Minor PL but my side job is refurbishing and selling old tech and there's a concept I call the 20/30 year rule.

For any given toy (defined as anything a kid would have a parent buy for them exclusively for the kid, including game consoles) your best chance of selling it for a high price is around 20 years after it was publicly announced. For any other wide-appeal piece of tech outside that group, it's 30 years.

The reason for this is simple: People want the stuff they had access to as a kid and tend to hunt for it as soon as they've been through the basics of adulthood and gotten stable housing/a steady job/a partner, roughly their late 20s. For non-toy tech the items skew a decade older because they're generally things their parents had before they had a kid that the kid wound up growing up with.

This sort of cheap time-offset nostalgia bait shows up pretty much everwhere. The early 2000s had That 70s show, the 2010s had that suffocating wave of 80s nostalgia, and right now 16-bit and early 32-bit consoles are selling like mad because they're very close to the 30-year mark (the sega genesis especially. people want old sonic this year and they want it baaad). The same principle applies to videogames and their developers; if you just look at steam's 'retro' tag most games with pixel or low-poly art will land roughly 30 years after whatever inspired them, hence our current wave of doom-clone boomer shooters/GBC lookalikes/faux low-poly PSX games.

Beyond what others have said, there's a practical reason: skill issue. Every wannabe solo dev runs into the problem of making art assets. A common cope is to fall back on "easy" styles: low-poly, pixel art, retro.

I don't mean to knock any individual devs that go down this route; it might be a genuine artistic choice, or a smart business decision to put your energy elsewhere. But so many troons want to be indie devs, and so many are chronically lazy, that fawning over uninspired PS1 graphics has become a kind of collective cope.

I've noticed a significant vocal portion of people attracted to old school Internet aesthetics tend to be trannies and faggots. Especially those in music and art scenes, like the artist Devi McCallion, who is a massive tranny who just screams and slurs into the microphone 99.99% of the time. I've seen some of Devi's videos and they have a dizzying, old style, 1999-2000's feel to them (this could be just what I feel, go see for yourselves if you wish to see and hear a tranny with slovenly-groomed hair call shrieking into a mic for 1-3 minutes "music.")

For the latter, I do understand that drawing out certain stuff can help with trauma, but don't share things like that to the public, especially social media if you're an jnternet-addicted oooh so special attention whore.
