With Paul Skenes being announced as the NL starter for the ASG in his rookie year, I’d like to ask anyone who crusaded against Elly De La Cruz being in the ASG last year where they’re at on this.
What makes Skenes more special than Cruz? Can’t be the team he’s on, because both players are in middling franchises. Is it position? One can make an argument about positional importance, but this is a team sport.
Maybe it could be statistics? At the break last year, Cruz was hitting 325, on base 363, slugging 524. Combined 887 OPS with 41 hits, 4 HRs, and had hit for the cycle in his 15th career game. Yet he didn’t get into the ASG. He was setting Cincinnati on fire as well as the league, but Orlando Arcia and Dansby fucking Swanson got the vote. And people defended that! But no one is questioning Skenes.
Make it make sense.
