BattleBots - IT'S ROBOT FIGHTING TIME (probably spoilers)

Goodnight sweet prince. At least you managed to humiliate a couple of troonbots before you died.

In retrospect I'm glad Robot Wars got cancelled. The last series has aged like wine and it never got pozzed by modern politics. It's one of the few things I still remember 100% fondly.

Oh he'll come back eventually. But next time the Hypershock bikini's going to be on 24/7.

BattleBots Update has ended as of today.

The news was expected but I guess it's for real now. If the series hasn't been cancelled and manages to still go on it'll be weird watching the show and not having an article to look forward to.
Was gonna happen eventually. Can't blame Draco for leaving if he's not getting the engagement he once did, plus going through some of the comments here when the Minotaur vs Witch Doctor fight happened showed the community has changed somewhat.
I do know that if a new season does happen the guy doing the write ups for the matches here will have to grab the screenshots himself instead of borrowing from BBU. As a resource to the community, it had that same utility that smark websites do for pro-wrestling.

Archive of that and the reddit thread.

Pretty much as soon as the Robot Wars revival ended the entire robot combat community just seemed to go to hell. There was a web series made in the UK called Bugglebots that ran for two seasons and pretty much from the start it was garbage. The team captain of Nelly from BattleBots hosted the show. Here's one of the competitors:

Like, what the fuck even is this? The troon on the left amusingly has the unfortunate last name "Mann" and then on the right there's some mystery meat ethnicity genderblob. You can't see it in the photo but they/them are wearing skin tight leggings that look like a pack of fucking Lifesavers and yes it looks like stockings filled with cottage cheese. It's been half a decade or so now but I remember much of the show being like this and pandering to this kind of mental illness. Sporkinok showed up in BattleBots not long after this show took place and naturally the troon who designed the robot was pushed forward by the producers of the show for DEI good boy points.

Also both Sporkinok and the robot in the photo above (Nightinggale) were total shit. Neither one was ever fully functional and was a total embarrassment.

She's a super heavyweight.

"To add insult to injury, we’re hearing Caesars Entertainment may use the BattleBot building for F1-related events."
Ouch. They did announce Faceoffs as a primer for WCVIII.

Team Scorpios is saying that while Destruct-a-thon is on Hiatus, they'll be retaining pitcrews and staff for Faceoffs sometime soon.

Do you think Draco/BBU knew? Like, way ahead of time? Because it's only been a couple of weeks since he ended the blog and it just so happens almost immediately afterward news comes out that Destruct-A-Thon is ending and BattleBots was never able to work out another contract with Discovery. I get the impression he knew this was coming because otherwise it seemed like a very random time to just say "thanks for everything" and end a project like that.

Either way, it's sad to see BattleBots come to an end. Again. But 7 more seasons was a good run and honestly I feel like the decade hiatus between the two runs of the show did it a favor because it allowed technology to advance in the meantime so when the show came back on the air in 2015 all of the robots felt super powered compared to the ones on Comedy Central.

Yes, with the benefit of hindsight its obvious. He's also deep in the community and talks to both teams and Greg and Trey. Whether it was that BB was dead on tv or that they were shutting down the live show and dismantling the Battlenox, who knows.

For what its worth, I was a lot more bearish on BB than most people after the merger. Zzsalav probably tried to super lowball them due to having enough old episodes to put the show into syndication and just use it for reruns. BB didn't want to dilute itself with a poor product (its their IP on the line here, not Discovery's) and said no. Reruns hold zero interest to me and won't work long time but its just numbers on a graph to him, if that shit works for nature and animal shows it works for BB too, right?

He does know builders personally, he's talked to Greg and Trey multiple times. I'd say that he did. I think behind the scenes Greg talked with the builders that Discovery is dragging their feet on getting a season 8 and as a result they can't put on a show this year and have to cancel Destruct-A-Thon. Draco heard this and thought it was the perfect time to bow out rather than having to do another write up of a season that may not come.

Malice's team is saying the Faceoffs will be streamed to Youtube.

Battlebots costs millions to produce and makes millions more. They might, if they're lucky, make 50k a year on youtube.

Edit: The live show isn't affiliated with Discovery in any way and was, much like RE:Mars was never getting anywhere near a Discovery/Maxx airing. You all don't seem to appreciate the time and effort put into post-production on this show. Audio-correction, sight angle choices, adding or removing commentary for dead air or mistakes, cutting the downtime between fights, it all adds up.

They just constantly shoot themselves in the foot when it comes to monetizing their recorded media. For example, if you don't personally go to Vegas to see Destruct-A-Thon then sometimes BattleBots will share videos of some of the better fights (such as the Proving Grounds ones that featured hopeful newcomers)... except they only posted these videos to Facebook, where they were not monetized in any way. Also to see them you had to pledge $5 to BattleBots on Facebook like a Patreon subscription. They rarely if ever promoted this information. The only reason most people saw Proving Grounds fights is because the teams who competed in them received copies of the fight videos and they would just post them to their own social media pages.

BattleBots could very easily just upload raw fights, maybe with the post-fight interviews if that footage exists, to their YouTube channel and monetize them. Hell they could even drip feed monetized promo content to YouTube and then funnel traffic to an official Patreon or something (because who the fuck uses Facebook and pledges money through it) where pledging $5 a month gets you access to X number of fight videos every month, $10 gets you stuff from Destruct-A-Thon, and $20 gets you the raw HD fight footage. I know that's not substantial money for a company that operates in the millions but it's the bare minimum to at least have the endeavor essentially pay for itself and the bigger takeaway is having a constant stream of content keeps your name out there and your business relevant.

The Facebook Premium stuff is the dumbest thing. Until the last season they would hide the fight cards behind it until a day or two before each episode aired. You know, wouldn't want fans to get excited about the upcoming show and talking about it at school or anything now, would you? A friendly wager between people who haven't checked spoilers to see who is "guaranteed" to win? Of course I always knew who was fighting anyway, without paying them a dime.*

*I didn't pirate the actual episodes though and thus always showed up when it actually counted, Discovery+ user data.

I completely forgot about that. For a few seasons they announced competitors exclusively to Facebook supporters too by way of these little promotional pictures of the robot, the team, and the country they were from. The only people who got to see this info were supporters though so it effectively built up zero hype because the 99.9% of people who don't do the Facebook shit couldn't build up hype around all the robots and politely argue over who would win it all that year. Absolutely stupid.

If people are willing to give terrible left wing podcasters $500,000 a month on Patreon to make mediocre content I guarantee you these guys could get their fans to give them around the same.
If they did all the other monetization sponsorships on top of that it would not be hard to make an independent venture

This one commenter does bring up a good point.

Warner Bros might be in the toilet with so much debt but Battlebots isn't. It's a STEM focused show that's had 5 seasons worth content that any streaming service would kill for. It could be Greg wants to use this little tournament to show that Battlebots is still viable while shopping it around to other networks. If Warner won't pay for a new season, maybe Hulu will.
Ray is also planning to show up with Tombstone. His hand is also better despite his age.

Discovery owns the streaming rights to "their" seasons of Battlebots, seemingly in perpetuity, just like Viacom and ABC seem to with theirs.

Two sorta news things.

Destruct - A - Thon has been saved. They're revamping the show and incorporating the Face/Off rounds into the live show every week end, with the fights to be uploaded to Youtube. The winners of these will get in Season 8. Fights start September 8.
Said Season 8 is supposed to be "Filming early 2025". Buuuuut they said that last year too so take that as an estimated time frame and not concrete.
