We've known that some people on the spectrum are, unfortunately, very "low functioning" since who knows when. Sometimes scientific studies and expert opinions just figure out the obvious that everyone knows already.

I'm gonna sperg and sjw a bit but...

1. A lot of non-verbal autistics are written off as mentally retarded who later, when they gain communication tools (like tablets and whatnot), turn out to have average to above average intelligence.
2. Even ones who are mentally retarded don't deserve to be treated as subhuman burdens the way they often are.

Seriously though, autism varies from person to person, and how it can affect someone can vary on whether or not the parents are willing to go through with getting them the help they need.
