There is no such thing as "our own instance" on Bluesky. The way that network works, is that there's the central Bluesky server (the "appview"), and a network of data servers ("PDS") that user data is on. You are allowed to host your own PDS, and shift the data between them, but at the end of the day everything related to the actual app has to go through the appview. There is also one more form of centralization involved, the PLC. Because the PDS where your data is stored can move, all references to your data (like replies) which can live on others' PDSes, need some immutable identifier, a Decentralized Identifier (DID). They can't be hosted together with your portable data, since if you moved (or your server failed), that'd disappear, which is the main problem ActivityPub had. This was solved via another centralized service, the PLC, which keeps track of your current server and gives you an identifier for it. At least there's an alternative to them, did:web, which lets you use your own server as the DID provider.
In short, there's still one centralized place where they could ban you from Bluesky, that is the main Bluesky server. However, I've yet to hear about this happening this way, because most banned accounts are hosted directly on their PDSes, so they can remove them directly there. I think it still might be worth an attempt for you to make an off-PLC self-hosted-PDS account, just to see if and how they will end up banning you. I think this might be the first attempt to do so, because the only people who run off-PLC accounts I've seen were ATProto autists, and as such trannies or tranny-adjacent. I couldn't find a tutorial on how to do this setup, good luck!

I'm not sure if this has been discussed yet but the AT protocol is probably the most blatant attempt to kill the Fediverse I've ever seen. Instead of an open system where instances are independently managed by a variety of operators, they want a system where you go into their gay little Discord and do their humiliation ritual so that they can federate your instance, pre-approved by the Bluesky Ministry of Truth. It's proverbial embrace extend extinguish shit and the supposedly anti-capitalist liberals who make up most of Bluesky are totally falling for it.
Mastodon does the same shit. You can open your own instance but if you want to actually get anywhere you have to go through their own special little dance-monkey-dance thing. I am so tired of these supposedly "open" platforms that are basically closed in practice anyways. Two decades since the launch of Twitter and the only innovation in social media technology has been taking open systems and twisting and bending them until they're the same shit anyways.

It's not a centralized place in terms of the protocol. They can only ban you from Bluesky's appview, but if you hosted your own appview they couldn't ban you from your own server.

The only server polling the “self hosted” instances is bluesky itself. So if you piss them off they will not poll your server (and then they’re the link between you and any other theoretical servers.) so they can - and will - unperson your server the same way they can do you.
They wanted a mastodon killer, making it easy enough for a brain dead shitlib to sign up for . But also with a central moderation that can get rid of anyone or anything on the entire network. So I’ll say it here. And that’s why this place exists and thrives. While possible, I think corpos will not go to Bluesky en masse for one very key reason: the blocklists. You can bet that every corporate account that goes active there will 100% end up on an anti-spam/anti-corporate blocklist. And given the composition of the site, you can bet a large majority of the users will sub to this blocklist by default.
Why migrate to a site where 90% of your content is likely blocked when Twitter still exists and has a far greater reach?
