You can blame the greedy cable companies for that. Cable was initially sold as an ad-free experience to get away from the ad-filled broadcast television. Then they reintroduced ads. Supposedly streaming sites are doing that too but I refuse to pay for Talmudvision content and ublock keeps me from having to deal with ads in most other venues so I wouldn't know.

I'm at the stage where I assume payment processing is the strongest way to fingerprint and de-anonymize users and there's a huge push to do that. Phone numbers are also being used for that purpose.
