While it is a felony, it's not one that carries a huge prison term. And the fact he's spent time in jail for this could be in his favor as the defense could argue he's already served time. So most likely situation is he gets probation, goes back to the group home and is forbidden to be alone with Barb. Meaning he's never going back to the Sonichu temple unless it's supervised.

I understand Chris is severely autistic/mentally ill, but even like that he should not walk free after incest and rape.
Institutionalization in a psychiatric hospital or something should be possible in the US? I assume the DoJ or whatever department is responsible for prisons has psychiatric "care" (read: isolation) institutions?

Yes, but it is very hard to involuntarily commit somebody now for psychiatric reasons in the US, so often they just shove them in regular prison, mentally ill or not.

I would be surprised if he goes back to the same home, though, as Gateway specifically excludes people who are guilty of similar crimes to what Chris did.

Chris has demonstrated that he is grossly overestimated in those two traits. It’s the reason he acts as malicious as he does: there’s never been any tangible consequences. Even going to jail really didn’t change much since he by that point was a shut-in who needed structure in his life.
