My Bobese-to-English translator sometimes malfunctions, but what I believe he's trying to argue is that manga is like newspaper comics in that a series will start one way, then over years or decades become something radically different. Note that he doesn't actually provide any illustrations of this point, just rattles off some names and expects you to figure it out on your own. I think he previously mentioned how Blondie eventually became "The Dagwood Bumstead Strip (sometimes featuring Blondie)," but that's about it.

It's a completely surface-level read that doesn't hold up under even the barest scrutiny, of course. For starters, comic strips are written as dailies, while manga operates on a weekly or monthly schedule. Second, comic strips are almost always gag-a-day humor, and rarely have any sort of ongoing story at all, while manga is generally the opposite. Third, the amount of effort that goes into each is radically different; a comic strip is something like 20-30 panels a week, whereas a single weekly manga chapter can be more like 20-30 pages.

But the biggest reason his "analysis" is wrong is in his implication of what happens to each over time. The longest running comic strips tend to outlive their creators and get passed on to another artist to continue them, but while the general premise may have shifted at some point (Blondie focusing more on Dagwood, Barney Google being replaced as the focus by Snuffy Smith), successors tend not to radically change things because newspaper comic readers like consistency. That's also before you factor in comic strips where the author chooses to end the series instead of keep it going into perpetuity, like Calvin and Hobbes or Peanuts.

Manga, on the other hand, generally lives and dies with the creator. It's pretty rare for a long-runner to get passed to someone else, and even when it does, the original author's wishes for the story are respected. Berserk is a good example of this; Miura's sudden death would have left the series unfinished, but it is being continued by a long-time friend and others who worked with him to carry it through to his intended conclusion. At any rate, most manga don't even last that long, frequently getting canceled due to poor sales. And while the premise can change over time, it's not due to "increasingly esoteric tangents." Sometimes they have things planned out long in advance and it just looks like a radical shift to readers, other times they realize the story they're writing is different from what they initially conceived. It's the same as any long-form creative endeavor.

At any rate, I've spent a lot longer thinking about this than Bob clearly did, so I'll summarize by calling him a retard again. I feel like I could've saved myself some time that way.
