Is there an easy answer as to what the best way to buy Mechwarrior 5 is? There's like 10 DLCs, 2 of them aren't included in any of the bundles and one of the bundles excludes the other main game (Clans).
So I'm home and looking around. I don't think we really have access to the new rules as a PDF yet but I do see i think the updated quick-start rules on their website.
Really want the new book to come out so the new rules are official. I'm not a fan of all of them, but some changes are neat. I do understand the negative opinion because this whole thing was written with just IlClan in mind and not other eras, which is dumb (but that's CGL for you). What really pisses me off, is the "Total Warfare" Replacer isn't actually replacing Total Warfare, just the Mech Portion and Mech Manual. They won't have rules for combined arms and combined arms is fucking great.
Honestly though, focusing just on the mechs is fine. The majority of players focus on the mechs, the game is designed around mechs, and mechs are the easiest thing to use and learn. I just wish they were updating infantry and aerospace rules. Okay, I'll be real. I just want those rules organized better where I'm not flipping between dozens of pages to figure out how one special edge case thing works LOL.

Found this on Facebook, and it's a pretty interesting complaint
The duality of these 2 boxes.
The Game of Armored combat is a Battlemaster, Awesome, Locust, Commando, Catapult, Thunderbolt, Shadow Hawk and Wolverine
All iconic, succession war designs, all serving similar roles but with different load outs so it’s not a mirror match.
The core box is:
Solitaire, Hollander, Eris, Uziel, Regent, Rakshasa, Mad Cat Mk II, and Vulture Mk IV.
A mishmash of periods, clan and inner sphere mechs of wildly different roles and capabilities.
Apparently during a GenCon stream, the designers chose their favorites for the box.
If you want to set the box in the IlClan era, why don’t you… you know, feature the IlClan?
Maybe the best way to introduce new and returning fans to the setting and time period is feature the pivotal battle OF THE TIME PERIOD?
The lack of good commercial logic at play is insane.
Additional: if some room temp IQ moron comes in with the “BATTLETECH NUMBER 2 GAME!”:
Those rankings aren’t real. Get over it.
Oh yeah, the boxes are absolutely whack and I'm not buying them. Nothing in them really feels like a must have for me, and also yeah it's just slapdashed together.
I just want the new book to get the adjustment period over as quickly as possible. I'll probably wait for a reseller to have the mechs for like $10 each and get the ones I want.

Current lorewise the IlClan Mech Arsenal would look like a Republic-in-other-colours-collection. So far there are no real Ilclan Mechs only Mechs tied to the Wolf Empire or tied to the old Republic.
Curiously the Core Rulebook's mission section has an entire outdated entry dedicated to plugging the MUL. Since the book's full public release isn't until a full month after MUL shuts down, I'm guessing this section of the book was written well before the shutdown decision was even made.
If the successor project's site doesn't reuse or redirect from masterunitlist.info [Or worse, simply doesn't come out in time] I wonder if the Core Rulebook's first-ever errata will be released immediately after publishing just for this.

After combing through the book a bit I've found the part I was most interested in: The new Plasma Rifle stats
The light plasma rifle went about in the direction I was expecting it to (Essentially a light PPC that fires plasma instead and doesn't have a minimum range) but there were two details I was not expecting:
1. Unlike the other plasma rifles, the light is the sameweight as its PPC counterpart. I was expecting it to follow the plasma rifle trend of being one ton less to make room for ammo. [Which in this case is the same size as an AC-5's ammo bin.]
2. Rather than do the full damage of its PPC counterpart, it actually does one less damage, while also possessing halved heat damage. I guess I can understand this though, since giving it 5 damage would've made it step on the toes of the Light PPC and Light AC5. Seems like it'll be a good, spammable infantry and vehicle destroyer regardless.
The Heavy Plasma Rifle, meanwhile, ended up not being what I expected at all. Not only does it do a whopping 3 damage less than the Heavy PPC, but it also has the range brackets of an LBX 20. It does, however, follow the trend of weighing one less ton than a Heavy PPC to make room for ammo, which I like. [You'll certainly need that extra space at a measly 8 shots per ton.]
And it also does a whopping 12 variable heat damage per hit, meaning this is essentially a Plasma Cannon that can actually damage battlemechs now [Inner Sphere plasma techs do it better once again, Clan scientists BTFO]
Overall, it looks like the LPR is going to be a very spicy plinker, and the HPR is basically an AC/20-shaped super flamer. I look forward to trying them.
Going to a tournament next weekend, no areospace no field guns.
I think when I threatened to cheese them they didn't take me seriously.
10k list not sure what to bring but I feel like making them regret taking away my beloved scumbag spam.
