NEW YORK (Reuters) - An attacker stabbed five people late on Saturday at a Hasidic rabbi’s home in New York state and fled before apparently being arrested, a Jewish organization said, a rampage that came after days of increased tension over anti-Semitic assaults.


All five victims were taken to hospitals, the council said, adding that two of the victims were critical, with one of them stabbed at least six times.

“The suspect fled the scene, but he is in custody at this time,” the Ramapo Police Department said in a Facebook post.

The police department confirmed that five people were stabbed and said that the investigation was going on. The department did not provide any more details.

An OJPAC official, Yossi Gestetner, told the New York Times the attack happened at around 10 p.m. during a Hanukkah celebration that was being attended by many dozens of people at the rabbi’s home.


About a third of the population of Rockland County is Jewish, including a large enclave of Orthodox Jews who live in secluded communities.

New York Attorney General Letitia James said she was “deeply disturbed” by the events in Monsey.

“There is zero tolerance for acts of hate of any kind and we will continue to monitor this horrific situation,” she said in a Twitter post.

New York City’s police department said on Friday its officers were stepping up patrols in heavily Jewish neighborhoods following a spate of anti-Semitic attacks.

“Hate doesn’t have a home in our city,” Mayor Bill de Blasio wrote on Twitter, calling the assaults attacks on all New Yorkers.

In more deadly recent attacks, a gunman killed a female rabbi and wounded three people during Sabbath services at Congregation Chabad in Poway, near San Diego, on the last day of Passover in April 2019.


Six months before that, a gunman killed 11 worshipers at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh in the deadliest anti-Semitic attack in U.S. history.

I heard Cuomo on wcbs today. The interviewer called it a "loophole" that the black lady got out on bail for verbally attacking a jew. This is a terrible event. I can only express my hope that there are no revenge attacks against the many good people of the African-American community, and that the Shomrim that the American governments allow these Jews to use to commit crimes against blacks and non-Jews are not emboldened to increase their level of activity.

From what I've read about these enclaves, they take over other towns via placement of their fellow Jews on school boards and such. I've read up about Kiryas Joel, which leads the nation of people living in poverty, due to the males not working to study Torah and their women getting welfare. First we were told that the hate was caused by President Trump.

We knew it was a lie, because not one hate crime in NYC was carried out by a Trump supporter. Yet these are the talking points served to us by the liberal anti Trump establishment led by NYC Mayor Bill Deblasio and Governor Andrew Cuomo.

Let’s cut to the point.

Jews are sick and tired of the faux condemnations via tweet. ‎We are exhausted and incensed at the endless cycle of attack, tweet, statement, press conference, followed by twenty four hours of police coverage, rinse and repeat.

The Orthodox community is well within our rights to demand tangible action. Tragically the action we seek is the one thing our elected officials have been incapable or unwilling to provide, protection. A failure by our government at the very highest level.

Last night , before the blood on the floor of Rabbi Rottenberg’s home had dried – a Jewish person working for a prominent NYC elected official called YWN to ask us to publish his tweet which he said was “very strong condemning hatred and YWN should post it right away.‎”

We have had way more than enough.‎ Action not words is the only way forward for us.

YWN has demanded multiple times from Mayor Deblasio: List us the last 100 hate crimes in NYC, and tell us how many suspects were actually arrested. And from the few that were arrested, how many are actually still in jail? The answer remains zero. How can New Yorkers believe a word the Mayor says when the facts scream otherwise. We have no reason to doubt that his intent is likely good and he means well but unfortunately talk is cheap and Jewish blood is now flowing freely on his watch.‎ As uncomfortable as it is to say, The Mayor, as the Chief operating officer of NYC, is responsible for that bloodshed.

As for New York’s Governor, Orthodox Jews are onto him too. Does he think frightened Jews take any comfort in his disingenuous and artificial tweets? Like clockwork after every attack, he tweets that he is “directing the NY State Police Hate Crimes Task Force to investigate because hate has no home in New York” This boilerplate condemnation is now a running joke amongst political insiders. Here’s how it plays out (sounds familiar) attack, tweet, statement, rinse and repeat. Come on. How gullible does the Governor and his staff actually think we are?

As we’ve called here before, President Trump must immediately direct US Attorney General Barr to prosecute anyone arrested for a hate crime with federal hate crime charges. The jail terms are lengthy and word will get out to the streets, commit a hate crime, pay a heavy price.

Considering this happened in Rockland County, (basically American Israel if you saw pictures of some areas) I expected this to be an in community crime- jewish on jewish crime. Before I moved, there was always something on the news going over there with them having disputes with one another or fighting and shit.
