Battletech - Also known as Trannytech

Changing subjects entirely, has anyone found any way to run MechWarrior 4 (Vengeance and/or Mercs) on a modern system without the thing spazzing the fuck out? I got a hankerin' for some stompin', and I really don't feel like giving PGI or the EGS full price for MW5.

I know for a fact it can run on Win 7 without issue, you could try VMing it. I dont think I've played it since I switched to 10 though.

Is there something specific that causes issues? I know I ran it just fine on 7 without problems. If you're worried about the DRM causing issues... *cough*.

Last time I tried to get it running it just said something in my system wasn't supported, can't remember the exact error message. Even on my old Win7 rig it kept going to shitty software mode for no reason I could discern or remedy, both the official version and the MekTek version.

At this point, I'm wondering if the easiest way to run old games wasn't setting up a Raspberry Pi with a copy of a really old Windows and run those games on there.

Bit of a sidenote, but I once tried to start up an old game called Hardwar (it was really ahead of its time) and the launcher didn't allow me to install it, since it literally didn't recognize harddrives with more than 1GB of space... so after trying to find a solution online and coming up with threads that recommended setting up a small dedicated portion of my regular disk space for this game with enough space to install it but not too much to trigger the installer to bug out, I simply installed it on an old USB-stick.
Sometimes, modern problems require old solutions.

Same. On the few times it decided to work, I had that silly issue that the 'Mech spun at 1000RPM in the MechLab, and going between menus and missions caused the screen resolution to bounce all over the place. Even when it did settle down, I had some weird visual glitches.

That game definitely needs a compatibility layer in Current Year.

That's... impressive, since it wasn't actually developed by PDX.
HBS as usual, bit off more than they could chew and promised more than they could deliver. Still waiting on that co op mode they promised before the Kickstarter.

I haven't tried it yet, but a friend highly recommends RogueTech.

Doing a playthrough of Paradox Battletech, do any of the DLCs add anything of note to the game or am I good?
Heavy Metal adds a couple weapon-types and mechs.
Flashpoints adds mini-campaigns and a few mechs and weapon-types
Urban Warfare adds ... well ... Urban maps.

The most significant change are the Urban Warfare maps and the Flashpoints, which at least spice up things a little by breaking the mold of the usual mission types and adding a bit of flavour.
The new Mechs and weapons are neat, but unless you absolutely die to have an LB-X or an Ultra-AC, you can do without, I guess. Since every unit by default gives you spotting and indirect fire, TAG instead gives a bonus on damage to ballistic and energy weapons (for some weird reason).

Overall, I would not recommend any of them at full price, but they are decent enough when you get them cheap during a sale.

The DLCs actually ruin the game play.
How so?

Iirc when they came out they broke abilities hardcore. I've honestly not played the game since 2018 since it's optimized like ass and imo has zero actual replayability outside of catching Pokemon once you finish the main campaign.

There is a new game mechanic with stealth, which is rather meh tbh, but apparently, it was utterly broken when it came out. Other than that, nothing seems that unbalanced to me.

Also, for what it's worth, I have finished the campaign months ago and still play from time to time. The Flashpoints especially add a lot of playability to the game, imho.

You know, with this thread expanding beyond just HBS's game, I would vote to change the thread's tagline to "Also known as 'TismTech".

I'm seriously considering trying to VM or WINE MW3 in Linux to see if I can make it work that way, because Jesus fucking Christ the MWO queue tonight is an absolute shitshow.

I actually still have my MW3 and Pirate's Moon discs, too. Holy shit I might be able to get this to work.

Tell us if you get it to work. I got MW3's soundtrack (baller!) but I never played the actual game because... yeah, White Devil is right: you need a degree in black magic to get that shit to run these days.

It's honestly the best MW game, which is typical fucking Battletech since it never goddamn works.

I know the guy is being very thorough and taking his time but... Jesus fucking Christ, no game should require a 40 minute walkthrough just to get running.
