So, was Basil Poledouris the greatest composer of film scores ever to exist, or merely of the last 100 years.

He was unique. A lot of his scores brought a very different feel than the John Williams and the like.
His Conan scores truly feel like something from an ancient and forgotten age.

While Conan the Barbarian is clearly the great film score of all time, I don't think anything else he's done, or at least what I've heard is anywhere near the same league. Conan works because there's memorable theme after memorable theme. The other scores I've heard from him tend to just have a few great ones each. Even Conan the Destroyer doesn't stand up to it.
A bit critical there, but I do own a bunch of his works on CD. If you want the one most similar to Conan, check out the forgotten Flesh & Blood soundtrack.
