change your setup without having to redo the rest of the mission. That and certain gimmick builds (double shotguns/gatling guns + double songbirds on a tank leg base) make almost every boss fight mindlessly easy if you're really having trouble. The hardest parts of the game when you first run into them are more gimmicky stages like the one stealth mission early on where you fail from being spotted for too long, defend the missiles, defend the control tower, stop the hackers in NG+ or the second to last mission in NG++ chapter 5 (seriously fuck the first half of that one).

There's a bit of a learning curve to the early game because you don't have many parts to choose from and the difference in performance feels negligible from part to part at first, but the tutorial simulations that you have to do anyway to get some parts explain how pretty much everything works and the arena fights you do for chips give you an idea of how your go-to build actually handles.

So I've been playing the Rubicon's Inferno mod on and off on a new save and it seems kind of bullshit. I get that the base game is kind of easy, but putting end-game enemies in the first levels and increasing the enemy count by x5-x10 is more tedious than it is hard. There's not really many opportunities to split the enemies up that I've seen early on either, so it feels like it falls onto DS "bash your head against the wall until you can do this sequence frame-perfectly" style repetition to get through it.

The only mission where having a build changeup even helped was Attack the Watchpoint, where I used the sensor scan and vertical missiles on a lightweight build to cheese the PCA defenses in the first part, then swapped to my go-to MW generalist for the fight with the Sulla substitute and Balteus later (I pretty much just ignored the PCA clowns in the chamber). The "Improved" Balteus battle was enough to make me quit, though, since in addition to giving all of its gun attacks bazooka projectiles they also gave it two LC buddies to split your attention. It doesn't really matter what your build is if Balteus hits you with 10+ rapid-fire bazooka attacks.

Edit: I will say that the enemy count feels like it would probably be about right for a 2-player coop run. The best missions in the mod thus far imo were the missions with NPC allies like the dam attack and wallclimber. The dam mission was especially fun trying to take on the juggernaut they added while the Redguns distracted the chaff. I feel like with a buddy running a complementary build that's able to split the AI's attention then most missions would be still be challenging but not this intensely frustrating slog.

Small balance patch
Balance Adjustments
【Weapon Units】

HANDGUN “HG-004 DUCKETT” ・Decreased Attack Power; increased Recoil / Reload Time
CORAL RIFLE “IB-C03W1: WLT 011” ・Increased Impact / Accumulative Impact
MISSILE LAUNCHER “BML-G2/P03MLT-06” ・Decreased Weight
DETONATING MISSILE LAUNCHER “45-091 JVLN BETA” ・Increased Reload Time
PLASMA MISSILE LAUNCHER “Vvc-706PM” ・Decreased Weight

【Inner Parts】

BOOSTER “BST-G2/P04” ・Increased Upward Thrust
BOOSTER “BUERZEL/21D” ・Increased Upward Thrust
BOOSTER “BC-0600 12345” ・Increased Upward Thrust
BOOSTER “IA-C01B: GILLS” ・Increased Upward Thrust
GENERATOR “AG-T-005 HOKUSHI” ・Increased Post-Recovery EN Supply
GENERATOR “VP-20D” ・Increased Supply Recovery
Only major weapon change is the Duckett dropped to 249 damage (from 272) and takes 3 seconds to reload (from 2.5). Biggest change is probably recoil, which went from 30 to 49. I'm thinking this was to make it so that you can't use two effectively on lightweight/melee arms, but I don't have the time to test what arms can handle this now (I'm sure someone will figure this out before too long anyway).

Changes to upward thrust on boosters are nice since the only boosters which were good in that stat were the NGI and Gridwalker. Those two are still the best but now the 12345 and P04 join the Fluegel in the 5500+ club. 12345 booster went from a middling 5200 to 5784 (now third best), which if there are any VP-424 strider players still hanging around I'm sure they'll appreciate that small buff.

This is from the secret level show that they're doing, and those definitely look like ludlows and duo-3s (aka clearly AC6 weapons) on a frame that is very definitely not in the game. Maybe we'll be getting more parts in a future update?

We have yet to see any lightweight Balam frame or parts so hope these are going to be in game. Though why the heads are comically small, we'll never know.

On that note, a few 30MM AC6 kits were shown yesterday.
Honest Brute's Milk Tooth.

MELANDER frame + LUDLOW (peak core, will get 3 of them)

Weapon Set 6 (BUTTA pulse blade, pulse shield SU-Q5, 12 cells vertical missile launcher and TURNER)

Honestly, pretty good reveals aside from Milk Tooth that we already know from previous showcase's teaser.

I hope we get C3 parts soon, since I think the C3 headpiece is one of the best aesthetically in the entire game. C3 arms would be nice too.

Anyway, a secret level trailer showed up earlier today.
It appears our protagonist Johnny Core is voiced by Keanu Reeves. Unless they dubbed another character's voice over the pilot for...reasons. There's also a pretty slick combat sequence at 2:18 showing the AC I described in my last post slicing apart another (potentially new? I don't recognize it) AC with a laser blade. The two ACs are all equipped with AC6 weapons (the RJ has a laser blade and a haldeman, while the new unidentified AC has a dafeng gatling gun and the split missile launchers).

Edit: According to a redditor, the unidentified AC uses cut heavyweight Balam legs.

Johnny Core has a voice in his head. With that and the reference to "obsolete" augmentation, I'm pretty sure this is an AC 6 related story.

The earlier weapon loadout basically confirmed it to be (somewhat) related to AC6. Given the scenario of AC6, him working on a different planet outside of Rubicon system with different AC parts as well doesn't seem that far fetched.

New trailer. Shrieker appears to have an arm mounted pulse shield, which is interesting. Also a lot of 5th gen reminiscent wall-kicking in the latter part of the fight.

The audio design is really weak, way too much low end and no high end at all. Sounds like that thing generic AAA games do instead of Armored Core. Animation also looks a bit weightless. I was hoping it would be like the reveal trailer for 6 or the intro movies for the previous games.

I only recently heard of "Secret Level" and noticed they had an Armored Core short (God I haven't played AC in a while what the fuck is wrong with me), I'm...not too impressed, in fact like @Soggy Floppa said the audio design is not great. Visually it looks good but I'm not getting great vibes from it.

It's not beating Silent Line's opening CG that's for sure.
