Brie Larson has vanished.

A star of Avengers: Endgame, one of the biggest movies of all time, was completely excised from a modified pirated version of the film — along with everything else in the film seen as feminist or gay.

An anonymous fan edited out shots, scenes and characters in a "defeminized" version circulating now on an illegal streaming site. As well as losing Larson's character, Captain Marvel, the defeminized edit is missing a scene where Hawkeye teaches his daughter to shoot. ("Young women should learn skills to become good wives and mothers and leave the fighting to men," the editor opined in an accompanying document.) The role of Black Panther is minimized. ("He's really not that important.") Spider-Man doesn't get rescued by women characters anymore. ("No need to.") And male characters no longer hug.

This particular defeminized edit is just the latest example of a trend, says Suzanne Scott, a professor of film and media studies at the University of Texas. A similar "chauvinist cut" of 2017's Star Wars: The Last Jedi removed key scenes of women making decisions, giving orders, having ideas and fighting in battle. So much was trimmed, Scott says, that only about 30% of the original film remained.

"It is borderline incomprehensible," she says. "It has cut out a lot of story that you need to make the whole narrative cohesive. So what's on the screen plays like an avant-garde film."

Fan edits of favorite films are nothing new. As long as they've had access to movies and editing tools, people have used material they care about to craft their own videos, sometimes involving alternative narratives.

About 20 years ago, a fan (and professional film editor) named Mike J. Nichols edited out a widely despised character from Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace. The character, Jar Jar Binks, had been critiqued as a racist stereotype, and The Phantom Edit, as it was quickly dubbed, earned a fair amount of attention and respect in Hollywood — even, allegedly, from within George Lucas' own studio.

But The Phantom Edit is very different in tone from newer defeminized edits. Scott says the emergence of misogynist, homophobic and racist cuts of blockbuster films reflects one particular thread of what's happening within fan communities — and in the larger culture.

"I think what we've seen, as fan culture and geek culture moves from the margins to the mainstream," she says, "is that a particular set — and I should note, a small percentage — of predominantly white straight male fans feel like their culture that they had ownership and claim over for many, many generations is sort of slipping away from them, as that culture gets bigger and inevitably more diverse."

Chauvinist cuts inevitably have their defenders, including this anonymous critic on YouTube taking humorless journalists to task for not getting the joke. Scott agrees with him strongly on one point: Shining light on defeminized edits likely rewards attention-seeking Internet trolls.

Another day at the office for journalists

Look at this brave, exciting and daring new moviecut made by ardent fans of the movie who envision a more progressive future. A re-imagining of Avengers: Endgame where the narrative becomes a deftly woven and gains an avant-garde quality that respects viewers intelligence and ability to keep up, by removing all scenes with men....

wait what? They removed the scenes with women? I thought they removed the scenes with men? Oh, my bad.

It's borderline incomprehensible, it has cut out a lot of story that you need to make the whole narrative cohesive, made by chauvinist straigth white males. The emergence of misogynist, homophobic and racist cuts of blockbuster films reflects one particular thread of what's happening within fan communities — and in the larger culture.

...along with everything else in the film seen as feminist or gay.
Should've just removed the entire film, because superhero movies are gay in general.

On a slightly more serious note, people hate these characters not because they're "women", but because they're bland, unmemorable and uncharacterised, other than having 'grrrl power' and being able to overcome anything without breaking a sweat. How many times do people have to point at Sarah Connor/Ellen Ripley until people start understanding what "strong woman protagonist" really is?

Editing large chunks of the movie to remove a character is kind of dumb though, unless it's done for a joke of some sort.

Her presence is of little consequence, to the point where it’s annoying that she was shoe-horned into it.
i think the CM hype as "the next big marvel hero" began after larson filmed endgame scenes ala black panther in infinity war. thus these overhyped characters are not given as big a roles as the main avengers

The possibility that they started overhyping her after seeing her full performance in endgame is far more baffling to me. People went nuts for Black Panther too but I thought he was cool as shit in Civil War so it felt justified. Larson’s not bad in the role or anything, she just didn’t leave much of an impression. It would be like if they decided Paul Bettany would be the face of the MCU going forward.

I think this is the torrent they are reeing about.

- No Hawkeye training his daughter. Young women should learn skills to become good wives and mothers and leave the fighting to men.
- No women leader conference, no gay support group talk, ...
:story:
Downloaded the read.me with all the changes.
Avengers: Endgame De-Feminized Fanedit (aka Anti-Cheese-Cut)
Avengers: Endgame De-Feminized Fanedit, aka Anti-Cheese-Cut, aka Straight White Male Edition

It's Endgame, but no feminism, no gay shit, no boring filler and lengthy fanservice, no constant quips; and other small changes.

720p x264, 192kbps AAC, 1h 25m runtime

Based on the V3 cam. Image is rather good for a cam, audio is fantastic (probably line, no audience noises at all and great quality).

General list of changes, in no particular order:
- Absolutely no Brie Larson, neither in the beginning nor in the finale. Hence Anti-Cheese. (Get it?)
- The Stan Lee themed Marvel intro from Captain Marvel was cut into this. This should very obviously have been the movie to have it in the first place.
- Women in final battle severely reduced. They should be at home taking care of their kids. In particular Pepper has no business being there. Does she want her daughter to become an orphan?
- Obviously no women-heros roundabout shot.
- Spiderman doesn't get rescued by women two times, there's no need to.
- Black Widow doesn't throw Hawkeye off of herself, instead he directly jumps. She still rescues him, but fails to hold onto his hand and falls down directly. More dynamic and realistic.
- No Peter-Tony talking and hugging in the middle of the battle. That's how you get yourself killed.
- Thanos immediately notices the stones are gone from the gauntlet. No "I am inevitable", no "I am Iron Man" crap. He just realizes his error, has a little bit of time to feel the shock of his failure and then he's blasted away.
- Tony doesn't die in Pepper's arms, she isn't there. Rather, Peter talks to him and then he dies.
- Black Panther isn't the first revived Avenger to arrive and gets a bit less time. He's really not that important. Also, no Wakanda apechant.
- Female sorceress gets scared of Hulk and just gives him the stone. Their talk was just a giant plothole anyway.
- Any science babble that isn't necessary to understand the story is gone. Nothing takes you out of a movie quite like obvious pseudo-science. Besides, the movie is full of plotholes anyway, may as well stop pretending that anything makes sense.
- Wanda's scenes in final battle are gone. She made everyone else look useless, just like Brie did.
- No women leader conference, no gay support group talk, ...
- No dumb kitchen psychology dialogue. For example when Hawkeye says "I wish she could know we won.", Wanda doesn't say "She knows. They all do.", she just looks at him sadly in agreement. Nat is fucking dead, she doesn't know shit; Hawkeye isn't a child you have to lie to.
- Moping/Dialogue/Filler in first act severely reduced, time travel happens after ~30 minutes.
- Most of the constant lame quips have been edited out to give a more consistent serious tone. Examples: Fortnite, Dab, America's ass, etc.
- No Nebula-Wifi. She gets kidnapped and they read her memory, that's it.
- Tony doesn't meet his dad, it's pointless. They succeed on first try in New York.
- Thor doesn't meet his mom, it's pointless and boring and more kitchen psychology nonsense.
- No Hawkeye training his daughter to shoot arrows scene. Young women should learn skills to become good wives and mothers and leave the fighting to men.
- No Thor being told he can't wield the gauntlet. Hulk simply says he will do it and that's it.
- No Quill & Gamora reunion. Hence also no Quill getting kicked in his balls for no reason.
- Valkyrie is barely in it, and certainly doesn't become queen. After Ragnarok she should be sitting in a dungeon for treason making sandwiches for Thor.
- Thor's whining reduced. Sadly he's unsalvageable in general, but I did the best to make him more dignified.
- Many little adjustments, tightenings, rescored parts and cuts of unnecessary stuff.
- No Captain America time travel paradox plothole and pussying out. The movie just cuts to black the moment he travels into the past to bring back the stones.
- Everything after final battle again strongly shortened. Nobody needs all that reduntant shit and its boring to watch.
- In general, whenever it felt like Marvel sniffing its own farts, that part is probably gone.

Not all the cuts are perfect, but all things considered I think it works pretty well. In particular the first act, but also the second act are much tighter and more on point now, in my opinion anyway. The final battle has only a handful of cuts in comparison, because action is fun to watch and the whole point of the movie. If you're in this to cry like a bitch all the time, watch the normal version. The main character arcs of course still exist, they're just not as tedious anymore.

Q & A:
Who influenced your work?
- My greatest editing influence is Candace Owens. But some of her montage ideas are frankly too radical even for my taste.

Are you an MRA?
- I'm member of a Christian Alt-Right organization called Luther Institute Georgetown-Manchester-Arlington.
This shit is amazing, either a legit loony or a god-tier troll

Hell, I'd watch a version that just has Captain Marvel cut out but with literally every other scene left in. I think Captain Marvel's boring as hell and she wasn't necessary in the movie.

That being said, maybe the journalist should realise what "bait" is.
