I think it was around when I was a kid but that a lot of times they was just thought of as "odd" or socially backwards.

This. The receding functionality of sexual thinggssss causes fucked genetics. Initially, genetics are at fault, but as the fuckers get older, shit doesn't work right and so the genetic problems arise.

I get the "You seem so normal!"/"I never would have guessed" one a lot. But then again my aspies is *really* mild.
storytime my roommate brought this dude over (well no she didn't actually bring him over, he ended up following her here even though she made it clear she didn't want him here) and he admitted he'd been diagnosed with Asperger's, then asked my roommate, "Do you need me to explain what Asperger's is?" and she was like "... No." (I mean she lives with an Aspie roommate!) But I was curious to hear his explanation so I looked at him and went "I WANNA HEAR YOUR EXPLANATION!" He says, "Do you not know what Asperger's is?" and without missing a beat I just went "Nope!"
He was hilariously misinformed. He pointed out that aspies tend to fixate on one thing, which is true, but he kind of got the scope of it wrong. Normally that refers to when autistic kids like, memorize train schedules and baseball stats but don't care about trains or baseball apart from that; he said it more as being the Whole thing (like, "obsessed with baseball", which tends to be the whole when in reality the fixation is on the part). He then said his two fixations were exercise (trying to impress my roommate, I suppose; he wasn't crazy fit) and... people. He claimed he understood people. And I was just thinking "?? ? ???? ??? ??? ? That like, goes against the entire point of autism. And besides, you failed to pick up when I was being clearly sarcastic earlier, and the fact that my roommate has stated multiple times she needs to change because she spilled coffee on herself."
That's not all, though; he went on to state that "There are three kinds of people: humans, autistics, and aspies." So apparently people with autism spectrum disorder are like, not even human now, they're superhuman or something. And let's not get into how if you're going to group people like that, you have to separate out legitimate mental retardation or those people that can remember everything that's happened in their lives or all the millions other neurological differences. Besides, let's not forget the whole thing about how as of the DSM-5, there is no Asperger's, just varying degrees of autism spectrum disorder. Even before that, the distinction was in functioning level, language development, and intelligence, which is really not a lot of difference when you consider the myriad similarities, certainly not enough to make aspies their own group of people.
His claim was that aspies were like the bridge between autistics and normal people (I ... get the feeling he has a Chris-type autistic solidarity except for Aspies) and then! He went on to state that the next generation of like, people, was going to be entirely autistic because "everything that's ever existed was invented by an autistic person". I may have Aspies but even I can tell you it takes a hell of a lot of normal people to make the world go round.
It was just so wtf and I wondered how someone could be so tragically misinformed.

I dunno....some of the points she makes are justified. I have real problems getting people to take the difficulties I face as an Aspergian seriously, especially in moments where I actually require assistance and "toughing it out" really is not an option. Somehow Asperger's has acquired the image of being "diet autism" which makes people view us not as people who actually require help with some things (although maybe not as much as other autistic people) but as eccentrics who refuse to be "normal".

I think I've mentioned before my dad was diagnosed with Asperger's in that narrow time after it was recognized by the medical community at large and before it was rolled into Autistic Spectrum Disorder. Of course he was born long before Dr. Asperger's work was widely known, and it was never bad enough to be called autism when he was growing up, so he went until he was in his 50s (and I was graduating college) before he even suspected.
As far as his parents knew he (and his brother, too, probably more severely) were just weird kids who appreciated things like trains and board games and history more than hanging out with friends. Being normal, loving, caring parents they accepted it and indulged some of their interests and presumably helped them to fit in*, and guess what? They ended up with mostly normal lives. My dad went into a career in engineering and then at the patent office, and started a family, and has many friends who share his interests. Just like plenty of autistic folk who aren't raised by a man so old and a woman so selfish they are beyond caring about their spawn.
An obvious similarity between the way they were raised and how functioning individuals with ASD these days are raised: they had to learn to fucking deal with it. In the modern case this is because unlike Chris they are taught not to use their disorder as an excuse, in my dad's case because it's a crutch he was never offered. Of course I'm not saying "well try not being autistic" or whatever, I'm saying that diagnosis or not, when your thought processes are so markedly different from the vast majority of society you have to learn to accept and work around those differences if you want to exist as a member of society. Or you can choose to demand society work around you and see how far that gets you. Hint: living with your mother at 32, jobless, friendless, without hope of starting a family, depressed and filled with anger, lashing out at the world you were taught to reject instead of embrace...
*I know this approach won't work with more severe cases, which is why it's a good thing these days we understand more about the disorder and how it impacts those who have it and are learning how to deal with it better.

I have a few family member with autism, all vary at different points of the spectrum. I'm not big on curing autism, but helping them and their families I think is the right step. I've been watching YouTube videos to help me better understand the condition, and what families go through, mainly because I have a an autistic character in my story, and to help me when babysitting my young cousin who is severely autistic and injures herself.

As a biologist, I'm glad one of us managed to come up with a serious answer.
I worked with adults and children with physical and mental handicaps for 6 years (even though all I did was teach swim lessons) and I had a few students on the spectrum.
