Culture At E3 this year, videogames bigots have lost - It's 2018 bigots!

Four years ago a row hit the games industry like an atomic bomb.

The treatment of women, within both the industry and the games themselves, was being scrutinised like never before. And, as journalists predicted that “gamers are over”, an angry, and at times vicious, movement emerged: Gamergate.

Supporters of Gamergate would say it was about “ethics in games journalism”. But it was quite openly more often than not about something else: women, minorities and hatred of so-called “social justice warriors” - the “SJWs” - as if social justice was something to be avoided.

It was a row that would go on to consume lives and careers, creating celebrities of likes of Milo Yiannopoulos as it went. In many respects, Gamergate was a dress rehearsal for what we refer to today as the alt-right.

In the new game, The Last of Us Part 2, Ellie is the lead. And as the trailer commences, we see her dancing slowly with a woman, her girlfriend, and they exchange a passionate kiss. The crowd cheered - not like excitable schoolboys seeing two girls make out, but like adults who had followed Ellie’s story and cared about the outcome.

“I think they were trying to make it clear to people that this is what they’re about,” said Julian Rizzo-Smith, a gay games journalist from Australia, whom I bumped into after the event.

“I think it was really setting a benchmark for what their future plans are. It’s a perfectly fine reflection of society. If you have a problem that it’s the biggest game of the show, that’s on you.”

Sony doesn’t stand alone in this. Microsoft, with its Xbox, also used one of its biggest titles this year - Gears 5 - to make a statement. For the first time in the franchise the lead character will be a woman, the ferocious Kait.

“It felt like a natural way to pivot the franchise a little bit,” said developer Rod Fergusson, speaking to Wired magazine. “And allow you to actually play the true hero of the story.”

Predictably, the decision raised some ire from certain corners of the gaming community.

“It’s amazing that Microsoft and The Coalition decided to take the most testosterone-driven, male-centric third-person shooter brand on the market and still find some way to inject it with third-wave feminism,” wrote the One Angry Gamer blog, decrying the “diversity agenda” in games.

'We're in 2018'

Across town, at an event hosted by EA, there’s a line of people baking under the LA sun in the hope of getting a chance to play Battlefield 5. For the first time, players will be able to play as a woman in that.

When news of the new game was published online, a backlash ensued, with some fans left incensed that adding women into the game would not be historically accurate. A hashtag, #notmybattlefield, was born.

Checking in with what’s left of the Gamergate movement these days finds little discussion about “ethics in games journalism”.

As I type this, topics on one of the movement’s most popular forums revolves around anger over the imprisonment of far-right figure Tommy Robinson, female Wikipedia editors, and how the left has supposedly infiltrated the games industry (and, by extension, everything else too).

What were once referred to as the “thinly-veiled” elements of Gamergate are now fully visible.

But it no longer matters. As I leave Los Angeles, with another E3 behind us, it’s clear that the Gamergate way of thinking has lost. The industry has stepped up - and video games will be all the better for it.

We'll probably be seeing Ellie with top surgery scars too as no one on tumblr can resist cutting off any woman's boobs to make her more interesting.

Is that really necessary? Almost everybody has bigger boobs than Ellen Page.

Not what I've seen from the E3 trailer.

Because LESBIANS. So progressive. And these evil gamers hate lesbians.

Ignoring the fact that men love lesbians. It's almost the number one porn search in most countries. Nobody is mad about girls kissing girls but you know, they have to have their evil gamer windmill to rant about like tards.
I tend to believe the author on that one as straight men are into good looking lesbians while Ellie's girlfriend is ugly like a motherfucker. Something tells me the gaming press wouldn't be so enthusiastic if most of the lesbians and action girls were from Japanese anime (influenced) games.

Gamergate is really their fictional monster in the closet, their tilting at windmills, their... whatever proper cliche term works here. In essence, being able to harp on Gamergate give them a villain to feel like they're triumphing over some vile, heinous beast, when its just a bunch of losers from one camp (dangerhairs and soyboys who jerk off to their egos and get relationship advice from memes), screeching at a bunch of losers from the other camp (your usual incel neckbeards who jerks off to Overwatch porn and gets relationship advice from moe anime).

They are accomplishing nothing, and the more smug, ass-patting they do, the more they oust themselves as giant flaming hypocrites who are (badly) hiding their own self-hatred and bigotry, behind a rapidly deteriorating veil of self-righteousness.

Its hilarious to me that they keep referencing gamergate, which no longer exists or occurs in any meaningful fashion. They're just really fucking bitter that they've become jokes to the gaming community and their articles are only read to be made fun of and mocked.

Wake me up when they aren't full of shit

I guess you'll be sleeping forever then.

Doesnt surprise me that microshit, decided to go feminist with gears.
After all the series has a past full of toxic masculinity and at one point in the lore, women were being used as breeding cattle inside breeding farms, that had been set up to make up for the huge number of people who died during the locust invasion.

Uh, am I having a memory lapse or did we watch the same E3? If I'm remembering right, I watched that and didn't hear much applause. Anyway, it's a toss-up. Some shit's worse, some shit's better, some shit's about the same. Let them think they had a huge victory over terrible gamers while we sit back and actually play games instead of bitching about em.

Being able to play as a gay character in a video game is not special. Mass Effect, Fallout, Fable, Skyrim - there are plenty of big name games that let you be gay. Fallout: New Vegas even had three canonically gay followers and all of them were well written, fleshed out characters with memorable personalities and questlines all their own. If you're a Fallout player and you don't love and respect Arcade Gannon you are a fraud.

They can't let go of something that helps in clickbait. While they churn out articles saying how you got angry misogynerds sperging over things like digital lesbians, everyone else isn't giving a care.

"Yes, but that is of no service to our agenda, now is it? So get that useless information out of my face."

Ellen Page was in Beyond Two Souls around the same time. Ellie in The Last of Us just happen to look like Ellen Page and happens to be a lesbian - but that was a year before Ellen Page came out as gay, what a coincidence right? Anyway, Ellen Page was very upset.

Gamers for pretty much forever have collectively not given the first shit about race, gender, or sexuality. Only once people started harvesting Patreonbux off of the 'gamers are bigot nazis' platform did anyone start speaking up against games doing that, and it was inevitably because the games were pandering cringe shit rather than inherently because of gay character X. And journalists, being the perceptive folks that they are, haven't done the first bit of research to actually be aware of all of the games that received universal acclaim from the bigot gamorsgators despite being full of the womens, the coloreds, and the queers.

Gears of War already had Anya Stroud? What was the problem back then?

You could play as an openly gay character since pretty much Ultima, which is like the dawn of PC gaming; you could literally play as an "other" gender in Ultima III and in Ultima VII you could interact with a male prostitute.

Playing as a gay/genderspecial character is literally nothing new. That's what irritates me about these hacks proclaiming it is, and it just shows they know jack shit about video games. Ellie kissing that chick is the definition of pandering, and the fact that so many people are gobbling it up and claiming that it's some sort of breakthrough irritates me more than it reasonably should.

She was A character, not the main protagonist.

And honestly it already felt forced when they added women in 3.
Now that they are making hipster girl the protagonist, because" it is about her!!" It is retarded. They even managed to cuck marcus in that trailer.
