I'm not a fan of artificial sweeteners. They taste too chemically and fake. Either I just use sugar or I go without. I don't have much of a sweet tooth anyways so no big loss.
The worst offender are the sugar alcohols because they make you shit your pants if you eat too many gummy bears.
The best of the diet colas is diet coke. They somehow made aspartame's fakeness work for them as part of the flavor.

I've found monk fruit, allulose, and erythritol are good artificial sweeteners for things like low calorie drinks. I haven't tried baking with them but they probably wouldn't work.
All of them are safe to consume, erythritol can cause bloating in some people and make them fart.

My parents kept me away from aspartame and sucralose from a young age and I've always kept to that.
Whenever I do accidently taste it (usually due to products switching) I never like it.

I've had diet coke before and it's like the flavour comes to a carcrash stop mid swig and is replaced with a rubbishy aftertaste. Pepsi Max is better imo.

Erythritol can also make high explosives if you have some sulfuric and nitric acid on hand. While you won't get PETN (pentaerythritol tetranitrate) from the reaction, you'll get ETN (erythritol tetranitrate) instead. ETN is more sensitive than PETN but I would assume it has similar brisance to PETN.

Regarding baking, I doubt that they would work well in dishes that require caramelization or fermentation (yeast) but for a baked goods risen with baking powder/soda most artificial sweeteners should be fine.

DISCLAIMER: The above is in no way intended to be anything other than satirical and educational. Don't try to make PETN/ETN in your garage with artificial sweetener. Do, however, make a cake with erythritol.

Stevia is the one I can handle, although it definitely isn't sugar it can help with sweetening foods. The rest are generally unpleasant.

Artificial sweeteners are disgusting in foods because sugar does a lot more than just make things sweet, for example, sugar content is a big factor that keeps ice cream from freezing solid. Most substitutes used in sugar free foods require some weird chemical wrangling to try to get them to resemble the normal version, most of which end up being an unappetizing approximation tailor-made for fatties who need their daily box of cookies despite having lord beetus circling above their feet.

In drinks, they tend to be more bearable because the main point of sugar in drinks is just for sweetness and the other flavors in a drink, especially one that's fairly complex like cola, easily overpower any of the off flavors that an artificial sweetener may impart.

Erythritol and Monk Fruit are the superior alternatives.

Whole Stevia is bad for you, if you have the wrong liver genotype. Frequent consumption will lead to liver failure. Rebaudioside A, which is just one part of whole Stevia, is perfectly safe.

Sucralose (Splenda) is known to fuck with the metabolism of some medications, so it should be avoided if you take meds.

Aspartame isn't dangerous, but it does taste like shit. Same for Saccharin, Acesulfame K, and Cyclamate.

For sweetening, honey is my no. 1 solution. It does not have the questionable nature of the refined sugars commonly used today, and is amazing on its own and as a topping as well.
From what I know, aspartame is literally a subtle, weaker nerve agent that will slowly but surely pozz your brain and nerves in years of consumption.
As for the rest, I generally stay away from anything synthetic, if I can. Our bodies were not designed to handle that stuff.

I can almost always taste artificial sweeteners, and some upset my stomach, so I avoid them like the plague. I do make a point to avoid most added sugars (with the exception of a little flavored creamer in my coffee) but I'd rather just give up ice cream than eat ice cream with nasty chemicals in it that tastes like crap.
That halo top stuff is nasty. And it's just an excuse for fatties to eat the entire pint. It's expensive too.

I tried that once, I think, or something like it! It was disgusting and the texture was completely wrong. Luckily it was on sale, so I didn't feel guilty about tossing it in the garbage. You're right, though, they only make those "diet" ice creams with the fake sugar and chemicals so people don't feel guilty about eating a ton of it. I guess the people who eat that shit must have destroyed their tastebuds from decades of eating "diet" shit that they don't even notice anymore. Which I know happens - I used to drink diet soda and when you stop for a while and try having it again that shit is foul; it was one of the first things that really got me thinking about how much more harmful "diet" products are and how many chemicals are in them just to make them taste even a little bit okay.

These days, I reckon the trick is just to let yourself have sugar in moderation. Have a couple spoonfuls of ice cream, or a soda once a month as a treat, whatever, so you're not stuck craving it all the time. nbd. Switching to the diet shit just means you're hurting yourself in a different way than if you were overconsuming regular sugars. At least that's how I feel about it.

I hate the taste of artificial sweeteners in anything besides soda because regular soda already tastes like chemicals; Actually, if anything it's an improvement as the "zero" sodas tend to not be cloyingly sweet. Of course, it's best to just drink water or tea but sometimes a man is weak and it's better to choose the lesser of two evils.

The only artificial sweetener I ever use is saccharin (Sweet'n Low).
Even then, I rarely use that. I usually just go with the real deal if I'm going to have something sweet.
