Since my previous thread kinda-sorta turned into a soft megathread, and the tech layoffs will continue until morale improves, I think it's better to group them all together.

For those who want a QRD:

Just this week we've had these going on:

But it's not just Big Tech, the vidya industry is also cleaning house bigly:

All in all, rough seas ahead for the techbros.

Does anyone recommend any Industries much less prone to layoffs? I don't work at a tech company, it's actually healthcare but not a hospital (I work in training though), but they are doing small spaced out layoffs it seems like along with reorganization. I also got laid off in early 2024 before this job. Life honestly seems bleak. At any moment I could be let go again. Idk where we are headed, but it seems very bad. Not just in tech, economy wide.
Harsh truth? You're fucked no matter what industry you decide. For example trades are saturated in most regions and not a one-way stop to easy living anymore; if you're not part of a union or (like many of late), fail to quickly secure an apprenticeship, or limit yourself to urban areas you're just as screwed as the entry-level engineer. Oh and that's before considering how many Jeets and halfbreed brownoids are undercutting your bids and ensuring you get shit and all.

In the current world you do what you find interesting and fully appreciate you'll have to fight to secure a decent living at it. There is no easy path so embrace the suck. Also most importantly: do not quit a job unless you have already lined up and signed a contract for another.

Aircraft maintenance is hiring. You will need to get your A&P license, and be able to travel. It is also a volatile industry, as a plane crash, insane weather, politics etc. can really disrupt the money flow.

All that said, if one is willing to go to the money, you will never be out of work.

Hope things work out for you.

For low end employees. Often with these layoffs there will be a voluntary program. If it exists, make sure you get picked in the first round of layoffs. If it doesn't, make sure you do something so you end up in the first round anyway, Offering cash bribe to your first line managet to ensure you are in round 1 if you need to.
The people doing the actual layoffs don't know you, don't care and will not read your performance reviews. You are just a line in an excel sheet. And you want to be one of the lines that are deleted.

First round will have a generous/great package. Second round an ok-ish package, third and later rounds will have the minimum that local law allows.
Make sure you are laid off in the first round
If you're in a meeting and they're offering severance.... Take it. You vnst negotiate for a slightly better deal but it's better to take what's offered than get dumped on your ass with 2 weeks pay and no healthcare at the end of the month.

That said, if your tenure at a place is under a year.... Yeah .. no severance

1-5 years, a bit better

5+ years and especially over a decade, you might be collecting a paycheck with some benefits for months or even years.

That said, if you get severance, immediately stare looking for a new job and DO NOT use that time as a fucking vacation like way too many people do.

I know someone that got shit canned at AT&T after ~29.5 years of work (to not have to pay him his full pension) and he got a decent severance offer but he's at a loss at what to do as he's literally NEVER worked anywhere else.

TS comes in flavors for particular things. Some a far more difficult than others to obtain. And other projects are clearance + need to know authorized lists. I cant speak to anything more detailed.

Secret is not hard to obtain if you arent a criminal or a retard or associate with really really poor life choices of people. Pay your taxes dont get arrested and dont do dumb shit basically. Its currently the same background check as public trust just different fees (or was a few years ago) and every postal worker has a public trust almost. So yeah. And i want to say you provide the reference list instead of everyone you associate with ever.

TS can be an absolute nightmare with feds crawling up everyone's ass you've associated much with for years. And banning travel to places, banning talking to various groups and nationalities. Which, isnt necessarily a bad thing but its not something you just do and hide anything the feds dont like from. The bar is *substantially* different than Snowden days.

(Source trust me bro but actually seriously do.)
Correct. It just takes some time and some places that require a clearance will literally pay you to come to work, sit at your desk and read a book/watch movies and TV all day while you wait.

I started dabbling in car stuff, which lead into electronics... If you can program you can do any of this shit (especially with an AI). Do be careful to pull the plug when it starts smoking though. If I get laid off I would start flipping half beat corollas while I went for an electrician cert. Maybe go into CNC or something, it's basically programming right? I'm the slow/cautious type and have a PADI, I could get into diving but who knows how long I would last at my age. Maybe use the time to get in shape and start climbing towers or something fucked like that if it got real bad.... but I'm too old. Trucking has a certain appeal but shit margins.
This although the easy car flips are swarmed by Mexicans/central Americans these days and they'll work for a total payout of $100....

Manufacturing = CNC and additive manufacturing these days along with understanding processes and making them repeating.

Diving.... No real money in teaching it although if you're near the water in a nice place you could lead dives although I'm sure the legal liabilities there are INSANE.

If you're over 30 getting into line work/towers/heavy duty labor.... BRO I'm sorry to say you're probably gonna get nuked by biology FAST.

So, a white pill of a small size. I follow a lot of the immigration Reddits. One story that is getting boosted is H1-Bs are being laid off a lot, especially in the tech sector. Now lawyers are telling them to switch to a B-2 visa. I feel the lawyers are doing this out of spite but also fatigue. An immigration lawyer I had to consult with for my immigration said he is swamped with H-1B issues constantly. Let's just say there is a type.

Now, a key component of a B-2, you cannot work or study. Your stay is on a 6-month timer. You have to leave, or else you will be banned from ever coming back to the US. This seems to be happening a lot, so if you are in Texas in 6 or so months, expect property prices to dip.

I will also give hope in Texas, especially the property market, and rents are starting to balance out, thankfully. As for jeet fatigue, it's through the roof. One letter I was talking to, just outright said, if you are an H1-B or B-2 Indian, they won't take you. Now, this was a lovely black lady who was from Prosper. Look up Prosper and jeet fatigue. The lawyer I was talking with just vented, which was pretty based.

As for AWS, they did those to themselves. They overshot their costs on AI and saw no return, and with commerce and retail being very conservative with spending. They had to eat it in losses. The Microsoft layoffs are going to be brutal. They have to fork out about 100 billion to OpenAI to keep that shitshow afloat. To put it into scale, Microsoft has about 102 billion in liquid assets. I say 100 because OpenAI has those data centres to build, but also needs about 30 - 50 billion to not fold.
Same here. In my part of DFW the rents and housing prices haven't been spiking due to a lot of H1Bs get shit canned and some even returning to India.

AI bubble is gonna pop and OpenAI will probably end up being the biggest rug pull of the decade.

Everyone pissing away billions on AI while it still doesn't.... You know.... Make money is hilarious.

Especially corps like Amazon who have next to no business in consumer facing AI applications beyond a shopping helper.

Correct. Do NOT leave a current paying job with benefits if you don't have something lined up in writing.

I don't care how much your boss pisses you off or how stupid the work is, making yourself voluntarily unemployed in this job market is RETARDED.

Yeah define easy though? I can do like alternators, starters, radiators, exuast, plugs, windows, electronics, car stereo, I have a code reader... and I'm not above detailing/doing shit paint work but yeah it's a gamble and none of that pays well under some other guy/dealers employ. You have to wheel and deal until your nose grows a size to make money. I would also need a trailer.

The more dangerous stuff like diving work is not realistic but I think about it sometimes. Mike Rowe's dirty job, anti-fantasies. Doing something way, way less cerebral for a while. For diving I would have to get a commercial module, assuming it still works that way. It would be entry level AF, cleaning ships in harbor until I could get a welding cert or w/e. I don't have the kind of hours/certs/deathwish for serious compression diving though.

I also know that line work is awful but always in demand, that's why it's the bottom of the list, its a step above the fuggin' mines, might wreak me but if I can weather a couple years, put food on the table and then pivot into something else again.

Realistically I should be able to stay in programming, I am very much a one man tech team and there has to be some medium business that can pay me like shit to shovel jeet tech debt and reboot servers at 2am. I would be kidding if I said I don't think about what I would do if it all came crashing down though....I could probably try to take on more and more of the wife's business and grow it. Let her do the fun part while I focus on the money part. 🤷‍♂️

Amplifying:
NEVER QUIT A JOB UNTIL YOU HAVE THE OFFER LETTER FOR A NEW ONE SIGNED AND IN HAND WITH A START DATE.

Not "We'd love to hire you", not "You're hired!", not even "Here's your offer letter."
It needs to be DONE. Set in stone.

FUCKING SEETHE JEETS, Glad to see my DFW punch the air. I expect a lot of them to just leave as the system makes it harder for H1B to function.

With how bad Microsoft is doing, I'll be surprised if OpenAI lasts the year. After that, all the investors will decry AI a failure. I expect Musk to use it still, as you can do some OK things with it, but the market will probably pursue medicine afterwards.

The seething from India is going to be exquisite, though.

This goes double for defense/intelligence, a.k.a. the only part of government that expands no matter who is in charge. You don't even have to be a Fed, cost-plus contracts and sole-source suppliers are so ubiquitous that job security is pretty solid.
Right. But how do you find these jobs? I was looking for gov jobs last year and had almost no luck, couldn't find much.

One of the most growing industries that has a low ceiling to start is autism. Autism is huge both due to a growing pool and the lack of people that can tolerate the work. Only issue is that it is not huge pay, especially for a role that can dish out physical damage. However, it is so understaffed that it seems like workers can practically do whatever they want as who else would work.
Lmao. This almost sounds like you're telling me to become autistic

Fed contracts are public, look up what was issued in your area then hit those companies up. Its not all the things you'd expect, they offload fucking EVERYTHING. You can be a welder, janitor, programmer, or fast food worker and find yourself downstream of a fed payout.

I don't know where I saw it but they had a Prince of Persia reboot they had to shit can because, drumroll....

Ubisoft Mumbai headed the project, but turns out the code was so badly done that after Ubisoft Montreal tried to deal with it.

I am sensing a running theme, but I can't put my nose to it.
