My understanding is that after 9chan banned lolicon, the site got got spammed by vengeful people posting actual, genuine child pornography. Those people spamming CP then used the same tripcodes for posting lolicon drawings after lolicon was unbanned again.

Similarly, I remember years ago when a notorious furry cub porn artist’s DMs got leaked and he was lamenting that CP was illegal, saying he’d collect it if it wasn’t. I’m find the #notalllolifans chanting sounds increasingly hollow.

I think the difference is that the violence there is for humour.
I love Made in Abyss, the art, music and story is incredible, but I cant quite shake the feeling that some of those scenes add nothing to the plot and its just fanservice, weird fanservice at that.
Mitty's transformation scene is horrible and violent, but I can understand why its there, it adds to Nanachi's story arc and it explains why her distrust of other beings. But the scene where Riko is being tortured while naked adds little to nothing to the plot, or the spa scene, or the peeing scene.

I dont think it should be banned, no media that does not explicitly harms another living being or breaks a law should be, but I sure as hell am gonna judge you for being so fanatical about it.

I know that a decent number of people got mad over Big Mouth, which is in a lot of ways more over the line than Made in Abyss. From what I understand about the creator of Made in Abyss, Akihito Tsukushi, is somewhat of a weird sex pedo pervert and people speculate that Made in Abyss' fascination with putting the child protagonists in unsavory situations is window dressing to disguise Tsukushi's pedophilic fetishes.

Haven't really done a deep dive on the subject, and I haven't seen the show, so take what I say with a grain of salt.

There's a pretty big difference between a cartoon with heavy stylization like South Park (and in the case of Big Mouth, very ugly stylization) making sex jokes about young characters just for shock value, and a manga author or anime series representing children in a way that is clearly meant to look appealing to the people who are into them.
I read a bit of Made in Abyss and I ended up dropping it because it was obvious the intent of the author was to make these gratuitous scenes titillating to creeps. Even if they're stylized, the characters still look realistic enough to make it very uncomfortable to read. Add to that the precedent loli/ shota porn sets for anime (which is not something that western cartoons have an equivalent to).

TLDR USA makes sexual cartoons for the humor and shock value, Japanese media has a tendency to make it actually sexual.

I was rereading the op and was really hoping that he had dropped out or barely passed his meme degree, but it looks like he got a 2:1 which is Anglo for B or B+
