Board games

I can't believe I made this thread without even mentioning my love for Settlers of Catan.

Is it perfect? No. But with a group and the right expansions its still a really good time.

I used to be big into Axis and Allies as a kid but it got very repetitive.

Right now I'm mostly enjoying the GMT/Fantasy Flight stable of games.

BattleTech is the best wargame, especially since you can play it online.

I've got this Dungeons and Dragons board game lying around. It's pretty neat, though its difficulty is pure luck-based bullshit since half the cards say "Take a shitload of damage", and there's the possibility of getting attacked by a giant dragon on your first turn.

Just got the introductory set, trying it out today.
Now buy this.

We actually had a thread for this, but it hasn't been updated in over a year, so all hail the new Board Games Thread!

My family owns Monopoly, Life, Scrabble, and Trivial Pursuit.

Oh shoot, I ran a quick search but I missed it. Yeah, the OP on that thread did a better job introducing the topic as well.

On an unrelated note, thus far I'm loving the Battletech introductory box set. It's a shame new miniatures are so expensive, though.

I really like Betrayal at the House on the Hill. There's so many ways that the game can turn out that I find myself actually looking forward to the traitor being revealed.
Just played that for the first time the other day with four friends. We ended up with the scenario involving a family of zombies that have to be led to specific rooms by the heroes to remind them of their life. It was pretty stacked against the traitor.
I was the traitor. I won.

Also, these are a lark;

Yes, I am a Lovecraft fan, why do you ask?

I find that the game is harder for the traitor if there is fewer people (3-4) and a bit easier if there is more (5-6).

I'm really hoping the new vidya game ends up being good. I'm interested in BattleTech, but I've never got around to playing the wargame or megamek. Setting seems really neat too, but I'm a sucker for space feudalism in general.

Wish they'd hire better artists or mechanical designers, though. Never liked the mechs themselves- might be that I'm a weeb and am used to the Japanese aesthetic.

So does anybody besides me plays board games regularly? If so, here's a thread for you guys. I'm including all tabletop gaming except for RPGs (have their own thread) and miniatures games (has a different, albeit quite related, culture). So I am including ancient abstracts like Go or Chess, card games like poker or Tarot games, early commercial games like Monopoly or Clue, modern "euros" like Catan or Agricola, etc.

Also, you can whine about the culture surrounding "modern" board gaming, including the FLGS/OLGS, BoardGameGeek, YouTube channels, etc.

I'll kick things off: what new games have you played recently? I've played New Frontiers, the board game spin-off of Race for the Galaxy. I enjoyed my time, but if you didn't like the original game, I do not think you would enjoy it if didn't like the original. And I don't see much reason to gets this in addition to Race.

GMT has some great stuff out there a shame that it's mostly in limited run I've been looking for their u-boats game for awhile and when it does it's a small fortune.

I finally got around to seeing if there was a board game thread, after seeing a couple threads that mentioned the hobby. It's something I spent a decade doing with my family and now also friends so I'm really into it. But seeing people talk like Settlers of Catan like the second coming is kind of disappointing, not going to lie. Please, there's much better out there. (Yes, I necroed a thread for this, but seriously, Catan is overrated.)

Here are my top five games. Most of them tend towards being heavy and asymmetrical, but still:

That's right, I got to play this before the reprint came out. My dad had several of the 1979 versions, and this Christmas he gave one of them to me, so I'm now a proud owner of one of them. :heart-full:

That's an excellent game and I'd gladly 1v1 you on it, but Twilight Imperium is also great as well. I got to actually play that the other day with 5 online buddies and it was a laugh and a half.

Hopefully we'll get to play some others, I'm hoping to do Root on Tuesday. Tabletop Simulator is a godsend with this kind of thing.

Extremely my kind of thing. I have a boardgame obsession and a scarily big collection, but a couple highlights:

Oldest copy: First ed Merchants of Venus
Most expensive: Kingdom Death: Monster (formerly Crokinole)
Last purchase: Cuba Libre
Most plays: Battlecon
Latest obsession: Brass: Birmingham

I wish I could find somebody to play my copy of War of the Ring with.
Also nice score on Dune
