Building a social media platform is not just a matter of coding; I suspect it requires skills that are usually outside of the programming-socks type's expertise, such as social networking, professional fundraising, and being able to avoid imploding from infighting before you get a chance to launch your product. I'm sure it has been tried before.
The other, more important reason, is that a platform without "normie" serfs to lord over holds no value for the average bluesky shitstirrer. The whole oppression-based online ecosystem collapses if there are only consumers and no producers. If the owners are fellow troons, it makes it much more difficult to impose your petty will over the site. That's why they prefer to infest platforms instead of building their own.
