Okay maybe I'm a little jaded, but I do think that once a platform for discussion and "social interaction" (and little else) reaches a certain size it just turns into a hellhole.

There are too many people with completely different worldviews on different sides of the planet for it to not generate more conflict than it's worth, and moderation almost always becomes skewed and heavy-handed.

Look I don't want to piss in anyone's cereal too hard here, it is a nice thought and I do wish that normal, civil discussions were given more room out there.

I just don't think that something like that can survive in the environment that been created from the last 20 years of the internet. It's like trying to build a lemonade stand in your suburb AFTER it was wiped out by an atomic bomb.

It's going to take a lot of people calming the fuck down before we can have nice things again, and I think that's going to take a while.

That's not being jaded, that's factual.

Once you hit a certain size, financial incentives start creeping in. That usually means sanitizing content, likely towards a left-wing bent.

You start to need more mods, so weirdos with political ulterior motives/axes to grind start applying for the positions. It also starts attracting troons, which amplifies the previous.

There was a user with a wood plank avatar some years back who explained this sort of thing, if memory serves.

A beautiful dream, but still an unrealistic one: even in its early days, Bluesky suffered from starting off with a populace made up of polyamorous hysterics with lip rings who couldn't outwit a mealworm; I recall a few different conflicts where people were essentially picking new fights with each other from other left-wing spaces even as obscure as tiny Mastodon instances. As in, bringing over retarded beef no one gives a fuck about to an entirely new platform and getting mad when newcomers didn't give a shit. And they do this everywhere they go! It's inescapable, because they are chronically shackled to their computers and they aren't real if they aren't logged on.

There are truly no apolitical places to exist without seeing some sort of power struggle to claim it as either right-leaning or left-leaning (while right wingers tend to join things as trolls, left wingers are extremely aggressive and paranoid about colonizing new sites - ironic, right?). It's a miserable experience regardless of what side you land on because - rate me optimistic - it'd be refreshing to have a place where users can simply talk to one another without flashing a political party card to see which blocklist you get assigned to.
