Babylon 5 - A underrated sci-fi show.

Holy shit. I love this series. I had to rent it out from the local library when I was a teen. Had no clue my father had also watched it. Best character was Abrahamus Linconi.

Best bit was that there was actual warfare and buildup. And it wasn't halfassed.

Was sad to see Sinclair go, was sadder to learn WHY the actor had to leave the show.

I wasn't really sold on Sinclair in the first season but after learning what the actor went through, I respect the actor so much.

He got diagnosed with schizophrenia midway through the first season, yet he insisted on finishing the season, a season where a reoccurring line being told to him is, "There is a hole in your mind." And then, he insisted that JMS tell everyone about what really happened after he dies, because he felt the fans were entitled to an explanation.

I feel sad that he's gone now. Honestly, B5's actors don't have much luck when it comes to health.

Anyway, I loved the show a lot...except I never finished Season 5, god that was a bad idea...

I will always remember Sinclair fondly. At the time, being a young teen and all, I didn't know what was going on behind the scenes and was very disappointed the character was replaced so soon. Sinclair and Garibaldi were just the best. Oddly enough I never really liked G'Kar as a character while I was a huge Katsulas fan.
Another issue I had with the entire series was the fact you had to basically watch every episode to make sense of the story and character development, which made it hard for my younger self to actually follow the plot as I watched only casually. You know what, I think I totally need to rewatch the show from start to finish.

I liked Garibaldi when he was just a security chief. I never liked the super hacker/spy shit later.

Yeah. That's what I meant. I wasn't even aware of him becoming a Chad. I enjoyed the show when it launched, but never kept up.

I always thought it was kinda bad. The character writing for Londo and Gkar was really the best actual part of the show. But everything else was either bad, mediocre, or hilariously bad. Everything to do with PsiCorp and the Earth Alliance had me laughing my ass off, the Shadows War was incredibly dull, Ivanova and Franklin were mostly a snoozefest, the show looked fantastically dated for its time and now, the season 4 conclusion was so unsatisfying and rushed that it actually made me take a 4 month delay for watching season 5 because JMS decided showing the viewers up to a million or so years in the future was apparently the best idea when you're potentially getting canceled and not lazy as fuck.
I'm rewatching it now and my opinion on the show has basically not changed at all too. It's fun, but absolutely dumb fun.

Yeah, they're dying off faster that Star Trek TOS characters, and most of them are much younger. Katsulanas died from smoking his whole life, Jeff Conaway from alchohol and substance abuse, Michael O'Hare from psychosis, Jerry Doyle from....something.

I think Sinclair was coming into his element as the season ended, and could have been just as good as Sheridan, if not for the actor's health issues. It's really evident during his return episode that's he's not well, I can't imagine how much harder it is to act when on anti-psychosis drugs, and it showed, it almost seemed that he had to be reminded by the crew to blink occasionally.

That episode wasn't filmed until after they found out that Season 5 was happening. Originally, Sleeping in Light was the last episode of season 4, but when the show got unexpecedly renewed they had to push that back to the end of season 5 and shoot a new finale for season 4 in a bit of a rush.

i was gien this on Christmas day 2017, i still have no idea what Crusade is about or why it is part of the box set

This is one of my favourite shows of all time. Glad to see there are other Kiwis who appreciate it.
Ashamed to admit I have never watched it. Is this a good show to marathon or is it better to take your time with it?
I watched the whole thing over the course of about two months, and at times I was bingeing about 7 episodes a day (I was unemployed at the time). I’d say either way is fine. It’s a great show and deserves to be enjoyed.

Season 5 is a bit of a letdown. JMS literally thought the show would be cancelled so he rushed to finish everything in Season 4, only to be told there would be a fifth season after all. He then had to come up with new stories for Season 5 very quickly because most of what would’ve been Season 5 had been done in Season 4, and on top of that, his original notes for Season 5 were accidentally thrown out meaning he had to start from scratch.

It’s a wonder we got anything remotely coherent.

Crusade was the spin-off they did afterwards. It was cancelled after one short season and got fucked around with endlessly by the network beforehand. Basically, everything that happened to Firefly happened to Crusade first. What we have isn’t great, but as others have pointed out, Babylon 5‘s first season was quite rough, so given time it could’ve been something special.

I'd say it's my favourite space opera series, in close tie with Star Trek, Doctor Who, Battlestar Galactica and Firefly.

And I have to agree, season 4 feels very rushed while season 5 feels a bit meaningless. The Shadow War, to which half the series led to, then happened in just like a dozen episodes and we don't see much of the Earth Alliance Civil War.

The viewing order for Crusade is very confusing.
