As a law-abiding citizen, what use is TOR and dark search engines?

  • 🔧 Actively working on site again.
You only need a VPN with tor if you live somewhere Tor is banned or can get you in trouble.
The only reason I use it is that permanent killswitch is super incompatible with things like split tunneling or otherwise poking a hole in the VPN. So having different policies for a clearnet connection to tor and for normal VPN traffic really presents a more serious threat than just sucking up the (mostly theoretical) hit to security from using tor after VPN.

People use TOR and similar security measures for the same reason people put curtains up in their house. Sure, no one is probably watching you but do you want to take the chance everything you're doing is exposed to someone else? This is the concept of digital hygiene. It's easier than ever to link someone's browsing habits and post history to their actual identity. The consequences of doing so have never been more extreme. Even if the nature of what you're doing isn't illegal it can still be held against you.

If your employer had the ability to pull up every post you ever made on this site how would they react?

The resources for data collection by both corporate and government parties is growing exponentially by the day and the only countermeasure to it is to adopt good digital hygiene practices. You live in a country that is openly hostile towards free speech and has a track record of arresting political dissidents for their online posts. A quick Google search for "uk hate speech arrests" will yield you hundreds if not thousands of examples.

Tor was made by glowies (glowniggers*), so I don't really assume any safety behind it.
So was the very backbone of the Internet and if you go back far enough the entire field of computers. You people parrot any phrase you pick up and then repeat it like it's some objective truth so you can feel like you know something when you really don't.

For the moment, it remains pretty niche, I won't say otherwise.
Tor is necessary for accessing some legal websites that might be of interest to you, like KF when it's down because of trannies.
Tor is useful for circumventing censorship in your country to access websites that are blocked, like some Chinese or Russian websites that they don't want you to access.
Tor is useful for privacy. Even if you don't do anything illegal, you might not want the government to be able to know that you have this or that opinion, or do this or that on the Internet. You don't need to have done anything illegal for them to take interest in you.

And even without breaking any laws, you might be interested to know that the best, cheapest, safest way to get drugs is on darknet markets. Plenty of drugs are not illegal and Tor is the best way to get them. When I lived in Europe that's what most smart people did actually.

I'm in England where most of the t'internet is uncensored. (as of yet, just wait until the online harm bill arrives)
You live in a nation that actively hunts down those guilty of wrongthink already. To answer your question, it pisses off the glowies by making their job that little bit harder and anything that annoys glowies is based.
