I just got a fiber hookup with the most hilariously inept ISP I've ever seen. The process of getting connected has made me uniquely immune to nastygrams about uploads. It's time to give back to the network that's fed me for twenty years. How do I do that best?

Additionally, talk about this incredibly useful tool. I'd be willing to bet an overwhelming majority of kiwis use bittorrent semi-regularly. Let's get better at it.

So you want to upload as fast as possible? Go into settings and put your upload speed at ~90% of what your connection can achieve. Some consumer routers fucks things up(poor QoS) so normal web use can get fucky if uploading at 100%.

Yeah, I turned off rate limiting entirely. I downloaded a few big items, but never approached maxing out my connection, so I got to wondering if there's any settings that will help me connect to more peers. I should also probably try to anonymize my connection, but I'm not sure what's the best way to do that without tanking my speed.

Depending on what client you are using you can maybe up the max amount of connections per torrent. If you expect gigabit+ speeds you might need to find something that is extremely well seeded. You could use the torrent of the latest Ubuntu release to try things out, it should be well seeded by fast connections.

it also depends on your connection, I've had trouble in the past with adsl and torrenting. even with ubuntu torrents, and some of the seeders being people like redhat who also happen to be quite close to me(about a 15min drive away). i really struggled to get it to 4mbs in the best conditions back then.
im on fiber now but downloading huge torrents can fuck with the speeds of others on my street (thanks fiber). i do rate limit it during the day on weekdays but its not ideal.
does help with torrents who have seeders in the middle of nowhere though, i always had trouble connecting to seeders outside my country with adsl.

I'm interested in eventually writing a minimalist BitTorrent client. I believe I could get away with only supporting the UDP parts of the protocol, as an intolerant client transparently compatible with full clients.

Bencoding is so much better than JSON.

Rtorrent seems like a good project to fork if that's something you are interested in. You might need to strip some functionality or add some depending on your use case, but it beats having to start writing a Bittorrent client from scratch.

I appreciate the suggestion, but that's written in C++, whereas I use Ada. I fully intend to write everything from scratch, which is why it's a mere idea right now. Currently, the UDP package I'll use is finished, and I'll probably tackle Bencoding or the uTP state machine over UDP next.

Based. I love seeing old-timey programming languages other than C being used in current year. I'm not throwing shade on C; it's still in relatively heavy use for a reason... it's just rare to see older languages such as Ada being used for a relatively modern purpose and refreshing to see something other than gay-ass programmer sock shit such as Rust or Java.

I've never really thought of Ada as old-timey. Now, I try to use Ada 1995, but Ada 2005 added quite a few good features, and Ada 2012 isn't even the latest standard anymore; a new standard for the 2020s is nearly finished, but I don't intend to use it despite the handful of cool things it has.

I'll throw shade on the C language happily. It's still in relatively heavy use, because most programmers prefer to feel like a wizard rather than to do useful work; if programming were a regulated line of engineering, that's to mean a real line of engineering, most popular programming languages would be illegal; it would be criminal negligence to use these hideously flawed languages, rightfully.

Anyway, this reminds me of a saying of mine: Rust is simply the effeminate man's Ada. I once wrote that in an IRC channel, and some effeminate man saw fit to threaten me over it, which is funny. I could go on and on about Ada, but it's not appropriate in this thread.

I'd offer to post my progress in this thread, but would anyone want that? It would reveal my website, and knowing my website beforehand would make it less interesting if anyone ever tries to make a thread about me. If I do, I'll have more than just a handful of things done, first.

I would be interested, simply out of curiosity. I wouldn't want or expect you to post any identifying info about your site.

Anyone here into private trackers? I've been torrenting since 04/05 and it's how I consume any media today. Wondering if there are any Kiwi's that use private sites as well?

I used to use one a decade ago, but they purged my account for inactivity and now I don't even remember the name. It had the wackiest frontend, looked like a travel blog and you had to put a special password in the 'search bar' to bring up the login screen.

Did anybody ever belong to the music sharing community "Oink"? Those were the glory days of torrenting music. I'm having a hard time lately finding even fairly non obscure releases, what's my best bet these days?

I was never in Oink, but was a long time member of What.cd before they shut down. Great memories! I remember the sheer awe of having everything available to you and if it didn't, the impressive request section where users could request specific releases.

In terms of using private trackers for music today, there's Redacted ((RED) which is WCDs successor) and Orpheus (OPS).

Good op, op.

For a normalfag like me, what's the best program to download shit on. At the moment I use Qbittorrent and find my links from TPB via Unblockit.ltd, but TPB seems to be only really good for more recent and popular stuff.

I use uTorrent. Not sure if it's the best. If I'm operating sans VPN I use a different one called Tribler that has built-in onion-influenced routing for a bit of anonymity. I wouldn't trust it for anything that might interest a government but it's probably okay for avoiding nastygrams to your ISP.

I'll also note I don't use it for porn or recent releases (because I barely watch anything shat out by Hollywood in current year), so the stuff I do download is of probably little interest to copyright trolls.

C has its uses in embedded systems, reverse engineering, and various other hacking applications/projects that require you to write low-level code (e.g. homebrew, exploits, etc.), at least partly due to its relatively close proximity to assembly. You'd rarely write a full-blown app in C outside of a college assignment (or a similar masochistic exercise) but there's certainly reasons to use it, however niche.

I wouldn't even know what porn to download without risking it being full of visual aids.

I watch the odd release now and then. I want to d/l John Wick 4 and Guardians 3. I would watch them in cinemas but I hate the animals that go to cinemas.

Good point about VPN's and their protection. It will only be films and tv shows I download and most of the time old stuff from decades ago.

If I wanted to get into downloading/pirating games, where would I start? The last game I pirated was probably 2001/2002 and I used gamecracks.com to find the crack.

I use uTorrent. Not sure if it's the best.
uTorrent has bundled crypto miners in the past and does fucky things with your search preferences, not to mention the adverts. It used to be considered decent way back when, but now I wouldn't install it on anything I care about. qBittorent is what I've used, never had issues with it before.
