Billboard started collecting data on popularity of songs by radio play and sales in mid 1958, later expanding to streaming and allowing songs not released as singles to chart in the 00s. The year end list is, supposedly, the big songs of the year in the us. I know todd in the shadows is a lolcow, but these lists are fascinating to look at, just to see how much of it is just completely lost to time, look at where the best stuff finished, and laugh at the public enabling crap.
If anyone's interested in my autism i can lay out the ten bests of each year purely from what made the year end 100s, with honorable mentions in years that didn't suck and my thoughts on the years. I dont want to do too many worsts of a year to keep this from going into alog territory, and because im not autistic enough to hear every song from a years' list, because when you go digging, you are more likely to find dog turds and rusted nails than gold.

I'm interested.

I have a few of the Billboard top 10 CD's, mostly for the mid-1970s, though I know those albums aren't usually the exact top 10s due to the rights for some songs not being available. Even though I'm fully aware that the annual lists really only represent what was popular in the United States of America for that year, I'm surprised ABBA never made the top 10 for any year, with the closest they got being #12 in 1977 for "Dancing Queen".

So lets start with 1958, a much better year than i expected, especially compared to the horror show that was the early 60s. To give a legend to this, songs underlined are great, one star are excellect, 2 star are some of personal favorites. Everything else is just solid.
8 "Tequila" The Champs *
69 “Willie and the Hand Jive” Johnny Otis Show *
73 “Johnny B Goode” Chuck Berry
38 "Splish Splash" Bobby Darin

36 "Great Balls of Fire" Jerry Lee Lewis
59 “Kisses Sweeter than Wine” Jimmie Rodgers
4 "Witch Doctor" David Seville
29 "Sweet Little Sixteen" Chuck Berry
18 "He's Got the Whole World in His Hands" Laurie London
37 "Lollipop" The Chordettes

Worst i would go with cringy doo wop novelty crap like purple people eater, the likes of which will dominate years between the buddy holly plane crash and the beatles
Thoughts, or move onto 59?

I know the link to 1958 is in the first post but you should probably link to the full list in each post for people too busy to just look it up themselves.

I'd probably add "Beep Beep (The Little Nash Rambler)" by the Playmates and "Summertime Blues" by Eddie Cochran but that's because I enjoy going to classic car events and those are soundtrack mainstays at those things (as are "Tequila", "Great Balls of Fire", and "Johnny B. Goode").

Never heard those. Anyway 1959
The year that killed rock and roll in a plane crash. Already a big step down and that is with at least richie valens on the charts. 10 best:
1 "The Battle of New Orleans" Johnny Horton
50 "What'd I Say" Ray Charles
66 "Peter Gunn Theme" Ray Anthony

2 "Mack the Knife" Bobby Darin
90 "That's Why (I Love You So)" Jackie Wilson
14 "Donna" Ritchie Valens
30 "A Big Hunk o' Love" Elvis Presley
97 "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" Mormon Tabernacle Choir
22 "The Happy Organ" Dave "Baby" Cortez
33 "Lavender Blue" Sammy Turner
One of the few years where the #1 overall is the best song, one of those story songs from the era when most country or folk songs did just that, along with an almost first tier ray charles tune and what would end up being tv show themes
As far as worst goes, hard to pick between joke songs with no joke or punchline present like "kookie kookie lend me your comb" where some guy rambles on about nothing while the girl repeats herself to him, and the fact the fucking chipmunks are on here twice. Twice. And they had two other hit songs in this year.
The sad part is, most of the next few years are worse than this.

I forgot to add that you should probably add the official Billboard top 10 for each year in the post but you can kind of see them in the link preview without actually clicking on it so I guess it's redundant.

Good year for Paul Anka, who had two hits in the top 20. He has a road named after him in southern Ottawa and he's still alive over 60 years later.

It would look better. 1960, a year where it seemed like people still just stuck with 50s music.

The twist does not show up here because it charted higher in 1962, amd songs charting in multiple years is going to be a pattern that will increase in later years, so i drew the line and held it in every year.
Worst... most of this stuff is very forgettable, it has some songs with names like famous or imfamous ones from later years like stairway to heaven, cradle of love, and... cherry pie. These bear no relation to what else shares their names, and are just lame doo wop. Coucidentally, two of those songs i was thinking of were from 1990, my favorite year to cover on this project. Also lots of songs by grown men about... little girls:cryblood:
At least 1961 is better.

2"I Fall to Pieces"Patsy Cline

Every one of these 10 is good, there are no stretch picks on my top ten like in 60 or 62.
Worst... Probably the cheap cash in "Let's Twist again" by Chubby Checker, or just dumb doo wop songs with even dumber, Falloutboy esque names like Who Put The Bomp (In The Bomp, Bomp, Bomp), or Does Your Chewing Gum Lose Its Flavor (On The Bedpost Overnight) would also qualify as cringy

Dance crazes dominate this year, there are at least 10 variations on the twist, as well as the mashed potato, the wah-tusi, and that's just out of what i can recognize. These songs are little more than vine or tiktok raps, the watch me whips or soulja boys of their time. They have aged as well as the cupid shuffle.
Best... I guess

10 "It’s All Right" Impressions

Worst, i could easily go with low hanging fruit like Hello Muddah, Hello Fadduh! (A Letter From Camp)
But how about a lame #1 overall that hardly no one remembers, Sugar Shack.

I am going to take time, questions before getting to 64, because now with British invasion and Motown the project starts to get fun, through the very consistent rest of the 60s.
