Bluesky+ doesn't even exist yet, so...

You get: a theoretical one million dollars.
We get: to control your site. It's ours now, you do what we say. Remember that entirely imaginary one million dollars? It could go *poof* just like that. So remember who you're working for now.

Wow, great deal.

funny thing is, if/when it does exist, this means that the paying users won't be the progressive ban-happy trolls, so their actual users won't be the one encouraging ideological censorship, and they'll only lean harder into normalification

I would watch this movie with the federal agent jersh moon
I'd watch the hell out of a comedy/action movie about Null & Cobra teaming up to save America from an alien invasion.

Also I fed the prompt to an AI, and this was the best result:

Title: "Kiwi Commando: The Unlikely Alliance"

Synopsis:

In the quirky and unassuming world of rural New Jersey, the internet's most notorious forum owner, Null, is leading a double life as a top-secret government agent for the FBI's cyber division, known as "Kiwi Commando." His days are filled with busting cybercriminals and trolling the trolls until an unprecedented alien invasion sends the entire state into a frenzy. The aliens, an eccentric race with a penchant for chaos and reality TV, have chosen New Jersey as their beachhead for their bizarre takeover of Earth, broadcasting their antics live across the galaxy for interstellar amusement.

The government, desperate to combat the alien's overwhelming technology and disinformation tactics, discovers a pattern in the chaos that can only be deciphered by someone who truly understands the bizarre: the infamous lowcow Josh Saunders aka KingCobraJFS. Saunders, a self-proclaimed internet legend with a penchant for live streaming his mundane life, quickly becomes the Garden State's unlikely hero. Saunder's lack of social filter and unshakable self-confidence makes him the perfect counteragent to the aliens' mind control weapons. Reluctantly, Null must team up with this oddball to save not just New Jersey, but the entire nation from falling under extraterrestrial rule.

Armed with nothing but a bag of snacks, a cracked smartphone, and their unshakeable belief in the power of memes, they embark on a hilariously absurd journey through a world turned upside down.

Somebody should have reminded these fuckers that Tumblr still exists, and they can return from their exodus whenever they want to spew politics
But then they'd never get the porn they want.
Bluesky it is then
There's so much porn. It's a lot of fag shit though. Fat bears posting pics and fishing for compliments like women on instagram. Despite having the moderation tools turned to max filter I still get constant shit like this just in my feed while I scroll.

I've been going over some of the source code for BlueSky. I'm not an expert on every language and framework used, but I know enough to get around. I find the idea of replicating Bsky interesting, in theory this is a complete social network you could just fork and deploy.

The amazing thing is that the code is set up, segmented, and documented like proper projects. They aren't just doing the bare minimum to pretend they're OSS, and there doesn't appear to be any hidden magic sauce they're holding back. If you're comfortable with the environment, you can set up and build the servers, data store, and the front end (bsky.app itself) in a day. It even has the hooks for Android and iOS deployment. All you would have to do is switch the variables around to your own servers, and de-brand it.

In theory, it could be a weekend project to replace all the butterflies with kiwis and release GreenSky, running in parallel with an alternate ecosystem of PDS providers. That's kind of neat, or it would be if you had the secure data center setup to withstand the immediate attacks it would draw. (I tried wargaming it in my head, and concluded you'd have to go text-only to avoid the inevitable CSAM attacks.)

The other problem is the AT protocol, and bsky's API itself. For all it's supposed to be "federating", right now bsky itself is the single high-value node in that network. You could imagine any number of smaller communities springing up and attaching to the main feed, like subreddits or fediverse instances. But their network value would be dependent on the content firehose behind that authoritarian bottleneck. And they will absolutely cut off any unwelcome parallel system.

I made an account to test something, making the mistake of putting kiwifarms as part of the user name. After logging in, before I could do any action other than scanning the main feed and liking random cat pictures, my account got banned. You can bet any GreenSky app trying to federate with them will be blocked the second someone hears about it, with a flimsy excuse about security or something getting blurted out for cover.

Like I said in a previous post, there are some interesting things underlying BlueSky. But the the crowd it attracts, and their willingness to coddle them, is going to choke the project before any cool experimentation can hit critical mass.

How exactly do you view posts of users who have blocked you?

Sock accounts , or https://skyview.social/

@Harvey Danger , you’d need a relay and at proto server(which is the piece you can’t roll your own). The portion of it that handles private messages are closed source.

so if they have hooks in it to report CSAM, or send your messages to Herndon (depending on whether they’re subject to CALEA ACT) , or let their admins read them, well you can’t see it.

You can really see the limitations of AI as a writing tool here. It doesn't even specify what kind of snacks.

Jesse Singal and his Kiwi Waffen-SS are taking over Bluesky!

Kiwi PATRIQTS are in control. :semperfidelis:
did no one on bluesky think about this? (no they didn't lol) why would anyone here go to bat for some journalist to "colonize" a social media site when we are all obviously here on the better one? :smug:

Maybe I'm missing something, but aren't relay and proto server covered by this and this, respectively? The PDS main project is containerized, but it links to code in the main README. I haven't looked through it to see if everything is in there though. (They also released a "firehose fan-out service" as part of upgrading relays, but it doesn't seem useful for small players.)

If there's a cutout for private messages, that should be easy enough to replicate, maybe in the fediverse AP style. I wouldn't trust a bsky PDS with a parallel network's DMs, but you lose control over anything you pass into their network anyway.

“We’re going to make our own bluesky! With soijacks and hookers!” Fuck me, ive heard this one before..

So you can self host all of bluesky “except the app view”

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=42086596

What’s the appview?

>AppViews re-distribute content from repos, which means they need to keep track of account hosting status, and stop re-distributing content from accounts which are deleted, deactivated, taken down, etc.

Do we need it? (Does this just mean we don’t get the central command from bluesky to ban delete etc you or your content? Good. Fuck them.)

Forking guidelines

You have our blessing 🪄✨ to fork this application! However, it's very important to be clear to users when you're giving them a fork.

Please be sure to:

  • Change all branding in the repository and UI to clearly differentiate from Bluesky.
  • Change any support links (feedback, email, terms of service, etc) to your own systems.
  • Replace any analytics or error-collection systems with your own so we don't get super confused.

My Worst Colleague™

Jesse Singal is a science journalist whose output is almost entirely committed to attacks on trans people’s healthcare, particularly trans children.
Singal, like J.K. Rowling and many other anti-trans bigots, has pretty much made opposing rights for trans people his entire public personality. In addition to his articles in high-profile publications, he frequently threatens to sue people for mild criticisms, and encourages his social media followers to harass his critics, particularly those from marginalized groups.
"Imagine picking Singal over Lizzo" [imagine picking Lizzo -ed]
In the few days since they announced Singal is allowed to break their rules, he has sent cease-and-desist orders to various users — including finding people’s real names when they were posting under pseudonyms. Emboldened by all of this, a new group of trolls has descended to threaten violence against trans and other marginalized users. I decided that I personally couldn’t tolerate being on a network that encourages anti-trans harassment,
Amazing how the game of telephone has played out. Still haven't seen evidence of Singal sending users C&Ds.

I'm not going to try, but I'm interested in knowing the possibility. It's rare to get Big Tech projects open enough to learn from in real time. It's also odd for one to be giving away what they claim is their core product, but nobody takes them up on it, while everyone is claiming it's the next big thing. It's a tech version of watching a lolcow's delusions fall apart.

So you can self host all of bluesky “except the app view”
That's probably replaceable, but the real killer is the storage size that post is talking about. Database size and bandwidth is a massive problem for small node hosting, the fediverse has been dealing with it for a while. If the numbers listed for relays are accurate, they're never going to get anyone hosting an alternative to the big money-backed main bsky ones. I'm kind of surprised they didn't do much to get ahead of this problem.

Bluesky, despite only having a couple Million Users there, probably a debatable amount of Bots, is definitely seeming to be getting more Fascified and Nazified, like more Migrations from X to Bsky are happening as I am seeing more Twitters link their Alts there. Either in case of a Suspension or just being Chronically Online and because a point of its creation was to evade NatSocism Rhetoric. It's definitely not popular as Libism dominates, but the change, it is happening currently.

Ah, yes, the fabled Kiwifarms "Kill Kount"

IMG_-26s52o.jpg

If our stated goal was to drive troons to suicide, we are extremely shit at it. The only trans woman I know who was driven to suicide by an online mob was Daphne Dorman, and in her case it was the trans community itself who hounded her to death because she committed the unspeakable atrocity of being friends with Dave Chappell.

Troons may never be women, but when it comes to harassment both on- and offline, they could definetly teach us a thing or two.
