The charts have always been a cesspool of mediocrity. Even in the so-called glorious years it was dominated by pop bands you couldn't even name today. The good music of today will surface in about 10 years, it always does.

Also Justin Beiber hasn't been relevant in 20 years.

There was a time when the charts had Yes or Emerson, Lake, and Palmer, or Uriah Heep. Pink Floyd had the longest charting album ever, doing an entire 120% the time as the second place album. It used to be you could buy a new album every month that will be regarded for the next 1000 years, on par with the classics.

They say this every decade, but each time it’s a smaller collection of songs and I would say we’ve reached the point where that selection is zero. Everything is derivative or predicated on current events as part of its appeal.
 
Everybody talking about the Billboard charts and pop music as though they are an emergent phenomenon rather than an engineered one and the music industry is a meritocracy should read Weird Scenes Inside The Canyon, and listen to Steve Albini sperg about payola and the revenue splitting practices of the 70s and 80s.

Rap in particular is equal parts 1) a scheme for inner city gangs to launder drug money by reporting it as record sales and 2) a literal psyop to encourage criminality among blacks in order to populate privately run prisons to generate a profit from the American taxpayer; grow and maintain the CIA's domestic drug distribution network; undermine traditional conservative Christian white American values; and terrorize American citizens into giving up our rights in exchange for the promise of security, but y'all aren't ready to have that conversation.
