I would like to start a thread about peoples experiences with terrible managers and bosses. I unfortunately have some experience with this and am experiencing it now, so part of this is me grieving my pretty decent job.

To keep things fairly brief, one manager I had to deal with was a fairly attractive woman who was actually fairly competent. This married with kids grown woman would openly flirt with the 20 year old new hire, leaving together regularly with him and being shocked when people noticed and pointed it out. This turned her hostile very quickly and she drove myself and a few others out before management got rid of her. I was always surprised at her little comments about she doesn't care about her husband or kids. Pure evil, really.

My current manager is also evil, but extremely stupid, making it easier to navigate. I mean mouthbreathing, crosseyed, useless stupid. For whatever reason, probably jealousy or whatever it is retarded people hold grudges over, it appears hes been misrepresenting me to his bosses. I'm working on correcting this, but this shitbag has had nothing good to say about me since he took over as manager, which has been a disasterous move.

work is gay and people make it gayer. Stupid people should be hunted for sport
 
I had a project manager who was tasked with moving us from dedicated workstations to doing everything on the cloud because of 'security concerns', and when we asked what would happen if the security team didn't approve stuff like Slack or Teams under the new setup he said we'd 'just have to build our own'.

When we obviously told him how fucking insane that was he literally put his fingers in his ears and said we weren't talking about it any more. (The project was eventually abandoned.)
 
Oh boy, I've had a ton of those.

Most recently, I had this manager bitch.
Physically beautiful but such a dumb cunt that after a week, I didn't see the prettiness, I saw the stupidity and venom.
The boss would have a request like "We need to rearrange these things a bit" and when she would tell me his request it would be "we need to rearrange these things BECAUSE THE WAY YOU DID IT BEFORE WAS SHIT".
I knew where this was going so I got a bodycam.
One day, she says some nasty shit and I shout "STOP TALKING TO ME LIKE THAT, BITCH!!!"
Then she suddenly starts talking about how I was violent to her... that's when I snapped, I'm allergic to false accusations.
I pointed to my bodycam and told her that if she accuses me of violence again, I'm taking her and this entire fucking company to court (her family owned it so I could potentially bankrupt all of them at once).
I worked there for maybe another month, she never said anything to me again, she asked others to talk to me instead.

And that's one of like 20 fucks that I had issues with during my work years, I've got stories for days.
 
I had a retail boss who would bully her employees for not being able to keep up with work despite her HR lady scheduling everyone once every two to three weeks. When you needed her she would be in the office and would yell at you over the walkie. The accounting major in me felt weary because she was the only one in the cash office and the cash office lady just…stopped getting hours. I quit not long after I got a whole MONTH without hours, also fuck that retail chain and I’m happy they’re losing relevance.
 
My current manager is actually brilliant and the best I’ve ever had. She’s this great mix of highly competent yet human, so she will show you anything you’re going wrong on and keep you in line, but have your back completely. She’s very good.
Previous line managers have varied. Most were just disinterested. I had one utter psycho at my last job who was a raging alcoholic and openly told me she tripped up all her direct reports so she had ‘something on them, like a first strike’ and could easily get rid of anyone she disliked. She was dreadful.
My current bosses’s boss is this terrifying woman, the platonic ideal of the heartless corporate monster. She dislikes me and my boss is terrified of her. I think she’d kill us both for a percentage rise in any of the metrics she’s obsessed with.
 
I'm in a really weird situation, my boss is a great guy - SUPER knowledgeable and experienced, really friendly, and really cares about me and the other two guys that work "for" him. Unfortunately he is absolutely terrible at communication and delegation, so we unintentionally get screwed almost every time when we interact with any part of the business outside of his direct control.

He's also a pretty terrible teacher, so even though we want to take some of the workload off of him, we can't because he can't/won't really show us how to do it (I'm not sure if this is because he doesn't want to burden us with shit he knows we don't want to do (computer shit), or because he'll wind up spending as much time checking our work as it would take him to do it himself).

Just one of those positions where his weakness (communication) has a huge negative impact on me despite him being a great guy and well-intentioned.

On top of this it's an extremely weird situation where none of us need this job. We are all wealthy enough to not work at all, we just do this because we enjoy it and the company (which is a very cool company) cannot manage to replace us with any young ones. Either they are too weak to deal with the field conditions or not smart enough to do the technical work.

I think back on my military career and I really only had two terrible bosses over the whole 20 years. One guy got a court martial in Afghanistan (and he was an O-6, so that's fucking saying something) but he was really just a moronic dickhead, not an asshole; then another one was a Genral who ticked every single bad boss trait ever made. She was a shrill, self-important micro-manager of the nth degree who actively shit on and fucked up the legacy of the guy she replaced who was a beloved and good guy (technically she was my boss's boss, but we'll count it).

I guess a big part of that in the last 14 years of my career I really only saw my bosses once or twice a year, and I was just assigned to an O-6 who just had ADCON of me, and for the most part they understood that.

I swear there's about a two year part of my military career that I'm not sure I actually had a boss.
 
Given that I work retail and with a company known for not keeping good managers and endorsing shitty ones, I've seen quite a mixture of both bad and good line ups in the three years I've bothered working for my store.

My store's management has a thing where they give team lead positions over like candy, so I've seen about two (currently one) people get a position they're totally unprepared for and only wanted the monetary boost. It shows because they can't and don't grasp the importance of what it is like to lead a team. They always operate like it is their way or go fuck yourself.

I've bitched about one of the coaches I've dealt with in other posts. He really, really looks like Joakim Broden from Sabaton which to me is awesome. But at the same time, he's one of those assholes that overworks you, as he's done to me. If he sees how reliable you are, he will zone in on it and work you to death until you're finding yourself in 1 on 1 meetings about performance, as he's done to me.

The store manager overall is an oblivious bitch whose tone always sounds like she's just gaslighting you to respond to it, just so she can exercise her power over you. I can't rely on her for anything, she'll always take a TL or Coach's side over you, even if a write-up is unfair across the board.

The store lead got knocked up recently so she's been walking around with a big belly, but she can be just as bad, but more in a passive way so it can be harder to notice.

Currently with who I'm dealing with, I don't like the coach I put up with for the three days I deal with him of the work week. The asshole I put up with on Sundays is another over-worker who has pushed me to my limits and stress levels. There's only maybe two team leads who I like, we as I referenced before, got a new team lead who is a stupid nigger who came back to us after two years of being gone. He was a dead beat then, he's a dead beat now, worse now that he's a dead beat with power. I just hope we never cross paths because I'll call him out on it.

I don't think he'll make it though, because he's finding out "oh shit, I actually have responsibility?" Yeah, nigger, you do. It's not just a title.

And yet they all stupidly wonder why I take so much time off, always brushing against 4.5 points, always "abusing" my PTO/PPTO.
 
One boss was illiterate. Not like haha joke illiterate but he couldn't read or write above a second grade level. Born and raised speaking English, too. I had to severely dumb down emails and memos to him and then when he'd send me stuff, it would take a good ten minutes to parse what he was trying to say. But other than that, he left me alone to do my job and was great in every other aspect.

Another boss had a watch that cost more than my car and was a total dick. Constantly undermined me and sandbagged me in meetings. I got to hear about how his bitch ex-wife all the time, poor lady, and how everyone was always to get his money, which he did have a lot of. He went over my head and rehired the guy I fired for being drunk as hell at work and causing six figure accident that ended up with the EPA getting involved. I quit a few days later. Fuck that guy. And he made some remark about my then-gf that, in hindsight. should have resulted in me breaking his jaw on the spot.

Other than that I've had good bosses and when I was the boss of a place I did my best to treat everyone fairly and even found a rehab place for my employees who was one bender away from drinking themself to death.

No real assholes (outside of some drunk restaurant managers), but any manager that:
  • Tries to keep a meeting going with side topics not necessarily related to the meeting.
  • Unable to end a meeting on time because they have to keep talking. And, talking. And, this is my fourth meeting today and it's not even lunch, please stop talking.
  • Is too busy or has too many reports to keep up with your tasks.
 
My current store manager is a 70 year old boomer who in the year since he's been here, has turned our store from the number one store in the state to the second worst.

He insults employees, rules with an iron fist, cuts labor because he wants to get as much of a bonus as he can, and does that dog shit where he guilt trips you if you DARE call in sick.

My fiance works as the bookkeeper in our store and has regular migraines, that get bad enough that she has to go to urgent Care. The store knows this and normally lets her leave if one pops up. She's on medication for it, so they've gone from a once a month kind of thing to a three or four times a year affair.

Our store is in a very old person focused neighborhood, so we get swamped on specific days, such as sunday's after church and senior day, that happens on the first Wednesday of a month. On this senior day she had a migraine, one of our assistants told her to sit in the office for an hour and see if it goes away, it it doesn't they'd send her home.

The store manager comes in an hour later, she tells him her migraine is worse and she needs to go home.

A normal person would have said sure, go home I hope you feel better.

This faggot looks her in the eye and goes "No you can't go home, it's senior day, we need you to cashier when you aren't bookkeeping."

So my fiance, who's way to fucking nice for her own good tries to tough it out, ends up puking for an hour in her office until one of the assistant managers tells him to go fuck himself and lets me take her to urgent care, since I was on the clock at the same time, though I didn't know she had been puking, the last thing she told me before I was called to get her was that she was going to try and go home, so I thought she was home until I found out otherwise.

This fucker then has the gal to ask if I'm going to come back and finish my shift.

This has been the norm for our store for the last year, because of this guy we constantly lose employees and have been so understaffed that our district manager had to force him to hire people.

Well like a dickhead can be well intentioned and/or a good guy who is either just incompetent or uninformed or just a poor leader (which can also be for a multitude of reasons). An asshole usually isn't necessarily incompetent, but is only interested in self aggrandisement, promoting their agenda, or actively fucking up getting business done, for no good reason. And they're oblivious to, for example, the conditions required to make an organization function smoothly.

A subtle difference, possibly at the time, but it will seem obvious and distinct in hindsight.

So I've been at my current job since October. My boss is an Indian woman and for most of my time here, my only other coworkers are another Indian woman and a blerd who was hired like a month after I was. Needless to say, it's a miserable work environment. On top of being Indian and a woman, she's also a striver girlboss who takes pride in working long hours outside of the usual work hours while also making it our problem. She's one of those kinds who genuinely believes in and dedicated herself to every company's bullshit about growth.

I was never trained or onboarded with anything regarding the work that this team does, plus my manager also does not believe in such things, going so far as to say that she isn't here to be our teacher and that we should figure things out ourselves. My teammates aren't much help either, especially the other Indian girl who is much more tenured than the blerd and I. My manager uses this as a justification to not give me any work, saying I don't have the requisite understanding, and then shames me for not producing any work, and whatever work I actually do is literally never appreciated, it's always insufficient somehow. It's like at some point between my joining and December, she decided that she doesn't like me and never intends to.

Since December, we've been having weekly progress meetings where she reiterates the previously laid out line of thinking to me, face to face. I thought of this as a PIP but apparently it's not, but she's actually gone and skipped the PIP and has moved on to offboarding me basically. There's no final date for me yet, but she has been in contact with HR since March about firing me. It's not like I'm going to miss this job and team, but I'm really nervous about going back into this horrible job market and economy to risk the same thing possibly happening again. Regardless, I'm done with working in banking and finance, pay cut and opportunities be damned, and I am most emphatically never working for an Indian ever again.
 
Every Indian manager I've ever had has always had this weird aversion to talking to other people directly and instead insisting I act as the go-between. Literally once I got asked to ask someone a question who was on the other side of the manager's cubicle wall. The other issue is that a lot of them will just say yes to their boss without checking it's something that their department can actually do. One dude volunteered us for some stuff our sales team should have handled and couldn't understand why we didn't have access to the sales data. Unfortunately, the Indian before him got promoted and will only hire Indians, so that's not going away any time soon.

Also, they love to waste your time by giving you useless bullshit to do even when you already have a full plate.

Dude, go to HR, point out you've been untrained, and then ask to be switched to a different team. Guessing you're not Indian, so this woman is probably trying to get rid of you so she can replace you with her cousin or something. Get out ahead of it.
