Devil's advocate for a moment: it's a position that has no chance of being adopted for serious political consideration, but on a cultural level it's effectively meant to demonstrate you're done compromising when it comes to the debate of immigration.
It's been happening for years now where any attempt to take a moderate anti-immigration position gets to treated the exact same as an extremist one online so there's no functional difference in being sane/reasonable or evil/retarded in the eyes of your opponents. Asmongold already experienced this when he had a reasonable take on Palestine and was still raked over the coals for it when he objectively true.
If someone is trying to argue that the country has a moral duty to take in immigrants, then letting them know you think they should be shot in rebuke, effectively conveys how little interest you have in debating the subject with them. Letting the other person know trying the emotional appeal won't work just saves you time and energy.
I might be giving him too much credit but at this point "what about the children?" has been done to death this past 13 years and the pro-immigrant side could not give less of a shit whether you express condolences or not. The "children" you'd shoot aren't real, they're a rhetorical trap by the opponent to force a concession out of you.

Asmon ought to have ignored the question or respond, "I don't care" if he wanted to avoid any blowback. In Asmond's eyes he might've saw an appeal to emotion then shut it down immediately with his response. I don't think it's a legitimate position he holds, but what difference does it make when you:
1) Have no power to change anything
2) Have no actual political influence
3) Will get attacked regardless of what you say
4) There'll be zero long-term consequences
TLDR: Border control advocates are already regarded as evil by the opposition, independents don't give a shit what some random streamer says, and attempts to compromise and be careful with optics are only a detriment when your actual position is considered unreasonable. e.g.
"Trans kids" = unreasonable by wider society
"Stopping illegals from arriving on mass" = reasonable by wider society
It's why one did damage and has stopped being a talking point and the other remains a fixture in politics despite haranguing.
