Battletoads 2020 - Chug my dumptruck you stinky wimps, BEEP BEEP, GARBAGE BUTT BACKING U-U-U-UP!

Still, it would be interesting to hop into an alternate dimension and find out for sure, I just really miss the days of mid budget Japanese games that still looked impressive or at least solid, there's still a few devs doing that like From software or Platinum, but a lot less than there used to be and some that do still come out are below par, like compare the newest Disaster Report, which looks like total garbage, to the PS2 Disaster Reports which looked decent for the time.

To be honest, I wouldn't be surprised if DR4 had a smaller budget and team than either Disaster Report or Raw Danger. I'm frankly shocked we got it at all in the states.

So basically this is like the "Teen Titans Go" of Battletoads it seems...

I mean I could get pissed off but truth is, I didnt grow up playing Battletoads (but I did play a lot on an emulator disk on my PS2 back in the day) and this type of travesty has happened so many times I almost have gotten NUMB to it.

Almost every single franchise I love has been deflowered for one reason or the other...and one thing is to have a shitty reboot or entry, whatever, one thing is to have it being woke. For me, Woke murders any sort of love I had for the franchise, period.

Its the type of shit that made me go from a guy who went insane upon hearing the words "Star Wars" to someone who forever now groans in exaustion everytime someone reminds me of its existance...Thanks for that that, Rian Johnson and Kathy Kennedy.

Its honest to God getting exausting enjoying almost any brands and franchises nowadays, especially dormant ones being brought back to modern times in a pitful attempt at cashing in an IP that they have no care or respect towards and simply want to use it as a quick way of spreading their woke idealogy under the delusion they will somehow make bank from it (because get woke, go broke still hasnt set in yet).

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that the Gamestop pranks were never funny.

The ones that actually tried to be creative like the one where the guy was talking normally until he began asking if there was any gay and black content and the lady on the phone clearly growing more and more uncomfortable with each question until he refered to "niggers" as a different species.
The shitty ones is where they just kept shouting the joke over and over with the same place. As someone who worked at retail, I appreciate a creative prank call once or twice, but when its the same ween type brats doing the same shit over and over, its honestly extremely annoying.

Yeah, there's no real way to know for sure, but I only learned recently that Japan has no games rental market and that fact really surprised me and totally changed my understanding of the Japanese video game scene, so now I can't help but wonder what would have happened if they did.

If I had to wager a guess though I would say it probably wouldn't have changed that much, as the ballooning cost of game development over the 7th gen killed many a western developer too and that's with the rental market.

Still, it would be interesting to hop into an alternate dimension and find out for sure, I just really miss the days of mid budget Japanese games that still looked impressive or at least solid, there's still a few devs doing that like From software or Platinum, but a lot less than there used to be and some that do still come out are below par, like compare the newest Disaster Report, which looks like total garbage, to the PS2 Disaster Reports which looked decent for the time.

western developers also tried to cater to graphic whores and bankrupted themselves creating HD assets for bullshots. reminds me of that story going around that a design proposal in the west is several pages long with gameplay first getting mentioned on page 6 or 7, and in japan it's 2 pages tops leading with gameplay (dunno if it's legit or a meme at this point).

not sure if an alternative dimension would look much different, I mean the culture evolved in the way it did, which makes me wonder if rentals ever had a chance to begin with. for example (and this is just my filthy outsider impression) the whole creator/consumer relationship is different over there, due to local factors alone. japanese create for the japanese market first, and given the size, density and population, it makes you feel much "closer" to it than in the west. besides the usa no country really has a gaming industry worth mentioning, over here it's either some fag on the other side of the coast or in europe not even someone that speaks the same language, which leads japanese to be much more willing to "reward" creators by buying (with the prestige of owning it), even more so when it's a fellow japanese. when was the last time anyone over here gave a fuck about "made in usa" etc.?
plus there's also the whole weird aspect of consumerism? materialism? (can't really define it) they seem to have where they buy stuff more willingly where even I'd say I rather spend my money else where or not that much. but as I said that's just me looking in from the outside.

time to take the weebpill mate. novels/manga are usually a single author or small team, so you usually don't see shit go off the rails for the simple reason they value their own creation. and even the adaptions try to be faithful enough to not shit on the original creators work, mangling someone's material the way it's happening in the west is an exception because japs are well aware who their fans are (and what they want, else they wouldn't be fans to begin with. fucking common sense). shit like the battletoads remake would never happen and if it does would look much different.

and as much as people shit on all the fanservice, why would you complain if you're actually a fan? sure there might be too much at times but it hardly goes to the level you can't just skip past it or ignore it, but it almost never turns to shit the way it does in [current year] over here (well, endless eight is a thing, but still...)

TLDR: it's great to be a weeb because you can actually feel rewarded for being one.

Crunchyroll is dead dude.

It's HBOMax for anime now.

Warner media is cracking down on rips and stuff so those are not long for this world either.

My only suggestion is to buy physical media. Most of it has gone on sale and is pretty cheap.

The trouble with the 7th gen though for me was graphics had to be at a certain level because I just can't deal with shitty graphics in HD, so the few lower budget Japanese games that did come out at that time are generally too below par for me, like Way of The Samurai 4, which I heard was in the spirit of those old PS2 games, but turned it off within 15 minutes because it looked so terrible.

This is why Disaster Report 4 looks so terrible because it's technically a PS3 game.

I'm not asking every game's graphics to be amazing, but I can't deal with horrible graphics in HD, thankfully things have advanced enough by this point that you can put out a game that looks acceptable without spending too much money.

You bet your ass better weeb than woke, as western culture continues to shit itself Japanese media will increasingly be the only new media worth experiencing.

In fact if there's any silver lining to the woke era is that it will lead to more money for Japanese creators, which is good.

and mangadex.org

Who knew 10 or so years later we'd go back to this? only instead of English dubs being cringy at worst its to get away from woke subtitles and woke english dialogue.

Give me "Jelly doughnuts" onigiri over "patriarchy smashing rice balls" any day

You think they based this remake off that "Waters turning the frogs gay" thing?

It's really interesting, how the fuck did Streets of Rage 4 sidestep the woke stuff?
It didn't entirely, all you have to do is look at the tweets of the lizardcube employees to see them talking about dumb woke stuff. The latest tweets from one of the guys is generic cops bad garbage. Corrupt cops are a big part of the game, I mean level 2 is a SJW wet dream where cops are beating the shit out of prisoners with no consequences. It's kind of hilarious. And yeah there is the mind control aspect to the story, but that is after the cop levels. There is also some other minor things when you look closely at the game that show the artists true colors.

But, the key difference between SoR4 and Battletoads is that despite their wokeness the lizardcube guys have a deep love for old school sega games and want to do right by them. There is a very long post on the Playstation blog from the character artist where he goes over his thought process on designing the updated characters, his main goal was being true to the originals and he pulled ideas from all 3 of the games to design the new looks.

Also most importantly, the gameplay of SoR4 was handled by a different studio, Guardcrush. Their only other game is Streets of Fury which feels more like a tech demo then a proper game (since it was made on no budget at all from my understanding) but the combat is incredible. I don't know much about the people that work at the studio but it seems obvious from their games they value gameplay above all else so I am guessing being woke isn't exactly a priority for them. They just wanted to make fun combat that retained a lot of the mechanics from the original games but modernized them.

Basically, SoR4 was very much a passion project made by fans of the original games/genre who wanted to do it right. Battletoads was not.

The Battletoads devs have claimed they're fans of the original, but I couldn't help but notice that whenever they talk about the art style and its inspiration, they never once mention the original games.
I've seen some defend this game's use of multiple genres by pointing to the original Battletoads having new challenges every level. Now while I haven't ever beaten Battletoads (I legitimately got to level 4 once as a child and once accidentally warped to level 5 as an adult), I've watched playthroughs and seen what the other levels have. It seems to me that the original had three main aspects: combat, platforming, and obstacle courses, and every level used one or two of those aspects to create a variety of levels with similar foundations. The new one just throws random shit together.
Basically, the original game's levels feel like they belong in the same game, while the new game's levels don't.

They released part 1 of some free Battletoads comic miniseries on Comixology today, and it's supposed to tie the old games to the new. Cover art was cool, but unfortunately it doesn't represent the actual comic itself. No shit jokes (yet).

I don't care about the Queen's costume change, but they could have at least given her a woman's body. It's like it's almost something I'd find entertaining but there's too much that "clunks" for lack of better words. "Chug my dumptruck" is actually kind of funny, like she's not in the habit of swearing and she's lost it.

EDIT: I've found better words to describe the cutscenes. Imagine a robot or alien with no sense of humor decided that the human custom of making each other laugh was intriguing and wanted to try it out. So it studied as much comedy as it could find, literally thousands of hours. It then cobbled together what it thought humans would find funny. Basically there are bits and pieces of humor there but the writer is missing something fundamental so it doesn't work. Feel free to rate this autistic as I'm aware I'm sperging out here.
