To be fair, I'm pretty sure the goons were just all-in on Capellans to piss off the FedCom-loving majority. The whole Word of Lowtax thing squeaked through about a year before the trannies had completely overrun SA, so going around trolling people wasn't yet overly problematic and a bad look yikes.
Yep. I was in WoL. We were drunk and troon-free and still saying faggot on teamspeak without issue. You can't even find the original massive MWO thread anymore because troons deleted it and banned the OG players eventually, which is sad because it was mostly just fun-having and early meta-wrecking mech design discussions I wish I could still reference.

I have a friend who's been playing MW5 and I think it looks cool.
Where would I start with the series? Any good books I should look into? Is Online worth a play or is it the World of Tanks/Warthunder grindfest model?

You can find all the books for free in pdf format online pretty easily if you wish to read. This is a recommended reading order, there are more out there but this one makes enough sense to follow it:
This site has archive pdf versions of a bunch of the books, you can also find them elsewhere: https://annas-archive.org/

Online play with Mechwarrior Online is free, it is very close to MW5 in terms of mechanics, but harder because the AI in 5 is usually dumber than your opponent team. You can also play MW5 with your friend if you purchase the game and finish the first 3 or 4 tutorial missions of the game. Personally I found it easier to learn how things tend to work in MW5 before bothering with MWO

One big gripe I have with MW5 is that only the host save can see anything besides just the mech tab, so in my save that I've been slowly grinding through with the wife-to-be, we downloaded a mod that lets us both see all tabs.

Finished up the Tukayyid DLC today and its kind of mid, its really way too long for what it is with the vast majority of missions being in the same kind of biome without new gimmicks makes the bulk of the DLC repetitive and some of the missions feeling very short. Would've been better to trim it down from 20 to around 12 like the Ghost Bear's DLC so each missions can have more meat to them.

The new mechs are fun though the Bane being able to gigaboat does kind of throw off the balance when you get them.

Me everytime I pilot a Madcat.

Someone at Microprose found the source code for Mechwarrior 2

Between MWO, MegaMek, occasionally BTA, emulating the older games, if this game is good I'll be eating well. I was disappointed with Mech Engineers and they have a habit of never updating their games more than once if at all (which to be fair they're usually more or less complete) so I'm worried that if this game is mediocre it'll stay mediocre.

MicroProse... That's a name I haven't heard in a long time.
It's a company skinwalking the original, got the logo and stuff. They seem to be committed to publishing (not making, they contract with devs) remakes and oldskool pastiches that the original target audience would like. Which is fine. But they also do some skeevy stuff. Most notably also this week was announcing the "GCR" series which seem to be remakes of the Grand Prix games of the 90s. What's wonky about it is there's another game that announced they're nearing completion, Grand Pro Circuit, working the same corner. That Microprose did a slapped together AIfilled paper launch to steal the thunder of a guy's passion project ruffled some feathers.

Never heard of this, can you tell me more?

I'll do something I never do: Here's a video from a knowledgable guy who lays it out:

tl;dr: There's a guy out there making Grand Pro Circuit, who just loves the 90's racing sims, as a homage. It looks pretty slick for what it is, and the bowdlerized advertisers are hilarious. neo-MicroProse came out with an announcement they'd struck a deal with Geoff Crammond who did the Grand Prix series for old-MicroProse, and say how they're going to basically re-release updated versions. There's nuances there this guy goes into, but the release seems to have been made specifically to take the momentum out of GPC, and things like the semi-redacted liveries look AI'd up.

neo-MicroProse in general seems to kind of be like that? It's one of those things where you have a publisher putting money into actually getting stuff for oldskool PC gamers over the line, but there's a lot of trading on the old name and occasional iffy tactics. Having said that: They've mostly delivered so far, and since their whole gig is publishing certain genres of indy games, what matters more is the devs' ability to deliver. This mech game looks mostly-done so I imagine it'll be fine. Of course, what gets me about this game is even MW2 had some textures, especially if you were doing it right.

That Steel Bounty trailer looks like ass. It doesn't even look as good as the original MW2, and it makes me think of a jeet-spawned Mechwarrior knockoff.
MicroProse (nu-MicroProse?) mass publishes cheap games (some are actually good like Highfleet) so it's unsurprising, it was probably made by one person doing it for a hobby.

You really should give MechWarrior Living Legends a try.

MWLL is such a blast to play. It has mech's, BA's, VTOLS, Aerospace fighters and even tanks and APC's but the matches rarely see more then 30 people playing.

I really wish this game would catch fire as I enjoy the shit out of it and it could really use more players to spice things up. While I do dig the tight community it will die if more fresh blood doesn't come along.

I made a remix of a MW4 Catapult model I found online:

Specifically, I added indentations for details I thought would be hard to paint, like the cockpit glass, lasers, and LRM launchers. Happy printing!

p.s. after first print in FDM, I found that the upper leg is weak so be careful when removing supports
