We actually get hit with small rocks all the time. It's really a question of when a BIG rock is going to impact the planet.
There's no way of watching the 360' vision around Earth all the time, so a mega-meteor would come as a surprise.

Extinction of our species is actually very difficult to achieve. I'm reading a book on this at the moment.
Perhaps our planet needs a clean re-install and to delete SJWs and other failed branches of the race.

I agree with Curt. While mass extinctions do happen, I think that humans quite specifically wouldn't be as effected by it, even if it were an event which killed a large number of people. Humans are far too proliferated over the earth, and no event is going to be able to wipe out every single human without also destroying the entire planet itself.

With a fraction of the resources we squander on all kinds of idiotic shit, we could map the vast majority of the objects that pose any kind of real risk to us, identify the ones in orbits that pose a potential risk, and keep track of them. From any reasonable distance, it would be fairly trivial to knock them off course and even a slight deviation in their trajectory would result in a total miss.

Even considering the unlikelihood of the event, the fact that it would more or less annihilate civilization means it's ridiculous that we aren't doing it. We'd also probably discover some cool shit in the process.
