In an overnight operation, Baltimore removed four Confederate monuments from the city, rushing to get them down in the early hours of Wednesday morning. The removals came hours after President Trump defended the white nationalist demonstrators who rallied in Charlottesville, Virginia, in unrest over the weekend that led to the death of one 32-year-old woman and two Virginia state troopers.

The statues were taken down at the order of Mayor Catherine Pugh with the unanimous support of the city council, which passed a resolution on Monday. Pugh told the Baltimore Sun she was surprised that more hadn’t been done to remove the statues before her term.

“I am a responsible person, so we moved as quickly as we could,” she said.

A small group of contractors took the monuments down with cranes, guarded by police and flanked by a small TV crew, a few night-owl activists, and Pugh, who told the Baltimore Sun that she personally watched the statues come down.

The four statues removed were:

  • Robert E. Lee and Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson Monument, which showed the two Confederate generals on horseback, put up in 1948.
  • Confederate Soldiers and Sailors Monument, which depicts the allegorical figure of “Glory” holding a dying Confederate soldier in one arm and a laurel crown in the other, built in 1903.
  • Roger B. Taney Monument, depicting the Supreme Court chief justice who wrote the 1857 Dred Scott decision, which affirmed that black Americans had no claim to citizenship, built in 1887. While Taney wasn’t officially a member of the Confederacy, he stood as a symbol for the support of slavery.
  • Confederate Women’s Monument, which celebrate the role of women in the Civil War, dedicated in 1917.
The monuments were put on flatbed trucks and escorted out of town by police.

On Wednesday morning, all that was left of the city’s Confederate monuments were a handful of empty pedestals. As a result of the removals, no symbols of the Confederacy remain on public grounds in Baltimore.

The removals came hours after Trump reaffirmed his initial remarks on the Charlottesville protests that “many sides” were responsible for the violence. On Monday, he condemned (reading from prepared remarks) white supremacist groups, and on Tuesday spoke off the cuff at a press gathering at Trump Tower, reasserting that he believed there was “blame on both sides.”

Well, he was against miscegenation.
and his preferred solution to the slavery problem was to free the slaves, then send all of them back to Africa by boat.

Regarding the removal of even more statues,

Lol everybody's fucking exceptional in this situation. It's like a battle royale of failure.

Goose stepping, weekend warriors that Hitler himself would be ashamed to see defending his legacy, however infamous.

Edgy sympathizers of a failed, traitor nation that existed only to keep the pocketbooks of the fat landowners propagating it loaded; and think that wearing a dumb knock off of our flag on their trucks and shirts is 'honoring history and culture.'

A bunch of bitchy college age cucks and cunts who have literally no other purpose or agenda beyond calling out people to fite them irl, and think that when they eventually get smacked down for what amounts to criminal acts of vandalism, calling the cops shitlords, racists, and fascists will get them out of jail.

And then finally, literally every platform of modern social media from twitter to Furaffinity blowing up with shitposting nazi stomping memes. It's like the Kony 2012 people finally got off that bone dry teat and realized they needed something else to give themselves a pat on the back for.

There was no way in hell this whole thing was gonna go down peacefully or without any of these sides screeching at the other. History is all fine and dandy, and remembering the past is imperative for getting a sense of what kind of future you're looking to, but nobody realizes the can of worms they've opened now that this latest controversy has unfolded.

But that's okay kiwis, those worms come pre-packaged in a whole heap of salt. Savor this blessed shitshow before it all dies away.

Honestly, Maryland was an uncommitted state, and only maybe deserves to have statues of southern heroes adorning it. I mean that's nice of them to have honored us for any length of time? I wouldn't fight Maryland on it, but then, I wouldn't want them in the CSA anyway.

There were enough secessionist sympathizers that when Lincoln took the train through Maryland on the way from Illinois to DC for his inauguration, he had to wear a disguise and be guarded by plainclothes Pinkertons for fear of being lynched by the locals. And before martial law was enforced, there were some fatal riots between Maryland secessionists and Unionist German militia volunteers.

Either they get defended with heavy armed men and plenty of firepower or they all come down.

Shame they didn't do this in the 90s though, we would already have had a dozen major bombings by now.

People seem to be doing the "I'm Spartacus" thing and all going to get arrested for tearing down the statue. Didn't they get photos of the idiots who did it as the plastered them all over social media? Would be great to see each of the the idiots queuing up to be arrested charged with obstruction of justice.

That was Lincoln's too. Its real odd that the Amendments were made like they were. I suspect had enough Union Generals had an issue with it, it would have led to a continuation of the Civil War, Westeros style.

Somehow Nazis don't realize murdering people in the name of their cause actually causes a backlash.

They're not terribly bright.
Just wait until they don't bother denying shit anymore, and instead of police avoiding a handful of a dozen neighborhoods, they have to avoid....oh, the entirety of America? Either Trump comes down hard and orders police to protect Free Speech like they are supposed to, or this is going to get extremely ugly. A lot of those young men at that rally? Not a damn thing to lose.
A lot of the problems that led to the war, and the problems that came about because of it, were never really addressed. The South is still poor, maligned or laughed at constantly, ends up dealing with a lot of crime from border crap,
No, its mostly the traditional minorities. Mostly.
and has even worse infrastructure then the rest of the country.
Actually no, not true anymore across most of the South. TVA, Air Conditioning(not even joking, nearly the entire population of the country was in the Rust Belt, then Air Conditioning for individual homes and such exploded, and the entirety of the Southern Belt of states from California to Florida exploded in population), and the Southern Ports and the Mississippi getting used more has helped fix some of that.
That breeds a shitload of resentment. Confederate monuments are an idiotic hill to die on, but at least a few frustrations that brought us to this situation have some merit.

One of the issues is of course taxes and trade. But thats complicated by sociopolitical issues.

Yawn. These statues aren't made to celebrate the soldiers. They were made to glorify the South at a time when the KKK was having a resurgence.

And the KKK are the ultimate lolcows, running a giant pyramid scheme that made the Trans LifeLine scam look like child's play while running around in sheets so no one would see their faces when they behaved in ways they would be ashamed to be seen acting.

If these monuments had really been erected in the generation after the war, there'd be a historical case for them. As it is, they were generally erected either during the KKK-resurgence era of the 1910s-20s, or the Civil Rights era to intimidate black people at school and university campuses, as well as government buildings.

These aren't grand historical works. They're bullshit propaganda created by a group that was basically Amway or Avon for people who liked to talk a lot about white pride.

See, now you know that, and if the statue is still there if you have a kiddo of your own you can be like "Now see here lil Timmy, that statue over there was made by the KKK and here's why them and the confederate dudes are dicks". Even if the statues weren't actually put up by some confederate people and were actually put up by racist KKK dudes in the 1910s, that's history too. That was 100 years ago. Erasing all of that won't help anyone.

200 years from now Keith might forget to tell his son Billy-Bob about that villainous gang of old called the KKK that built some dumb statues. or the fail peeps of the Confederacy that tried to make a country and have a bunch of slaves, then you end up with an :autism: kid who tries to repeat the whole bedsheet MLM scheme shit since he doesn't know better and thinks he has a ~great new idea~, and thus a future lolcow is born.

Gonna be honest, if there's one thing I love about social media it's that dumb criminals can be caught so easily with it.

The other thing to note was that at the time, the KKK numbered over 1million. They were significantly larger than the entire US Military. If they hadn't been a bunch of pussies, then they could have handed out a rifle, 50 rounds of ammunition, a pistol and 20 rounds of ammunition, and said to hell with votes and demographically corrected America themselves.

They had the manpower and the firepower was available, there was no need for them to go begging for votes.

It's like we're living in a South Park episode and this is just what we now have to deal with.

Now there's an alternate history timeline I'd love to read!

This is why education (especially history) is very important.

They're going for the big leagues!
By the way, the Twitter headline read "Let's Blow Up Mount Rushmore"
I don't suppose they have any plans for what they want to put up there instead (hopefully not Jesus)?

Gonna be honest, if there's one thing I love about social media it's that dumb criminals can be caught so easily with it.
Our saving grace!
