I fucking love board games. Don't get me wrong, I like the vidya but I like board games, I enjoy the social experience of getting together with a group of people and playing a game. I also think board game play tends to be more civil than video games, like I've never experienced namecalling during board game play or being called a "fucking n00b" or stuff like that. Plus at least with the group I play with we play at a moderate pace, sometimes when I play board games online people are always like "hurry up pls" if you take more than a second to move, sometimes I like thinking about a move. Unfortunately I don't get to play too much board games in person 'cause my game group only meets once a month plus we go to the local library's game night which is once a month as well.

Probably my all time favorite board game would have to be Settlers of Catan, and my new favorite game is Dominion. Other games I like to play are Carcassonne, Puerto Rico, 7 Wonders, Stone Age, mostly Euro-games. I've been playing a lot of board games online lately - I actually got an Android emulator on my PC so I can play the Carcassonne app from Android on my PC, plus I've got the PC version of Settlers of Catan and the Steam version of Ticket to Ride, great stuff. I do have a soft spot in my heart for Monopoly, and I've been known to play Scrabble with people from PVCC.

I'd like to get into Go, and I just found out my crazy step-grandfather plays it which is weird because he's uber conservative and stuff that he's into it. I'd also like to get better at chess, I have a chess computer which is like an actual board and it has a computer that'll tell me where to move its pieces but I never use it, when I totally need to. In any case, I'd love to eventually get really good at chess and Go.

So, what board games are you people into?

I kind of wish we kept that Scrabble thread going. Hardly anyone joined in.

One of my favorites is Risk. Most of my best (and worst) board game experiences come from Risk. The rest come from Monopoly.

Oh, and chess. I always lose, but I do love a good game of chess.

Board games are a big thing for my family. It's often the first thing we default to when we're all around and have some time to spend with each other. Like you, our favorite is Settlers of Catan (we play the Cities and Knights expansion almost exclusively). We also play Ticket to Ride and recently bought the Asia board. Breaking away from board games a bit, we play a word tile game called Bananagrams. We do card and dice games as well (stuff like Farkel, Canasta, a game called Play Nine, and so on). My brother and I play Stratego if nobody else is around, since that's only two player (he's young, but he's good, and I'd like to teach him chess as well). I can never get anyone to play Monopoly with me since it's "boring" and "takes too long". It also tends to get a bit... intense between the family. Most games are entirely civil, but Monopoly turns us into a bunch of revenge-seeking, rage filled monsters for some reason.

But yeah, board games... In a way, they are better than vidya. A more civil social experience.

I like the Euro games, too. I have Settlers of Catan, Dominion, Carcassonne and Puerto Rico. My favorite of that bunch is Puerto Rico. My brother bought a game last year called Castle Panic, which is a two player cooperative game where you defend your castle from da twolls (maybe CWC would like it if he had someone to play with?).

I want to try chess and go as well, although they do seem intimidating. I'm not the most strategic minded person.

I love Go, I got into it in Highschool because of that ridiculous manga Hikaru no Go but I'm so glad I did. I have a really nice Goban now and real stones.

If you like Risk, check out Risk Legacy. In addition to removing all the elements of Risk that can make it a chore, it also adds a bunch of gimmicky but fun stuff to the game that makes it play like a campaign, where one game influences the next. It's one of the few boardgames with spoilers so I won't go too far into it but anyone who likes Risk should look into it.

I've actually designed a number of board and card games myself. I'm more of an RPG writer (in the sense that I actually get paid for it) but I've self-published some board games and one of my card games has sold over 100 copies (which is pretty decent for what is basically a vanity project). I bring this up mostly because the board game I play the most is Rocketship Dynasties which I designed myself. The game is kind of like Twilight Imperium scaled down to the complexity of Risk. A lot of the "lore" is parody of the kind of stuff you see in the big elaborate sci-fi boardgames.

My friends and I always had a lot of fun playing "Nightmare" and "Atmosfear" when we were little.

More like BLAGH HOE

That is more like it. When you were in the hole you had to roll your number to get out right? It's been so long for me.... sucked being stuck in that damn hole. (I usually was)

No that's how he says it. But it is also, super annoying.
He like barfs out the words it's really funny.

I'm notoriously shit at board games, with the exception of Scrabble. And Bananagrams.

I haven't been able to play board games at all recently. It's a shame, because I did love a good game of Cluedo.
My mate is trying to get me to play Dungeons and Dragons with him, but I can't think of a decent character bio outside of 'he's a guy who PUNCHES THINGS REALLY FUCKING HARD'.
Also, fun facts, people have died due to Monopoly.

Currently improving my chess skills.

I also like, "Khufu, the muuumeeeeeee"

I really enjoy a nice game of Scrabble. Checkers are loads of fun, too.

For those of you into Scrabble, here's an awesome guide written by some top Scrabble players if you're interested in playing to win - http://www.scrabbleplayershandbook.com/. Best of all, it's a free PDF. I might give it a read through sometime, I mostly play for fun but it'd be nice to win regularly.

For those into Scrabble, we should totally play on Pogo.com, that's where I usually play, though I haven't played in ages. For those of you into Euro games, we could totally play Catan on playcatan.com or we could play various Euro-games on BretSpielWelt, it's not the flashiest client but it's pretty cool, I play 7 Wonders on it and you can play Carcassonne, Puerto Rico, and a few other games as well on it.

Competitive Scrabble.
I wonder if there's like a World Scrabble Championship.
EDIT: jesus christ I just clicked the link and there is a world scrabble championship

There's a guy in my town (I live in a pretty small town) who was apparently on the US team at the Scrabble World Championships and he plays at the local club. I'd join it, but they meet the nights I have to work which sucks.

Catan seems interesting, but its hard to find anyone in my parts to table top with.

I like Chess, Monopoly,Life, things like that.

The real fun is in games like Apples to Apples, or a more superior game : Cards Against Humanity. For a great social game that is enhance by a 30 pack of beer, these games are the bee's knees.
