Beavis and Butthead Do The Universe + New Series - Dumbest/Best Science Fiction Movie Ever

backup, also an alternate version if you want to spring it on pals who might not be aware of it yet where it crops the bottom off that says exactly what it is from the start
Either the 2011 series takes place in its own universe or the boys visit 2011 at one point.
considering how they probably died at least more than once in the tv series I doubt this will be the biggest issue to challenging the solid nature of canon

Beavis and Butthead was always a mostly grounded series. Having them go to space and time travel seems so off brand.

There really didn't need to be a reason for them to be in modern times. Either set the series in the 90s as a continuation or do what the last reboot did and just make the series a reboot set in contemporary times without explaining it.

They're retconning Beavis and Butt-Head 2011 (which I thought was pretty good) out of existence?
It's kind of karmatic in a way though; when production began on B&B '11, Judge made a huge stink about wanting Daria's series retconned out of existence so he could have her on the '11 show and not bother with the lore it established relating to Daria's family (IE he could ignore the existence of Helen, Jake, and Quinn and give Daria a new family if he wanted to).

MTV told him no and reminded Judge that he signed away any claim of creation/ownership of Daria in the late 90s when he left the network as part of a deal where MTV agreed to not market Daria using Judge's name.

Honestly did they really have to take Beavis & Butthead down the scifi multiverse route? They could've just as easily done another road trip style film like Beavis & Butthead Do Europe (there's no shortage of jokes you can do on europe these days), and its clear Paramount+ is hungry for more content so they'll want to milk B&B for more content if this does well, so trying to start off with Reddit & Morty-style multiverse bullshit just leaves little room for what they can do next without it being a step down. Also trying to move them into 2022 just so they can make iphone and internet jokes will just make the film feel dated when compared to its slightly more timeless predecessor.

Addendum.

If it's anything like the Rocko's Modern Life revival, I'm betting Stewart is the one who troons out.
Technically it looks like Beavis becomes the queen troon based on the trailer. More to the point, yeah this is giving off Rocko's Modern Life reboot vibes by having "90s characters get transported into the 2020s so they can make modern technology and starbucks jokes".

Showed the surprise version to irl buddy.
"Is this Beavis and Butthead? No, wait, the animation is too good. Is this Patlabor? No, wait, the animation's too bad"
he was suitably surprised and reacted well to the trailer

only way it could have been a better trailer is if the the laughs led into the theme song like the tv opening

In some good news however, hell has apparently frozen over.

To promote the new movie, Paramount/MTV have not only remastered the episodes, but ALSO are restoring ALL of the music video clips to EACH AND EVERY episode. And that minus stuff that MTV cut from the master tapes when the moral panic against the show hit, EVERY episode will be restored to it's origina broadcast version minus the moral panic cuts.

This is seriously the most wonderful news I could have imagined. Everyone thought the original episodes of Beavis and Butthead were going to be left mostly poorly preserved via fan VHS Tapes. To get the Music Videos too is utterly wild. I guess the music labels ultimately agreed given that today these artists only make chump change from Spotify and all the streaming.

Even if the movie ends up being mediocre Mike Judge and Viacom being able to rerelease the original series is just wild.

I wish they'd just get a show ripping on modern music videos. That was always the funniest part.

Look forward to this though.
Judge explained why they can't do that anymore when it was outed that B&B '11 was going to use primarily MTV shows and viral videos.

When the show aired, MTV had a sweetheart deal with the major labels, saying they had card blanche to use the music from a music video/music videos of ANY video that aired on MTV on their shows without paying a dime licensing-wise. Now this backfired when it came to home video release (and why Daria and Real World both had to be rescored from scratch) but got worse around 2002-2003, when MTV let that sweetheart contract expire since they were no longer playing music videos and were realizing they could just use indie acts on their shows and save huge money in doing so, since they could also secure the home video rights for DVD releases that way too.

When B&B relaunched, they now had to renegotiate with the artists and labels to get usage of their songs. While there were a few bands/singers who were willing to play ball (MGMT and an amateur rapper who sang "It's Cold In the D"), they hit a HUGE brick wall when they tried to get the rights to a Kayne video. While Kanye West was willing to let B&B make fun of him, the song in the video they wanted to use had to be cleared with EVERYONE who was involved in making it and one of the songwriters told Judge to fuck off as they didn't want their song mocked on the series.

The incident (combined with budget issues, as all bands were expected also to sign over home video rights as well so the videos could be included on the DVD which meant paying more money) led to MTV finally saying "fuck it" and put in an edict that outside what music vidoes Judge had already gotten cleared (including MGMT's "Kids" and Skrillex's "First of the Year") by that point, all of the remaining clips had to be drawn from MTV shows (which would not need any clearing since they owned them) or viral videos that MTV staff could get the TV/home video rights to cheap.
