Battletech - Also known as Trannytech

I seem to recall specific rules for mechs carrying other guns and switching them out. It's rare and I can't remember the name of the mech but it does exist.

Yeah, it's a shame they never implemented any kind of actual rules for them, as it's pointless given that they don't function apart from that specific mech. External equipment and weapons that mechs could carry with limited ammo stores could be pretty cool.
There's a variant of the Axeman that swaps the axe with a gun that has limited ammo.

As people have said there are rules for them but from what I can remember the few times I've played around with them outside of a few niche uses they're pretty bad.

Nothing new there. The Hilux is the preferred combat vehicle of militaries on a budget for a reason since it can carry everything from HMG's to AA guns to ATGM's. Not sure why BattleTech should be any different.

Hell, the image for the Jeep on Sarna even kinda vaguely looks like a knockoff Warthog. What you should be more concerned about is that it somehow mounts a ton and a half of armor despite not even having a roof or doors.
Reminds me of the Shandra Scout Vehicle. I always wonder WHERE exactly the armor on this vehicle is

What the fuck am I reading here?

If you dip deep into any of the tranny spaces, "mecha pilots as a trans allegory" is pretty fucking common. I have no idea why, but I'm sure it's connected to AGP fetish shit somehow. There's a reason "I identify as an attack helicopter" triggered them so hard.

What really activates the almonds is -- is this why, or because, they went after battletech?

PRobably because it's the "next big thing that needs some diversity". Bah. Those idiots would probably never realize that piloting a Protomech is way more up their alley considering you need extensive surgery to even be able to pilot such a thing and then you need a constant dose of drugs to not loose your mind. Huh. Maybe there IS the trans allegory they looked for

I'm going to assume it's Gundam. Very humanoid mecha and traumawanking would fit the bill just fine.
If it's Gundam I would guess Iron-blooded Orphans as you can only pilot a Gundam series machine if you have thew Vajiah system (or what it is called) to actaully operate it.

Problem is protomechs suck in a lot of situations and only really fit into a specific niche that other units already fill anyway. They also suffer from the crippling illness known as Not-a-mech-itis so your pool of potential players to game with is going to be smaller.

So they are debatably useless special snowflakes.

Just like troons.

Well CGL is going to be updating the models of the primary Protomechs.

Given the nature of the original designs I don't think anyone is going to be upset with the design choices.

Easy, just treat all MG ammo as if it was mounted in a location with CASE. It destroys the location but not the rest of the 'Mech. It's a decent enough compromise for me, because while it shouldn't turn the entire 'Mech into confetti, half a ton of .50 BMG going full popcorn would absolutely wreck anything in its neighborhood.
I wouldn't even give it that. MGs are short ranged and barely do any damage as is.

Consider: a ton of MG ammo explodes, dealing 400 damage (200 x 2). This is equivalent to four tons of AC/20 ammo cooking off.

No. Just no. I wouldn't even track MG ammo -- it has a location, but you don't track ammo expenditures. How many games (outside of S7 rules) need to track MG rounds fired?

Crit the ammo? You wreck the ammo bin and feed. Just roll for crit chance on the possibility a cooking-off .50 round goes through something important.

If you allow for rapid fire then you have to since a MG is going to use 3-18 per turn of firing.
This. The rapid fire rule is essentially mandatory if you're running anything with machineguns. And since a lot of designs carry them in pairs or even trios, you can actually empty a half-ton bin surprisingly quickly.

Otherwise, just dump the ammo or come in with the bin empty. MGs are a fun meme but they're inconsequential on anything other than very light units trying to circlestrafe or brawl.

We do a lot of combined arms but we're all old fags our "youngest" in terms of playing years has been in to BT 10+ years.
We can't find a way to make protos worth painting, let alone playing. We're all into mechs but we know how to run good Vees pbi BA etc. protos just suck.

For no good reason I'd like to point out quick draws are super fun in mw5 even vanilla let alone modded. Pure mook mechs but basically a fat jenner and that can be really fucking cool.
