COLLEVILLE-SUR-MER, France (TND) — President Joe Biden walked off stage with his wife after appearing to struggle sitting down at an event in France Thursday commemorating the 80th anniversary of D-Day.
An awkward clip circulating social media shows a rigid President Biden hunching backward into a chair while on stage at the event. The president appears to make three attempts to lower himself into the chair before finally coming to rest in the seat.
President Biden later stood at a podium where he delivered an address to the crowd before returning to his seat and again appearing to have similar difficulties. That time, he remained standing.
He stayed on stage to witness a performance of taps and a cannon salute to veterans before Jill Biden took his hand and walked off the stage, leaving French President Emmanuel Macron alone to visit with veterans.
Biden’s strange stooping motion caused several terms to trend on X including “diaper,” “pooping” and “pooped.”
The scene paints a poor picture for President Biden, 81, who is fighting off harsh criticisms of his physical and mental capabilities. A bombshell report from the Wall Street Journal earlier this week characterized the president as frequently needing to reference notes during important meetings and repeatedly forgetting details of his own policy.
White House spokesperson Andrew Bates described the article as containing "false and politically motivated claims,” according to Fox News.
The president in April appeared to confuse the events of January 6 with D-Day, reminding the crowd not to “forget the dark days of June 6” under former President Donald Trump.
"January 6th, excuse me," he corrected.
