Culture Assassin's Creed Shadows Is Already Being Called "Woke" And "Disrespectful" - Assassin's Creed Shadows' two protagonists are getting the abuse we all sadly expected.

Assassin's Creed Shadows is already being labeled as "woke" and "disrespectful" following its announcement trailer, primarily due to main characters Naoe and Yasuke, the latter of whom is historically considered Japan's first black samurai.

Ubisoft has finally lifted the lid on the next mainline Assassin's Creed, revealing that Assassin's Creed Shadows will be available on November 15 later this year. While we didn't get any gameplay, we did get a lengthy cinematic trailer going into the backstories of the game's two main protagonists, Naoe and Yasuke. Naoe appears to be a Shinboi from the Japanese provinces, while Yasuke is considered to be Japan's first black samurai, and came into contact with several prominent figures in Japanese history.

That means Assassin's Creed Shadows will center around a woman and a black man, and some people on social media have reacted with exactly the kind of behavior we have come to expect nowadays whenever a protagonist isn't a straight white man. In the replies of Ubisoft's announcement tweet, you don't have to look very hard for people decrying the game as "woke" and "disrespectful", with a sprinkling of DEI in there for good measure.

Assassin's Creed Shadows' Yasuke Is Somehow "Disrespectful" To Japan

Most of the vitriol revolves around Yasuke, with some people taking issue with the fact that they're being made to play as a black man in a Feudal Japan setting, despite the character being a key figure in Japanese history. Some claim that it's inappropriate for Ubisoft to have someone who isn't native to the country as one of the main characters, though I don't think these same people take issue with the fact that the incredibly Welsh Edward Kenway was sailing around the Carribean in Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag.

You've also got some stating that Yasuke wasn't actually a samurai, but was a retainer to Oda Nobunaga, and that this somehow "disrespects" Japanese culture. However, people are already pointing out Yasuke was Nobunaga's Kosho, which is essentially the bodyguard or personal servant of a general or lord and is considered a samurai in Japanese history. Just because Yasuke didn't belong to a Samurai clan, it doesn't mean he wasn't one.

Assassins Creed Black Flag also had main cast black character with Jackdaw quartermaster Adéwalé. They even made a whole DLC where you get to play as him where you went around freeing slave ships. That didn't feel like forced diversity because the Caribbean throughout the 14th-17th centuries was filled to the brim with slave ships and former slaves turned pirates and abolitionists.

Yes, I take issue with an angloid pirate working with other angloid pirate in the most notable region of angloid piracy during the Age of Pirates.

What an epic burn, journo-scum.

Made?

The $70 I wasn't going to spend on this game is still safely in my pocket.

Yasuke is considered to be Japan's first black samurai...
If that were true, Mitsuhide would have been obliged to treat him as a samurai after Honnoji and ordered him to commit seppuku so that he could preserve his honor and serve his lord Nobunaga in the afterlife.
This would have been the conversation:

Instead, Mitsuhide gave him back to the Jesuits like any other piece of lost property.

It's hilarious because they won't even address the reality of the arguments. AC has already had two black protagonists and neither one of them drew any sizeable outrage - the chick in Liberation and Adewale in Freedom Cry (DLC but still) both made sense because of the setting and it wasn't a stretch to imagine some wayward escaped slave joining up with a pirate crew or some shit.

This shit is so blatantly tied to ESG/DEI bullshit in everything. If they actually cared about muh representation they would be happy to be able to be a western dev with the opportunity to tell a Japanese tale a la Ghost of Tsushima with Japanese history interweaved. But (((they))) want you to be miserable and suffer under the weight of their golem.

Gay nigger samurai might be fun if you could legit buckbreak tiny Japanese men in a quick time mini-game.

It’s always funny people are like “THIS IS JUST CHUD MALARKY!!!” When no one gives a shit about a black NPC or protagonist as long as the game is good and the story makes sense.

It’s like if I made an Assassin Creed set in Uganda except you play a white dwarf that murders all the negros with a bo staff covered in beads and having various tribal leaders praise you for it. I mean, yeah it’s funny, but it’s also retarded and bad.

Ass Creed has been dogshit since the 5th entry. Only the most brain-dead consumers are going to buy this shit so this journoscum is only preaching to the converted since anyone with any sense dropped this series long ago.
Honestly even the first one was dogshit anti-christian pro-muslim propaganda. How the series progressed farther than that is amazing

One thing I know about feudal Japan is they were a very diverse and open society. Not a closed and isolated caste based society with strict roles. I'm not even a fan of Japan nor it's history and I know the guy this is based on was nothing more then a court jester for some warlord and not some kind of soldier.
He was more like Oda's pet black friend.

I didn’t get that. Both the templars and assassins are depicted as atheistic using the Christians and Muslims to further their own ends. The Christians and Muslims are depicted almost identically, which is the “social narrative” of the game if there is one intended to be found at all.

That and you spent the DLC killing Fr*nch, another reason no one complained.

i cant play without disabled, retarded non binary character. those cis BIPOCS are really problematic. ubisoft, do better
I wonder if their diversity office has told their studios to make an Assassin in a wheelchair yet.
The next AssCreed (codename Hexe) will be aimed at a female audience, since it's about witches.
