Frankly, I'm just confused as to how we got here.

Like, it started with trying to get to some dude's basement, and it ended with global genocide because some incel couldn't get laid.

What the fuck happened?
The only thing I can fathom is that Isayma got bored with the horror aspect (him using one machine to kill ALL the titans on the island really hammered that home for me) when he didn't know what was in the basement. When he figured it out, he wanted to go crazy, nationalistic WWII story with Eren as his ubermensch.

He combined this with a ton of GoT stuff where Eren is his bae and Eren is basically leading the story around while everyone is basically incompetent. The problem is he never really set any decent antagonists to oppose Eren and Eren becomes the only driving force in the story, to the point where everything Eren does is "JUST AS PLANNED" no matter how fucking retarded it is. Basically he's setting everything up for maximum genocide and revenge on those filthy Chinese Maryleans. There's absolutely nothing in the story to indicate that he was lonely or he wanted someone, so obviously this wasn't present.

The entire set-up was basically Eren winning to the point where he had such overwhelming power that it was basically impossible to stop him without some asspull. The ending was 100% Eren fucking murders everyone and the world. I mean, its kind of written that all of the cringe avengers were going to fucking die.

His editors at all points have been going:

"Nah, he won't let a highly nationalistic genocidal insane person kill the world and the entire cast. That's just retarted and autistic."

Then his editors realized, very very late in the game, that Isayama was seriously going to let a highly nationalistic genocidal insane person kill the world and the entire cast because he is retarded and autistic. They went up to him and were like:

"Bro, you can't have fucking Hitler win. This is insane. Change it."

Then he just basically stopped caring. I fully believe Eren was the father of Historia's kid until he was told to change things. The reason is you don't have a main, important character get impregnated by a fucking faceless nobody. Its awful writing. I mean, Isayama's fucking awful, but I don't believe he's THAT fucking awful. Its just that the way he wanted to end it was denied, so he decided to fuck it.

So he couldn't have Eren win, which was his goal. The problem is at this point, Eren NOT winning is almost impossible without major asspulls. So he just does some retarded avengers shit he saw in the movies, have the cringe avengers win and that's that. He then just gets really angry and is: "If I can't have my Hitler ending, then I'm crashing this shit with no survivors" and just proceeds to fucking DEMOLISH his entire work by making Eren kill his mom all to fuck Mikasa and basically render the entire plot of the manga pointless, a problem that Eren himself created, never solves and never even comes close to succeeding at. He also has Mikasa mind-break and make out with a severed head for laughs. Which is fucking amazing.

Of course his motivation wasn't actually to fuck Mikasa, it is just what Isayma did when he couldn't have his WWII fanfic with Japan roflstomping everything and building a futuristic utopia on top of the ruins. So Isayama decides to take his ball and go home, and just fucking demolish the work he spent ten years doing.

I mean, if you look at it, its typical mangaka behavior when they get told by editors to change something. Of course, I think the editors were entirely justified but they should really have intervened a LOT earlier and went, "If you're going genocide, you can't have it end with the nationalistic genocidal insane person winning." I mean, maybe they were rolling around in money laughing and then when they finally started paying attention they went "HOLY FUCKING SHIT" and raced to Isayma's onsen and threatened to shit in every pool unless he changed the ending.

I honestly feel like this is the biggest spite move by a mangaka in probably all of manga history. I've NEVER seen someone utterly DEMOLISH and embarrass their protagonist like this, EVER.

The real question is why did Isayama want to change it from a pure horror story to thinly veiled WWII alternative fiction?

I'm sorry, but the more I think about this the funnier it gets.

Things Eren had the courage to do:
  • Have his own mother crushed by a big piece of wall, and her own house, and then have her eaten alive by a titan while her children watched
  • Willing traumatize his younger self by making him watch said event
  • Traumatize his own father into killing the royal family
  • Willing torture himself both emotionally, mentally, and physically by causing traumatic events and by constantly cutting off his limbs, gouging out his eyes, and generally just mutilating himself
  • Go missing for months in a country that hated him and his race
  • Get kidnapped like three times
  • Get his friends get severely injured, and/or killed
  • Join the military at age twelve
  • Fight giant monsters
  • Commit acts of terror
  • Kill civilians
  • Kill two men when he was eight
  • Commit global genocide and kill literally 80% of the world's population
Things Eren didn't have the courage to do:
  • Tell Mikasa he loved her
What.
What I will say is that Isayma, while being incompetent, is not THIS incompetent. It has all the signs of the mangaka being told he can't have the ending he wants and going, "You know what then? FUCK YOU."

And just taking a hammer and smashing everything and then going "THERE, ALL DONE. HE DID IT FOR THE PUSSY. HE'S NOT A HITLER, HE'S NOW AN INCEL KILLER. OH AND HE KILLED HIS MOM TOO. TRY GOING AND SELLING BACK ISSUES AND BLU-RAYS NOW OF THE ANGRY INCETOUS MATRICIDLE VIRGIN INCEL YOU FUCKING ASSHOLES. I'll be in my onsen AND YOU AREN'T FUCKING INVITED."

To me, it looks like a classic spite move by a mangaka who couldn't get approval for the ending he wanted. So he just destroyed everything. The problem is you have to go with what is written on the page, not what we believe went on behind the scenes (after all, there is a chance Isayama is just this fucking retarded and I'm giving him too much credit), so we just deal with the hand we're dealt. And that's Eren killed his mom, started the whole titan invasion and started a nationalistic revolution because he wanted to get his dick wet.

But honestly the ending is so jarring with what is presented before it, its kind of hard to believe this is what he intended. Love and relationships was NEVER a focus, EVER in the manga. To have that appear in the last second is really fucking suspect, because I've said many times (and a long time ago) that this was the most sexless, loveless manga I ever read, and now the central conflict is about relationships? Yeah, no.

I mean, it could be that the entirety of the first third of AoT was just luck and Isayama is actually the worst writer in the world, but I don't really buy that.

The Writer didn't know what was in some dude's basement, and everything after that was constantly trying to juggle the effects of what he made up while avoiding going into that basement and what he pulled out of his ass when he finally was forced to go into the basement.

See, this is what I REALLY don’t get.

If you’re going to have an important mystery that the protagonists are working toward solving, sure the AUDIENCE shouldn’t necessarily know what it is beforehand but YOU certainly should. And with a good mystery, you should be dropping hints here and there, so that audiences can pick up on the clues and make logical speculations on what the answer to the mystery is based on actual evidence from the source material.

People meme on One Piece and say “lol the real treasure was the friends we made along the way”, but if you’ve been paying attention it’s already pretty obvious what the One Piece actually is (e.g. a record of the true history of the world... and an actual gigantic treasure hoard of course) through setup that can literally be traced back to the very beginning of the manga.

You don’t need to plan out EVERYTHING in your story beforehand, but you really shouldn’t leave it up to “lol I’ll just figure it out later” when it comes to a massively important plot point that’s literally the driving motivation for the first half of your story.

It was obvious what was in the basement, the answer to what the titans were. Or you could just give pieces of the puzzle. You don't need to give the whole game away. The problem is that I think Isayama became bored of the horror aspect of it. Because he just rapidly kills off all the titans after the basement. So he's bored of horror, doesn't want to do horror anymore and REALLY wants to write this WWII fanfic...so that's what he does. Its basically an info dump on the background for his upcoming WWII-GoT series hybrid. Which is of course where the series went and is awful.

The delay was changing the genre to something else. It still didn't work IMO and he had to use a magical timeskip to make it so. I never imagined the thing with the basement was huge. But it turned into this.

Honestly, when he decided to change genres it really fucked everything up. If he wanted alternate WWII, he should have saved it for his next manga.

A reminder that we are in 2021 aka the same year where this image from Kaguya -sama (Chapter 220) have been talked about it on chan and shared it on twitter since last month: https://archive.md/5jGVU

You mean the one where they really love each other and don't want to admit it and finally after ages of fucking back and forth they bang and its SUPER controversial? Yeah. Its pretty fucking sad.

I think that at the very least the land outside the walls being much more advanced in technology than the society within the walls had been planned from the beginning. The scene in Castle Utgard when Reiner and Ymir both accidentally blow their covers to each other was focused around that can of herring- Reiner remarks on how dumbfounded he is that there's even canned food within the walls, which implies that canning isn't really a thing in the wall-dwelling societies and shows that he's from a society where it's relatively common. Ymir's lack of a reaction to the fact that it's canned also shows that she's from a similar society, and both were revealed to have come from outside the walls later in the season.

This was all the way back in season two, so the idea of a more advanced country beyond the walls has been around for a while. I have my doubts about shit like the Rumbling, though. I think that was just Isayama being an edgelord and trying to ape the success of NGE's Tangification of humanity or some shit.

That could just be a bit of anachronism at the time though. The vertical maneuvering gear having compressed gas cylinders is another piece of technology a pre industrial society shouldn't really have.
A larger outside world was very likely planned, but I think the exact nature of it was never thought through. The existence of human society outside what was thought to be the last remnant of human society is a great mystery and fits the tone of the manga back during its early days. But Paradis Island never seemed to fit the puzzle of being the last remnant of a continent spanning empire surrounded by more technologically advanced nations. For example Hizuru is supposed to have been the last ally of Eldia, and yet never made any attempts to contact its remnants. The inconsistency of the world building is so great that the story had to use the excuse of memory manipulation to explain why there's not more information about something which happened just a hundred years ago.
For example one could suspect that the fall of the Eldian empire was planned to be further back than 100 years, and that the outside world might have been something that had rebuilt itself after a greater devestation.

Honestly while I do enjoy the manga overall, the worldbuilding is indeed the biggest issue the series has as when the outside world was reached, there was nothing to really develop it whatsoever beyond just Marley and maybe Hizuru at best.

It doesn't help that I believe the over the top racism the world has was just an excuse by Isayama to not really do worldbuilding along with making it easy for the rumbling plot to function which honestly irritates me.

This makes Eren a reverse-Sasuke, honestly. Also not finishing the job with genocide is literally guaranteeing nothing but a worse ending than if he didn't do the rumbling at all. Legitimately, it would have been better if; some fucking how: the titans crushing everything ended up also crushing Paradis Island, thereby leaving nothing but Eren's friends behind. Could have justified it via Eren's mental breakdown as he was killing millions of people making it so he wasn't able to control them anymore.

I've said it before and I'll say it again...

I only watched the first two seasons of the AOT anime and was going to read the manga but got distracted and eventually lost interest.

Now I thank my lucky stars every day that I did, because I dodged a huge fucking bullet.

Also, Isayama needs to lay off the PCP.

Him becoming a bird is the most corniest, fucking eye-rolling shit there is. Poetic?
Why does David Bowie from Venture Brothers come to mind for me?

Frankly, I'm just confused as to how we got here.

And yet, we have people that think this is some top tier crap. Like, wtf. Almost any other show, comic, movie, game, etc. that veers way of course like this that I know would have been utterly trashed by fans and critics alike.

...yeah, ok I think I'm starting to understand how some of you could think that Eren is worse than Shinji.
