Battletech - Also known as Trannytech

A lot of the early mechs look like anime bullshit because they basically are. https://www.sarna.net/wiki/Unseen
Mech designs were licensed from some company that imports anime shows by FASA, although it was later found they didn't have the right to license out designs like that. (Or something like that, at least.) This has led to some really chinky, ugly designs from that time. Some of the art in the original books doesn't help either imo.
I've been playing this game since the late 90s. Believe me, I'm well aware of the unseen.

But the OG Incubus is something else in the field of anime bullshit, man. Because while the Unseen were licensed, the Incubus was commissioned. They intended it for it to be anime bullshit, down to the handheld gun.

In regards to the catapult, I remember being a little basso. Learning to play and kinda derping around aimlessly with my catapult and she was ammo dry.

Older guy (probably like 17 looking back) explains no get in their and zap and kick (to the extreme) yeah catapults are way more a brawler than you think and happen to have a lot of lrms lol.

4 meds and a 65 ton kick is no joke for intro tech!
It doesn't feel like a lot, but then you remember that those 4 MLs and 13-point kick are presumably getting applied to whoever ate 2-4 LRM-30 volleys on the way to the brawl. They're not fantastic weapons by themselves, but they're much better when you've sandblasted half the other guy's armor in advance.

My apologies. I didn't even realize that. I agree the handheld gun stuff was always dumb though.
That makes it twice as horrifying that it's supposed to look like that basically.

That's why I like the RG:IC version. They managed to keep the general shapes, but bring the proportions down to something more similar to a Commando or a Panther.

A few years ago they added a new Tbolt variant that just has an AC/20 and LRM-10 and it absolutely fucks, no one ever expects the Tbolt to hit that hard.
I like calling them 'HunchBolts' for obvious reasons. I don't see them often, but they're a force to be reckoned with when they do show up.

I've always had a soft spot for the Hunchback. No frills, no fancy stuff, just a big gun stuck on a Mech. And that's just the 'normal' variant.
I like the IIC because it has 2 big guns, but hated how it was always a steel coffin you’d put your elderly mechwarriors in.

Another one I’ve been fond of is the piranha. An underrated clan mech that’s great at clearing out infantry, light vehicles and weapons teams. The first time I got to use one was against a terrible meme list where it was just VTOLs and savanna masters. Being able to shoot them up enough to either kill them or rattle them was fun.

Ew. That's just a fat yen lol wang.
Pass. (Coming from someone who loves their t bolts)

Shadow Hawk and it's not even close. It looks perfect. Laser in the arm, missiles in the chest/head and a shoulder cannon. It's the Vitruvian Man of Battlemechs. I use the 5M all the time on the tabletop just so I get to see it on the table. I run it with a RAC5 in MW5. I'll use it in Clans if it's available. Not that abortion the clanners slapped together though. I wouldn't hit a dog in the ass with a IIC. A Shadow Hawk without a shoulder cannon is an affront to the design.
Its either that or the Victor for me. The Victor also looks pretty sweet and while it does have an AC/20 for surprise assrape it doesn't feel the need to overcompensate like the Atlas does. Yeah, the weapons are a bit short ranged but its fast as hell and in the MechWarrior games (my only real experience with BT) its not hard to swap out the AC/20 for an AC/10 and add an LRM if you feel like a fire support design that can bully mediums and keep up with many of them, like a weird mix between an Enforcer and Centurion that's 80 tons. Hell, there's a reason a Gauss rifle is common in so many upgrades. The extra range pairs nicely with the speed. The Victor may be big, but there's not really a whole lot of jobs it can't do since its faster than you'd think. A solid workhorse just like the Shadow Hawk, at least relative to its own size class.

Of course, there is the VTR-10S for when you feel the need to overcompensate with a heavy gauss rifle and a regular gauss rifle. Can't jump, needs an XL, and the HGR is split between the RT and CT so you may as well make your peace with God every time you climb in the cockpit same as you would if you were sitting on a full ton of MG ammo somewhere, but the option is there for the perpetually suicidal looking to take someone with them.

Much love for the Victor. My lance got BTFO'd the first time by the Sortek's Victor in Legend of the Kestral Lancers. Went in way under equipped since we weren't using a deadline delay mod. I think that one had a Gauss in the arm. It reminds me of a grown up Vindicator. Another mech I love for its mass production chic design. Shame about its (the Vindicator) association with Capellan scum.

Yeah, his Dragonslayer is nasty. You're right about the gauss rifle in the arm. Its got a PPC in the left, a couple of MPL in the RT, and an SRM-6 in the left, with endo, DHS, and an XL. One can only wonder where the Davions dredged all that up, but if anyone earned all of that it would be Hanse's personal right-hand man. The Prince's Champion operates as his troubleshooter for when the Prince isn't around, and considering House Kurita continues to exist there's a great many troubles that need to be shot.

EDIT: Oh, one thing that was brought up in another chat after I mentioned the Victor 10S was its AMS. I had completely forgotten about it, but I went and double-checked and AMS ammo explodes the same as MG ammo does. So, congratulations to it, its now fully at Hunchback IIC levels of suicidal thinking.

I love the Catapult model. Both C4 and K2 variants.
I remember the first time I saw a K2 in the Battletech PC game. "What the fuck, that Catapult has lasers? OH SHIT IT HAS LASERS."

The idea of swapping out hardpoints like that for entire different weapon types just never clicked.

Victors are cool. They often get a bit of hate because they are fat heavies and people expect them to have more armor than they do. You don't get jumping 4/6 intro with out giving something up and the victor has teeth!

It's a great cav mech imo. But often I find it's really dice dependant esp introtech games since you gotta jump in pop that big AC and get out. Lucky hits on way in and or wiffing your uge fuck off gun makes it a waste of BV.

On top of that it also has the Rugged quirk, so in a campaign its easy to maintain and keep going.

It's also easy to fix the armor issue if you want to improve survivability. Either remove the jumpjets or downgrade the AC/20 to a 10, then max out the armor. Both are easy field modifications and I've used both to good effect in MegaMek and Mechwarrior.

Kodiaks are pretty cool, they’re one of the few clan mechs with a melee weapon and can destroy a single mech every turn.

Might as well make my first post here. Aesthetic wise, my favourite IS mechs in each of the weight classes are the Raven, the Hunchback, the Archer and the Highlander. I like my lighter mechs sleek and the heavier ones more blocky.

That's a fair lineup. All iconic mechs and nothing wrong with that.

Actually, it occurs to me that I forgot another two favorites of mine: the Thanatos and the Argus. Two more from MW4:V, but I love them for different reasons. The Thanatos is just the perfect walking brick. All-business, zero chill. The Argus is just so goofy and asymmetrical I can't help but love it. Very fun medium-range loadout on the 4D version, too. "Yo, dawg! I heard you like 5-point clusters!".

My favorite mech? Well its a 3 way tie between the 3 Marauders.

my top 5 though besides the Marauders.

Incubus
Gladiator
Thunderbolt
Cougar
Orion.
